    Shared autonomous vehicle services: A comprehensive review

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd The actions of autonomous vehicle manufacturers and related industrial partners, as well as the interest from policy makers and researchers, point towards the likely initial deployment of autonomous vehicles as shared autonomous mobility services. Numerous studies are lately being published regarding Shared Autonomous Vehicle (SAV) applications and hence, it is imperative to have a comprehensive outlook, consolidating the existing knowledge base. This work comprehensively consolidates studies in the rapidly emerging field of SAV. The primary focus is the comprehensive review of the foreseen impacts, which are categorised into seven groups, namely (i) Traffic & Safety, (ii) Travel behaviour, (iii) Economy, (iv) Transport supply, (v) Land–use, (vi) Environment & (vii) Governance. Pertinently, an SAV typology is presented and the components involved in modelling SAV services are described. Issues relating to the expected demand patterns and a required suitable policy framework are explicitly discussed

    Hyperfunding Regulating Financial Innovations

    Innovations in corporate finance are driven by frustrations with present regulations and fueled by the internet and social media. Hyperfunding is one such example: Tesla paved the way for an electric vehicle revolution by preselling hundreds of thousands of its Model 3 EV direct to consumers. Unwary consumers may not have realized that they were underwriting Tesla’s bold strategy to transform multiple product markets. Risks were not disclosed. Rewards proved illusory. Investors would have been entitled to disclosures and colorable claims of fraud when Tesla missed milestones and deadlines. But consumers can only get their $1000 deposit back, without interest, if Tesla has the financial and reputational capital to refund consumers. What happens when an undercapitalized or fraudulent firm uses the same technique and fails to deliver? Are cryptocurrency promoters and “initial coin offerings” already Hyperfunding, pumping, and dumping vaporware?     RECIPROCITY aims to transform European cities into climate-resilient and connected, multimodal nodes for smart and clean mobility. The project's innovative four-stage replication approach is designed to showcase and disseminate best practices for sustainable urban development and mobility. As part of this project, the present business model report (D3.3) provides an overview of innovative urban mobility business models that could be tailored to cities in the RECIPROCITY replication ecosystem. The work developed was based upon the work carried-out in WP1-2-4, and aimed to collect and derive the business model patterns for urban mobility and propose a business model portfolio that encourage cross-sector collaboration and create an integrated mobility system. This report is therefore addressed to cities and local authorities that have to meet mobility challenges (i.e. high costs and low margin, broad set of partners, competing with private car) by providing new services to activate and accelerate a sustainable modal shift. It also targets other stakeholders interested in business model concepts applied to cities

    This Special Issue ""Multi-Agent Systems"" gathers original research articles reporting results on the steadily growing area of agent-oriented computing and multi-agent systems technologies. After more than 20 years of academic research on multi-agent systems (MASs), in fact, agent-oriented models and technologies have been promoted as the most suitable candidates for the design and development of distributed and intelligent applications in complex and dynamic environments. With respect to both their quality and range, the papers in this Special Issue already represent a meaningful sample of the most recent advancements in the field of agent-oriented models and technologies. In particular, the 17 contributions cover agent-based modeling and simulation, situated multi-agent systems, socio-technical multi-agent systems, and semantic technologies applied to multi-agent systems. In fact, it is surprising to witness how such a limited portion of MAS research already highlights the most relevant usage of agent-based models and technologies, as well as their most appreciated characteristics. We are thus confident that the readers of Applied Sciences will be able to appreciate the growing role that MASs will play in the design and development of the next generation of complex intelligent systems.     An Exploratory Scenario for San Francisco to Become A Walking, Bicycling and Transit City

    The effects of greenhouse gases (GHGs) on global warming and climate change have become increasingly evident, and the transportation sector is a dominant contributor to GHG emissions which responsible for 13% of the world’s total GHG emissions and more than 21% of overall energy-related CO2 emissions. Cities need sustainable transportation system that integrate new technologies and strategies to provide efficient and effective transit service while reducing its GHG emission and improving its livability. This paper explores a suitable and sustainable transportation scenario for San Francisco to achieve its 2035 goal which is to reduce 1,767,500 metric tons GHG emissions annually. There are three major initiatives in this “Walking, Bicycling and Transit City” scenario, which includes practical non-vehicle transit, large capacity low-carbon public transit, and green vehicle alternative to satisfy the city’s need of mobility while minimizing the impact to the environment. The bike and bus rapid transit integrates the bicycle and bus transit systems to provide efficient and effective public transport service to the city. The public electric vehicle sharing program associated with vehicle to grid technology to replace existing internal combustion vehicles, reduce GHG emissions, lower congestion, as well as maintains people’s need for special mobility. And the smart transportation system integrates new technologies to assist travelers to improve travel safety and travel efficiency

    A source-destination based dynamic pricing scheme to optimize resource utilization in heterogeneous wireless networks

    Mobile wireless resources demand is rapidly growing due to the proliferation of bandwidth-hungry mobile devices and applications. This has resulted in congestion in mobile wireless networks (MWN) especially during the peak hours when user traffic can be as high as tenfold the average traffic. Mobile network operators (MNOs) have been trying to solve this problem in various ways. First, MNOs have tried to expand the network capacity but have still been unable to meet the peak hour demand. Focus has then shifted to economic and behavioral mechanisms. The widely used of these economic mechanisms is dynamic pricing which varies the MWN resources' price according to the congestion level in the MWN. This encourages users to shift their non-critical traffic from the busy hour, when the MWN is congested, to off-peak hours when the network is under-utilized. As a result, congestion of the MWN during the peak hours is reduced. At the same time, the MWN utilization during the off-peak hours is also increased. The current dynamic pricing schemes, however, only consider the congestion level in the call-originating cell and neglect the call-destination cell when computing the dynamic price. Due to this feature, we refer the current dynamic pricing schemes as source–based dynamic pricing (SDP) schemes in this work. The main problem with these schemes is that, when the majority of the users in a congested cell are callees, dynamic pricing is ineffective because callers and not callees pay for network services, and resources used by callers and callees are the same for symmetric services. For example, application of dynamic pricing does not deter a callee located in a congested cell from receiving a call, which originates from a caller located in an uncongested cell. Also, when the distribution of prospective callees is higher than that of callers in an underutilized cell, SDP schemes are ineffective as callees do not pay for a call and therefore low discounts do not entice them to increase utilization. In this distribution, dynamic pricing entices prospective callers to make calls but since their distribution is low, the MWN resource utilization does not increase by any significant margin. To address these problems, we have developed a source-destination based dynamic pricing (SDBDP) scheme, which considers congestion levels in both the call-originating and calldestination cells to compute the dynamic price to be paid by a caller. This SDBDP scheme is integrated with a load-based joint call admission control (JCAC) algorithm for admitting incoming service requests in to the least utilized radio access technology (RAT). The load-based JCAC algorithm achieves uniform traffic distribution in the heterogeneous wireless network (HWN). To test the SDBDP scheme, we have developed an analytical model based on M/M/m/m queuing model. New or handoff service requests, arriving when all the RATs in the HWN are fully utilized, lead to call blocking for new calls and call dropping for handoff calls. The call blocking probability, call dropping probability and percentage MWN utilization are used as the performance metrics in evaluating the SDBDP scheme. An exponential demand model is used to approximate the users' response to the presented dynamic price. The exponential demand model captures both the price elasticity of demand and the demand shift constant for different users. The matrix laboratory (MATLAB) tool has been used to carry out the numerical simulations. An evaluation scenario consisting of four groups of co-located cells each with three RATs is used. Both SDP and the developed SDBDP schemes have been subjected under the evaluation scenario. Simulation results show that the developed SDBDP scheme reduces both the new call blocking and handoff call dropping probabilities during the peak hours, for all callercallee distributions. On the other hand, the current SDP scheme only reduces new call blocking and handoff call dropping probabilities only under some caller –callee distributions (When the callers were the majority in the HWN). Also, the SDBDP scheme increases the percentage MWN utilization during the off-peak for all the caller-callee distributions in the HWN. On the other hand, the SDP scheme is found to increase the percentage MWN utilization only when the distribution of callers is higher than that of callees in the HWN. From analyzing the simulations results, we conclude that the SDBDP scheme achieves better congestion control and MWN resource utilization than the existing SDP schemes, under arbitrary caller-callee distribution

    Efficient operation of recharging infrastructure for the accommodation of electric vehicles: a demand driven approach

    Large deployment and adoption of electric vehicles in the forthcoming years can have significant environmental impact, like mitigation of climate change and reduction of traffic-induced air pollutants. At the same time, it can strain power network operations, demanding effective load management strategies to deal with induced charging demand. One of the biggest challenges is the complexity that electric vehicle (EV) recharging adds to the power system and the inability of the existing grid to cope with the extra burden. Charging coordination should provide individual EV drivers with their requested energy amount and at the same time, it should optimise the allocation of charging events in order to avoid disruptions at the electricity distribution level. This problem could be solved with the introduction of an intermediate agent, known as the aggregator or the charging service provider (CSP). Considering out-of-home charging infrastructure, an additional role for the CSP would be to maximise revenue for parking operators. This thesis contributes to the wider literature of electro-mobility and its effects on power networks with the introduction of a choice-based revenue management method. This approach explicitly treats charging demand since it allows the integration of a decentralised control method with a discrete choice model that captures the preferences of EV drivers. The sensitivities to the joint charging/parking attributes that characterise the demand side have been estimated with EV-PLACE, an online administered stated preference survey. The choice-modelling framework assesses simultaneously out-of-home charging behaviour with scheduling and parking decisions. Also, survey participants are presented with objective probabilities for fluctuations in future prices so that their response to dynamic pricing is investigated. Empirical estimates provide insights into the value that individuals place to the various attributes of the services that are offered by the CSP. The optimisation of operations for recharging infrastructure is evaluated with SOCSim, a micro-simulation framework that is based on activity patterns of London residents. Sensitivity analyses are performed to examine the structural properties of the model and its benefits compared to an uncontrolled scenario are highlighted. The application proposed in this research is practice-ready and recommendations are given to CSPs for its full-scale implementation.Open Acces

    OSCAR: A Collaborative Bandwidth Aggregation System

    The exponential increase in mobile data demand, coupled with growing user expectation to be connected in all places at all times, have introduced novel challenges for researchers to address. Fortunately, the wide spread deployment of various network technologies and the increased adoption of multi-interface enabled devices have enabled researchers to develop solutions for those challenges. Such solutions aim to exploit available interfaces on such devices in both solitary and collaborative forms. These solutions, however, have faced a steep deployment barrier. In this paper, we present OSCAR, a multi-objective, incentive-based, collaborative, and deployable bandwidth aggregation system. We present the OSCAR architecture that does not introduce any intermediate hardware nor require changes to current applications or legacy servers. The OSCAR architecture is designed to automatically estimate the system's context, dynamically schedule various connections and/or packets to different interfaces, be backwards compatible with the current Internet architecture, and provide the user with incentives for collaboration. We also formulate the OSCAR scheduler as a multi-objective, multi-modal scheduler that maximizes system throughput while minimizing energy consumption or financial cost. We evaluate OSCAR via implementation on Linux, as well as via simulation, and compare our results to the current optimal achievable throughput, cost, and energy consumption. Our evaluation shows that, in the throughput maximization mode, we provide up to 150% enhancement in throughput compared to current operating systems, without any changes to legacy servers. Moreover, this performance gain further increases with the availability of connection resume-supporting, or OSCAR-enabled servers, reaching the maximum achievable upper-bound throughput
