    High-level asynchronous system design using the ACK framework

    Journal ArticleDesigning asynchronous circuits is becoming easier as a number of design styles are making the transition from research projects to real, usable tools. However, designing asynchronous "systems" is still a difficult problem. We define asynchronous systems to be medium to large digital systems whose descriptions include both datapath and control, that may involve non-trivial interface requirements, and whose control is too large to be synthesized in one large controller. ACK is a framework for designing high performance asynchronous systems of this type. In ACK we advocate an approach that begins with procedural level descriptions of control and datapath and results in a hybrid system that mixes a variety of hardware implementation styles including burst-mode AFSMs, macromodule circuits, and programmable control. We present our views on what makes asynchronous high level system design different from lower level circuit design, motivate our ACK approach, and demonstrate using an example system design

    Transistor-Level Layout of Integrated Circuits

    In this dissertation, we present the toolchain BonnCell and its underlying algorithms. It has been developed in close cooperation with the IBM Corporation and automatically generates the geometry for functional groups of 2 to approximately 50 transistors. Its input consists of a set of transistors, including properties like their sizes and their types, a specification of their connectivity, and parameters to flexibly control the technological framework as well as the algorithms' behavior. Using this data, the tool computes a detailed geometric realization of the circuit as polygonal shapes on 16 layers. To this end, a placement routine configures the transistors and arranges them in the plane, which is the main subject of this thesis. Subsequently, a routing engine determines wires connecting the transistors to ensure the circuit's desired functionality. We propose and analyze a family of algorithms that arranges sets of transistors in the plane such that a multi-criteria target function is optimized. The primary goal is to obtain solutions that are as compact as possible because chip area is a valuable resource in modern techologies. In addition to the core algorithms we formulate variants that handle particularly structured instances in a suitable way. We will show that for 90% of the instances in a representative test bed provided by IBM, BonnCell succeeds to generate fully functional layouts including the placement of the transistors and a routing of their interconnections. Moreover, BonnCell is in wide use within IBM's groups that are concerned with transistor-level layout - a task that has been performed manually before our automation was available. Beyond the processing of isolated test cases, two large-scale examples for applications of the tool in the industry will be presented: On the one hand the initial design phase of a large SRAM unit required only half of the expected 3 month period, on the other hand BonnCell could provide valuable input aiding central decisions in the early concept phase of the new 14 nm technology generation

    technical reportDespite the growing interest in asynchronous circuits, programmable asynchronous controllers based on the idea of microprogramming have not been actively pursued. Since programmable control is widely used in many commercial ASICs to allow late correction of design errors, to easily upgrade product families, to meet the time to market, and even effect run-time modifications to control in adaptive systems, we consider it crucial that self-timed techniques support efficient programmable control. This is especially true given that asynchronous (self-timed) circuits are well suited for realizing reactive and control-intensive designs. We offer a practical solution to programmable asynchronous control in the form of application-specific micro-programmed asynchronous controllers (or microengines). The features of our solution include a modular and easily extensible datapath structure, support for two main styles of handshaking (namely two-phase and four-phase), and many efficiency measures based on exploiting concurrency between operations and employing efficient circuit structures. Our results demonstrate that the proposed microengine can yield high performance?in fact performance close to that offered by automated high-level synthesis tools targeting custom hard-wired burstmode machines

    MOS CURRENT MODE LOGIC (MCML) ANALYSIS FOR QUIET DIGITAL CIRCUITRY AND CREATION OF A STANDARD CELL LIBRARY FOR REDUCING THE DEVELOPMENT TIME OF MIXED-SIGNAL CHIPS

    Many modern digital systems use forms of CMOS logical implementation due to the straight forward design nature of CMOS logic and minimal device area since CMOS uses fewer transistors than other logic families. To achieve high-performance requirements in mixed-signal chip development and quiet, noiseless circuitry, this thesis provides an alternative toCMOSin the form of MOS Current Mode Logic (MCML). MCML dissipates constant current and does not produce noise during value changing in a circuit CMOS circuits do. CMOS logical networks switch during clock ticks and with every device switching, noise is created on the supply and ground to deal with the transitions. Creating a noiseless standard cell library with MCML allows use of circuitry that uses low voltage switching with 1.5V between logic levels in a quiet or mixed-signal environment as opposed to the full rail to rail swinging of CMOS logic. This allows cohesive implementation with analog circuitry on the same chip due to constant current and lower switching ranges not creating rail noise during digital switching. Standard cells allow for the Cadence tools to automatically generate circuits and Cadence serves as the development platform for the MCML standard cells. The theory surrounding MCML is examined along with current and future applications well-suited for MCML are researched and explored with the goal of highlighting valid candidate circuits for MCML. Inverters and NAND gates with varying current drives are developed to meet these specialized goals and are simulated to prove viability for quiet, mixed-signal applications. Analysis and results show that MCML is a superior implementation choice compared toCMOSfor high speed and mixed signal applications due to frequency independent power dissipation and lack of generated noise during operation. Noise results show rail current deviations of 50nA to 300nA during switching over an average operating current of 20µA to 80µA respectively. The multiple order of magnitude difference between noise and signal allow the MCML cells to dissipate constant power and thus perform with no noise added to a system. Additional simulated results of a 31-stage ring oscillator result in a frequency for MCML of 1.57GHz simulated versus the 150.35MHz that MOSIS tested on a fabricated 31-stage CMOS oscillator. The layouts designed for the standard cell library conform to existing On Semiconductor ami06 technology dimensions and allow for design of any logical function to be fabricated. The I/O signals of each cell operate at the same input and output voltage swings which allow seamless integration with each other for implementation in any logical configuration

    Utilizing Magnetic Tunnel Junction Devices in Digital Systems

    The research described in this dissertation is motivated by the desire to effectively utilize magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) in digital systems. We explore two aspects of this: (1) a read circuit useful for global clocking and magnetologic, and (2) hardware virtualization that utilizes the deeply-pipelined nature of magnetologic. In the first aspect, a read circuit is used to sense the state of an MTJ (low or high resistance) and produce a logic output that represents this state. With global clocking, an external magnetic field combined with on-chip MTJs is used as an alternative mechanism for distributing the clock signal across the chip. With magnetologic, logic is evaluated with MTJs that must be sensed by a read circuit and used to drive downstream logic. For these two uses, we develop a resistance-to-voltage (R2V) read circuit to sense MTJ resistance and produce a logic voltage output. We design and fabricate a prototype test chip in the 3 metal 2 poly 0.5 um process for testing the R2V read circuit and experimentally validating its correctness. Using a clocked low/high resistor pair, we show that the read circuit can correctly detect the input resistance and produce the desired square wave output. The read circuit speed is measured to operate correctly up to 48 MHz. The input node is relatively insensitive to node capacitance and can handle up to 10s of pF of capacitance without changing the bandwidth of the circuit. In the second aspect, hardware virtualization is a technique by which deeply-pipelined circuits that have feedback can be utilized. MTJs have the potential to act as state in a magnetologic circuit which may result in a deep pipeline. Streams of computation are then context switched into the hardware logic, allowing them to share hardware resources and more fully utilize the pipeline stages of the logic. While applicable to magnetologic using MTJs, virtualization is also applicable to traditional logic technologies like CMOS. Our investigation targets MTJs, FPGAs, and ASICs. We develop M/D/1 and M/G/1 queueing models of the performance of virtualized hardware with secondary memory using a fixed, hierarchical, round-robin schedule that predict average throughput, latency, and queue occupancy in the system. We develop three C-slow applications and calibrate them to a clock and resource model for FPGA and ASIC technologies. Last, using the M/G/1 model, we predict throughput, latency, and resource usage for MTJ, FPGA, and ASIC technologies. We show three design scenarios illustrating ways in which to use the model
