Semi-blind adaptive spatial equalisation for MIMO systems with high-order QAM signalling

    No full text
This contribution investigates semi-blind adaptive spatial filtering or equalisation for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems that employ high-throughput quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signalling. A minimum number of training symbols, equal to the number of receivers (we assume that the number of transmitters is no more than that of receivers), are first utilized to provide a rough least squares channel estimate of the system's MIMO channel matrix for the initialization of the spatial equalizers' weight vectors. A constant modulus algorithm aided soft decision-directed blind algorithm, originally derived for blind equalization of single-input single-output and single-input multiple-output systems employing high-order QAM signalling, is then extended to adapt the spatial equalizers for MIMO systems. This semi-blind scheme has a low computational complexity, and our simulation results demonstrate that it converges fast to the minimum mean-square-error spatial equalization solution

However, CO-OFDM’s high peak-to-average power ratio imposes high vulnerability to fiber-induced non-linearities. DSP-based machine learning has been considered as a promising approach for fiber non-linearity compensation without sacrificing computational complexity. In this paper, we review the existing machine learning approaches for CO-OFDM in a common framework and review the progress in this area with a focus on practical aspects and comparison with benchmark DSP solutions.Peer reviewe

Blind Equalization and Channel Estimation in Coherent Optical Communications Using Variational Autoencoders

We investigate the potential of adaptive blind equalizers based on variational inference for carrier recovery in optical communications. These equalizers are based on a low-complexity approximation of maximum likelihood channel estimation. We generalize the concept of variational autoencoder (VAE) equalizers to higher order modulation formats encompassing probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS), ubiquitous in optical communications, oversampling at the receiver, and dual-polarization transmission. Besides black-box equalizers based on convolutional neural networks, we propose a model-based equalizer based on a linear butterfly filter and train the filter coefficients using the variational inference paradigm. As a byproduct, the VAE also provides a reliable channel estimation. We analyze the VAE in terms of performance and flexibility over a classical additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with inter-symbol interference (ISI) and over a dispersive linear optical dual-polarization channel. We show that it can extend the application range of blind adaptive equalizers by outperforming the state-of-the-art constant-modulus algorithm (CMA) for PCS for both fixed but also time-varying channels. The evaluation is accompanied with a hyperparameter analysis.Comment: Published (Open Access) in IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, Sep 202

On issues of equalization with the decorrelation algorithm : fast converging structures and finite-precision

To increase the rate of convergence of the blind, adaptive, decision feedback equalizer based on the decorrelation criterion, structures have been proposed which dramatically increase the complexity of the equalizer. The complexity of an algorithm has a direct bearing on the cost of implementing the algorithm in either hardware or software. In this thesis, more computationally efficient structures, based on the fast transversal filter and lattice algorithms, are proposed for the decorrelation algorithm which maintain the high rate of convergence of the more complex algorithms. Furthermore, the performance of the decorrelation algorithm in a finite-precision environment will be studied and compared to the widely used LMS algorithm

Equalization Techniques of Control and Non-Payload Communication Links for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

In the next years, several new applications involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for public and commercial uses are envisaged. In such developments, since UAVs are expected to operate within the public airspace, a key issue is the design of reliable control and non-payload communication (CNPC) links connecting the ground control station to the UAV. At the physical layer, CNPC design must cope with time- and frequency-selectivity (so-called double selectivity) of the wireless channel, due to lowaltitude operation and flight dynamics of the UAV. In this paper, we consider the transmission of continuous phase modulated (CPM) signals for UAV CNPC links operating over doubly-selective channels. Leveraging on the Laurent representation for a CPM signal, we design a two-stage receiver: the first one is a linear time-varying (LTV) equalizer, synthesized under either the zero-forcing (ZF) or minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion; the second one recovers the transmitted symbols from the pseudo-symbols of the Laurent representation in a simple recursive manner. In addition to LTV-ZF and LTV-MMSE equalizers, their widely-linear versions are also developed, to take into account the possible noncircular features of the CPM signal. Moreover, relying on a basis expansion model (BEM) of the doubly-selective channel, we derive frequency-shift versions of the proposed equalizers, by discussing their complexity issues and proposing simplified implementations. Monte Carlo numerical simulations show that the proposed receiving structures are able to satisfactorily equalize the doubly-selective channel in typical UAV scenarios
