The popularity of renewable energy makes the use of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the grid very attractive. BESS can support the intermittent power output of renewable energy sources. BESS can also provide a support during and after grid failure and even provide black-start capability in case of a blackout. Li-ion batteries are mainly used for these BESS because of their high energy density. In this thesis, the parameters affecting on the fault current of the battery in a BESS are modeled. In most studies around BESS, the inverter has gotten more attention than the battery part. However, the battery part behaves different than a simple DC voltage source. It is evaluated to what extent the behaviour of the battery affects the fault current fed by a BESS. The focus is on the open-circuit voltage (OCV) and internal resistance (Rint) of the battery. The state of charge (SoC), operating temperature, C-rate and state of health (SoH) of the battery affect this voltage and resistance. The behavior of the inverter is also taken into account to get a realistic BESS model. The developed model uses only data available in the manufacturer’s datasheets and information from existing studies. Today, a general fault model already exists for conventional generators, e.g., synchronous generators, but for inverter-based distributed energy resources (IBDER), e.g. BESS, there is not yet a generally accepted model for fault current calculations. There is a great need for simplified fault current models in the industry. These fault models are needed to get the overall dynamic fault response. One possible application is the sizing of overcurrent protection devices. If a BESS feeds in island mode, the available fault current will often be smaller due to the sensitive components that can handle less fault current than robust synchronous or asynchronous machines. These robust generators can provide high short-circuit currents for a short amount of time. The BESS model is incorporated into a simulation software program, here Matlab Simulink, to perform simulation

Maximum current injection method for grid-forming inverters in an islanded microgrid subject to short circuits

In islanded microgrids, when a short circuit or a sudden overload occurs, it provokes an abrupt increment in the currents supplied by the generation nodes, which feed the load collaboratively. This is particularly challenging for inverter-based nodes, due to its reduced power capacity. This work takes advantage of the droop-method basic configuration to propose an additional closed-loop control, which ensures maximum current injection during any kind of short circuit maintaining the underlying droop control. Ensuring that any node injects its maximum rated current during the short circuit, it emulates the most common low-voltage ride-through protocols for grid-feeding sources oriented to support the grid and, in this way, the voltage unbalance is reduced. To develop the control proposal, a model of the faulted system is presented in order to evaluate the stability of the closed-loop system. A general modelling methodology is introduced in order to derive the control for any microgrid configuration. Finally, selected experimental results are reported in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

В. Obrubov A.V. Research methods and models of electromagnetic processes of resonant power converters. – Qualifying scientific work on manuscript rights. Dissertation for obtaining the scientific degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences by specialty 09.05.12. "Semiconductor converters of electricity". – National Technical University of Ukraine "Ihor Sikorskyi Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2023. The dissertation is devoted to the solution of an important scientific and technical problem of the development of the theory of high-frequency power converters with resonant circuits by developing and improving effective calculation methods and mathematical models to increase the efficiency of the analysis of electromagnetic processes in their power circuits and to improve the dynamic parameters of designed power systems using resonant converters as managed objects. In the first chapter, the relevant issues of building mathematical models of resonant power converters are considered and the most suitable methods of research of electromagnetic processes of power circuits of resonant converters are determined. Based on the study of the features of various methods, two concepts of analysis were defined - with a division into parallel in time and with a division into sequential in time components of power circuit processes. The first concept corresponds to the method of superposition, and the second to the method of fitting solutions. Based on the assumption of mutual complementarity of the specified concepts of analysis of power converter processes, it was decided to combine the method of superpositions with the method of fitting solutions. If the sequence of states of the power circuit of the converter is uniquely determined by the valve switching algorithm regardless of the input and output values of the converter and its circuit provides direct (without metering) energy transfer from the input to the output during the entire operating cycle, then the method of superpositions is used to analyze this circuit. If there is no unequivocal correspondence of the states of the circuit to the switching algorithms and the circuit does not provide direct energy transfer from the input to the output in all states of the circuit, then for its analysis it is necessary to involve the method of fitting solutions. As a result of consideration of the indicated methods of process analysis, the task of improving the superposition method was set for its use in the process analysis of resonant converters and its extension to steel and dynamic modes of converter operation, taking into account various power valve commutation algorithms. The second section contains an analysis of the properties of resonant converters as controlled lenses using the example of a two-bridge resonant converter with a transformer. As a result of the analysis, the main features of resonant converters with different power regulation methods were determined, and approximate transfer functions and characteristics of resonant converters in stable operating modes were obtained. Amplitude, frequency, phase, latitude and relay methods of adjusting the output values are considered. With the amplitude and relay methods of regulation, the most linear regulation characteristics are provided. With the width-frequency method, the characteristics are close to linear in the initial part due to the width adjustment from zero voltage. The most non-linear control characteristics occur with frequency and phase control methods. The output voltage change range is limited from below at the level of 20-45% depending on the load resistance. But these methods ensure compliance with the desired switching conditions of power transistors with reduced switching energy losses and generated interference. Therefore, frequency and phase adjustment methods are combined with latitude or relay adjustment methods to expand the output voltage adjustment range from zero to the maximum value. The dynamic characteristics of the resonant converter in the first approximation correspond to a sequential structure with an oscillating link of the second order and an inertial link of the first order. With changes in the operating frequency, pulse width, and the nature of the load, the link parameters change. Therefore, to determine linear and nonlinear mathematical models of resonant converters, it is advisable to use theoretical methods of superpositions, fitting solutions, and experimental-analytical methods improved for the analysis of processes of resonant converters. The third section is devoted to the construction of mathematical models of the resonant converter by the method of superpositions. For this purpose, the peculiarities of the application of the existing method of superpositions for the analysis of the processes of converters and other electrotechnical systems are considered. The limitation of the method of superpositions regarding the linearity and stationarity of the scheme is determined. The main idea of the proposed method is to define simple in terms of expressions and universal component processes that can be combined to form mathematical models of resonant converters for the required modes and gate switching algorithms. First, on the basis of a mathematical model for instantaneous values, expressions of time functions for elementary values are written input pulses and component processes caused by these pulses. Then, transient processes and transfer functions that make up the dynamic model are recorded in the image area. A static model for stationary input values is an extreme form of dynamic models with constant input values. To build a static model in the domain of the originals, a stationary function and expressions of stationary values for one period of oscillations are formed. From the calculated static characteristics, the coefficients of the dynamic model for small variations of values are determined. Thus, the improved method of superpositions made it possible to create a linearized mathematical model of a resonant converter for instantaneous values, which takes into account different gate switching algorithms and allows calculati

A Current-Source Modular Converter for Large-Scale Photovoltaic Systems

The world is shifting toward renewable energy sources (RESs) to generate clean energy and mitigate the stress of global warming caused by CO2 emissions in recent decades. Among several RES types, large-scale photovoltaic (LSPV) plants are a promising source for meeting ambitious clean energy targets and being part of power generation. With the progress of high-power modular inverters, new opportunities have arisen to integrate them into LSPV systems connected to medium-voltage (MV) grids to obtain high efficiency and reliability, better system flexibility, and improved electrical safety compared with string or central inverters. This thesis presents and implements a new current source three-phase modular inverter (TPMI) based on a novel dual-isolated SEPIC/CUK (DISC) converter. The TPMI is designed with a single power processing stage comprised of seriesconnected DISC submodules (SMs) to deliver MV into the utility grid. It outperforms conventional high-power inverters in terms of modularity, scalability, galvanic isolation compliance, and distributed maximum power point tracking (MPPT) capabilities. The DISC converter employed as an SM in the proposed TPMI generates bipolar output (i.e., both positive and negative voltages). In addition to having step-up and step-down capabilities with a continuous input current, this converter shares an input side inductor, thereby reducing the number of components. The DISC structure, modulation method, operation, novel state-space model, and parameter design procedure are analysed in details. Then, simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical and analytical analyses of the DISC converter. The proposed TPMI inverter is subsequently integrated into the LSPV grid connection to prove its suitability for such applications. In the theoretical analysis, the advantages of TPMI structure over conventional topologies are discussed. Then, the modulation technique, and operational concept are presented, followed by a dedicated control strategy is implemented by adding a system and SM-level controllers. The system controller is required for the generation of uniform duty ratios for all SMs in order to regulate the power transfer. The SM level controller is introduced to ensure equal current and voltage distribution between SMs and to compensate for minor discrepancies between the various parameters. The entire TPMI system is demonstrated through MATLAB and Simulink simulations, with the objective being to deliver the rated (1 MW) power from the PV modules under normal operation, uniform shading, and partial shading conditions and to match PV generation with the grid’s power demands. A downscaled 3-kW TPMI inverter was developed in the laboratory to validate its feasibility experimentally with its control strategy in different operating conditions. Finally, the TPMI performance is compared with selected current source inverter topologies, which shows that TPMI obtains good efficiency within the context of existing state-of-the-art current source converters. Then, the TPMI structure is modified by redesigning its DISC SMs, which provides several benefits, including a reduction in the number of switch devices operating at high frequency, thus decreasing switching losses, and an increase in efficiency. In this study, a half-cycle modulation (HCM) scheme is developed for the switches, and the operation of a modified DISC SM is analysed. Simulation and experimental results validate the performance of the modified TPMI topology and demonstrate its suitability for LSPV applications. According to the results of the comparison, the maximum power efficiency of the modified TPMI structure is 95.5%, which represents an improvement over the original TPMI structure

Evaluation and optimisation of traction system for hybrid railway vehicles

Over the past decade, energy and environmental sustainability in urban rail transport have become increasingly important. Hybrid transportation systems present a multifaceted challenge, encompassing aspects such as hydrogen production, refuelling station infrastructure, propulsion system topology, power source sizing, and control. The evaluation and optimisation of these aspects are critical for the adaptation and commercialisation of hybrid railway vehicles. While there has been significant progress in the development of hybrid railway vehicles, further improvements in propulsion system design are necessary. This thesis explores strategies to achieve this ambitious goal by substituting diesel trains with hybrid trains. However, limited research has assessed the operational performance of replacing diesel trains with hybrid trains on the same tracks. This thesis develops various optimisation techniques for evaluating and refining the hybrid traction system to address this gap. In this research's first phase, the author developed a novel Hybrid Train Simulator designed to analyse driving performance and energy flow among multiple power sources, such as internal combustion engines, electrification, fuel cells, and batteries. The simulator incorporates a novel Automatic Smart Switching Control technique, which scales power among multiple power sources based on the route gradient for hybrid trains. This smart switching approach enhances battery and fuel cell life and reduces maintenance costs by employing it as needed, thereby eliminating the forced charging and discharging of excessively high currents. Simulation results demonstrate a 6% reduction in energy consumption for hybrid trains equipped with smart switching compared to those without it. In the second phase of this research, the author presents a novel technique to solve the optimisation problem of hybrid railway vehicle traction systems by utilising evolutionary and numerical optimisation techniques. The optimisation method employs a nonlinear programming solver, interpreting the problem via a non-convex function combined with an efficient "Mayfly algorithm." The developed hybrid optimisation algorithm minimises traction energy while using limited power to prevent unnecessary load on power sources, ensuring their prolonged life. The algorithm takes into account linear and non-linear variables, such as velocity, acceleration, traction forces, distance, time, power, and energy, to address the hybrid railway vehicle optimisation problem, focusing on the energy-time trade-off. The optimised trajectories exhibit an average reduction of 16.85% in total energy consumption, illustrating the algorithm's effectiveness across diverse routes and conditions, with an average increase in journey times of only 0.40% and a 15.18% reduction in traction power. The algorithm achieves a well-balanced energy-time trade-off, prioritising energy efficiency without significantly impacting journey duration, a critical aspect of sustainable transportation systems. In the third phase of this thesis, the author introduced artificial neural network models to solve the optimisation problem for hybrid railway vehicles. Based on time and power-based architecture, two ANN models are presented, capable of predicting optimal hybrid train trajectories. These models tackle the challenge of analysing large datasets of hybrid railway vehicles. Both models demonstrate the potential for efficiently predicting hybrid train target parameters. The results indicate that both ANN models effectively predict a hybrid train's critical parameters and trajectory, with mean errors ranging from 0.19% to 0.21%. However, the cascade-forward neural network topology in the time-based architecture outperforms the feed-forward neural network topology in terms of mean squared error and maximum error in the power-based architecture. Specifically, the cascade-forward neural network topology within the time-based structure exhibits a slightly lower MSE and maximum error than its power-based counterpart. Moreover, the study reveals the average percentage difference between the benchmark and FFNN/CNFN trajectories, highlighting that the time-based architecture exhibits lower differences (0.18% and 0.85%) compared to the power-based architecture (0.46% and 0.92%)

-- ABSTRACT : In this thesis, an effort is made to design an all-electric propulsion system for a fishing boat that works in freshwater (like a river) and does not have to use fuel. The boat under study is a catamaran and measures 23 feet long by 8 feet wide. A speed of 8 kn is considered for the boat when moving to the fishing place and also between rivers, and the duration of the boat operations is 8 hours. Energy consumption for each trip is 17.3 kWh. The model shown is completely general, but the results can be used for any boat whose size is within the range of the model studied. A solar PV panel, a DC motor, lithium-ion batteries, protection equipment, an MPPT controller, and a throttle controller are all suggested as parts of the power system. The battery systems can sustain energy up to 20 kWh. The resulting electrical power from the solar panel is stored in a battery bank for use by electrical equipment inside the boat. A 3D model of an aluminium hardtop is designed to mount the solar panels on the boat's roof. The designed hardtop (created with Solidworks) has been examined under different conditions, including wind and weight, using Ansys Workbench. In all tests, a huge safety factor was reported. The right calculations are done to figure out where to put heavy objects like batteries, motors, and solar panels and make sure the boat stays stable. Next, a 3D model of the boat equipped with the designed hardtop and other equipment is presented. The proposed battery-powered boat system has been simulated by SIMULINK, and the design is then evaluated. When fishermen push the throttle on the developed electric boat, the designed electric propulsion system can immediately produce proper torque, while similar boats with combustion engines often take longer to reach this horsepower. The continuous charging voltage is maintained regardless of the change in the value of the irradiance. Whenever the battery charge percentage reaches less than 55%, the panels are connected to the battery through the switching circuit, and the battery is consequently charged. The results of the proposed design show that it maintains speed and stability compared to other ones from previous research that had issues with power continuity and stability due to variations in weather conditions, such as solar irradiation. The results show that a traditional fuel engine can be replaced with an electric motor without losing power and with only slight changes in the weight of the propulsion system. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Battery bank, Electric propulsion, PV module, Renewable energy, Solar energy, Zero emission boat
