    Digitally Interfaced Analog Correlation Filter System for Object Tracking Applications

    Advanced correlation filters have been employed in a wide variety of image processing and pattern recognition applications such as automatic target recognition and biometric recognition. Among those, object recognition and tracking have received more attention recently due to their wide range of applications such as autonomous cars, automated surveillance, human-computer interaction, and vehicle navigation.Although digital signal processing has long been used to realize such computational systems, they consume extensive silicon area and power. In fact, computational tasks that require low to moderate signal-to-noise ratios are more efficiently realized in analog than digital. However, analog signal processing has its own caveats. Mainly, noise and offset accumulation which degrades the accuracy, and lack of a scalable and standard input/output interface capable of managing a large number of analog data.Two digitally-interfaced analog correlation filter systems are proposed. While digital interfacing provided a standard and scalable way of communication with pre- and post-processing blocks without undermining the energy efficiency of the system, the multiply-accumulate operations were performed in analog. Moreover, non-volatile floating-gate memories are utilized as storage for coefficients. The proposed systems incorporate techniques to reduce the effects of analog circuit imperfections.The first system implements a 24x57 Gilbert-multiplier-based correlation filter. The I/O interface is implemented with low-power D/A and A/D converters and a correlated double sampling technique is implemented to reduce offset and lowfrequency noise at the output of analog array. The prototype chip occupies an area of 3.23mm2 and demonstrates a 25.2pJ/MAC energy-efficiency at 11.3 kVec/s and 3.2% RMSE.The second system realizes a 24x41 PWM-based correlation filter. Benefiting from a time-domain approach to multiplication, this system eliminates the need for explicit D/A and A/D converters. Careful utilization of clock and available hardware resources in the digital I/O interface, along with application of power management techniques has significantly reduced the circuit complexity and energy consumption of the system. Additionally, programmable transconductance amplifiers are incorporated at the output of the analog array for offset and gain error calibration. The prototype system occupies an area of 0.98mm2 and is expected to achieve an outstanding energy-efficiency of 3.6pJ/MAC at 319kVec/s with 0.28% RMSE

    Astronomical Searches for Nanosecond Optical Pulses

    With "Earth 2000" technology we could generate a directed laser pulse that outshines the broadband visible light of the Sun by four orders of magnitude. This is a conservative lower bound for the technical capability of a communicating civilization; optical interstellar communication is thus technically plausible. This thesis considers interstellar communication with nanosecond optical pulses. Its topics are the theory of such signaling, natural sources, two astronomical searches--their search methodologies, experimental implementations, candidate events, and implications--and a custom integrated circuit designed to detect such signals. The targeted search examined some 6000 Sun-like stars with a sensitivity of ≥100 photons/m^2 in ≤5 ns (350-720nm) using a 1.5m telescope in Harvard, Massachusetts. It used a pair of hybrid avalanche photodetectors to trigger on coincident pulse pairs, initiating measurement of pulse width and intensity at sub-nanosecond resolution. An identical system on a 0.9m telescope in Princeton, New Jersey permitted unambiguous identification of even a solitary pulse. Among the 11,600 artifact-free observations at Harvard, the distribution of 274 observed events shows no pattern of repetition, and is consistent with a model with uniform event rate, independent of target. With one possible exception (HIP 107395), no valid event was seen simultaneously at the two observatories. The all-sky search is a pulsed optical meridian transit survey of the Northern sky (-20° < δ <+70°) with ~1 min dwell time and a sensitivity of ≥95 photons/m^2 in ≤3 ns (300-650 nm). It uses a 1.8m spherical telescope to image 1.°6 x 0.°2 on two matched focal planes with 512 photomultiplier tube pixels each. Coincident optical pulses trigger custom electronics to record pulse profiles and event timing. No pulses were observed during initial observations of 1% of the sky (which includes ~10^5 Sun-like stars within range). Thirty-two PulseNet chips--a full-custom integrated circuit that forms the all-sky instrument's computing core--digitize 1024 photodetector outputs at ≤1 GS/s, filter and store candidate signals, and perform astronomical observations

    Signal processing architectures for automotive high-resolution MIMO radar systems

    To date, the digital signal processing for an automotive radar sensor has been handled in an efficient way by general purpose signal processors and microcontrollers. However, increasing resolution requirements for automated driving on the one hand, as well as rapidly growing numbers of manufactured sensors on the other hand, can provoke a paradigm change in the near future. The design and development of highly specialized hardware accelerators could become a viable option - at least for the most demanding processing steps with data rates of several gigabits per second. In this work, application-specific signal processing architectures for future high-resolution multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar sensors are designed, implemented, investigated and optimized. A focus is set on real-time performance such that even sophisticated algorithms can be computed sufficiently fast. The full processing chain from the received baseband signals to a list of detections is considered, comprising three major steps: Spectrum analysis, target detection and direction of arrival estimation. The developed architectures are further implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and important measurements like resource consumption, power dissipation or data throughput are evaluated and compared with other examples from literature. A substantial dataset, based on more than 3600 different parametrizations and variants, has been established with the help of a model-based design space exploration and is provided as part of this work. Finally, an experimental radar sensor has been built and is used under real-world conditions to verify the effectiveness of the proposed signal processing architectures.Bisher wurde die digitale Signalverarbeitung für automobile Radarsensoren auf eine effiziente Art und Weise von universell verwendbaren Mikroprozessoren bewältigt. Jedoch können steigende Anforderungen an das Auflösungsvermögen für hochautomatisiertes Fahren einerseits, sowie schnell wachsende Stückzahlen produzierter Sensoren andererseits, einen Paradigmenwechsel in naher Zukunft bewirken. Die Entwicklung von hochgradig spezialisierten Hardwarebeschleunigern könnte sich als eine praktikable Alternative etablieren - zumindest für die anspruchsvollsten Rechenschritte mit Datenraten von mehreren Gigabits pro Sekunde. In dieser Arbeit werden anwendungsspezifische Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen für zukünftige, hochauflösende, MIMO Radarsensoren entworfen, realisiert, untersucht und optimiert. Der Fokus liegt dabei stets auf der Echtzeitfähigkeit, sodass selbst anspruchsvolle Algorithmen in einer ausreichend kurzen Zeit berechnet werden können. Die komplette Signalverarbeitungskette, beginnend von den empfangenen Signalen im Basisband bis hin zu einer Liste von Detektion, wird in dieser Arbeit behandelt. Die Kette gliedert sich im Wesentlichen in drei größere Teilschritte: Spektralanalyse, Zieldetektion und Winkelschätzung. Des Weiteren werden die entwickelten Architekturen auf einem FPGA implementiert und wichtige Kennzahlen wie Ressourcenverbrauch, Stromverbrauch oder Datendurchsatz ausgewertet und mit anderen Beispielen aus der Literatur verglichen. Ein umfangreicher Datensatz, welcher mehr als 3600 verschiedene Parametrisierungen und Varianten beinhaltet, wurde mit Hilfe einer modellbasierten Entwurfsraumexploration erstellt und ist in dieser Arbeit enthalten. Schließlich wurde ein experimenteller Radarsensor aufgebaut und dazu benutzt, die entworfenen Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen unter realen Umgebungsbedingungen zu verifizieren

    3D high resolution techniques applied on small and medium size objects: from the analysis of the process towards quality assessment

    The need for metric data acquisition is an issue strictly related to the human capability of describing the world with rigorous and repeatable methods. From the invention of photography to the development of advanced computers, the metric data acquisition has been subjected to rapid mutation, and nowadays there exists a strict connection between metric data acquisition and image processing, Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence. The sensor devices for the 3D model generation are various and characterized by different functioning principles. In this work, optical passive and active sensors are treated, focusing specifically on close-range photogrammetry, Time of Flight (ToF) sensors and Structured-light scanners (SLS). Starting from the functioning principles of the techniques and showing some issues related to them, the work highlights their potentialities, analyzing the fundamental and most critical steps of the process leading to the quality assessment of the data. Central themes are the instruments calibration, the acquisition plan and the interpretation of the final results. The capability of the acquisition techniques to satisfy unconventional requirements in the field of Cultural Heritage is also shown. The thesis starts with an overview about the history and developments of 3D metric data acquisition. Chapter 1 treats the Human Vision System and presents a complete overview of 3D sensing devices. Chapter 2 starts from the enunciation of the basic principle of close-range photogrammetry considering digital cameras functioning principles, calibration issues, and the process leading to the 3D mesh reconstruction. The case of multi-image acquisition is analyzed, deepening the quality assessment of the photogrammetric process through a case study. Chapter 3 is devoted to the range-based acquisition techniques, namely ToF laser scanners and SLSs. Lastly, Chapter 4 focuses on unconventional applications of the mentioned high-resolution acquisition techniques showing some examples of study cases in the field of Cultural Heritage
