DyPS: Dynamic Processor Switching for Energy-Aware Video Decoding on Multi-core SoCs
In addition to General Purpose Processors (GPP), Multicore SoCs equipping
modern mobile devices contain specialized Digital Signal Processor designed
with the aim to provide better performance and low energy consumption
properties. However, the experimental measurements we have achieved revealed
that system overhead, in case of DSP video decoding, causes drastic
performances drop and energy efficiency as compared to the GPP decoding. This
paper describes DyPS, a new approach for energy-aware processor switching (GPP
or DSP) according to the video quality . We show the pertinence of our solution
in the context of adaptive video decoding and describe an implementation on an
embedded Linux operating system with the help of the GStreamer framework. A
simple case study showed that DyPS achieves 30% energy saving while sustaining
the decoding performanc

Multimedia delivery in the future internet
The term “Networked Media” implies that all kinds of media including text, image, 3D graphics, audio
and video are produced, distributed, shared, managed and consumed on-line through various networks,
like the Internet, Fiber, WiFi, WiMAX, GPRS, 3G and so on, in a convergent manner [1]. This white
paper is the contribution of the Media Delivery Platform (MDP) cluster and aims to cover the Networked
challenges of the Networked Media in the transition to the Future of the Internet.
Internet has evolved and changed the way we work and live. End users of the Internet have been confronted
with a bewildering range of media, services and applications and of technological innovations concerning
media formats, wireless networks, terminal types and capabilities. And there is little evidence that the pace
of this innovation is slowing. Today, over one billion of users access the Internet on regular basis, more
than 100 million users have downloaded at least one (multi)media file and over 47 millions of them do so
regularly, searching in more than 160 Exabytes1 of content. In the near future these numbers are expected
to exponentially rise. It is expected that the Internet content will be increased by at least a factor of 6, rising
to more than 990 Exabytes before 2012, fuelled mainly by the users themselves. Moreover, it is envisaged
that in a near- to mid-term future, the Internet will provide the means to share and distribute (new)
multimedia content and services with superior quality and striking flexibility, in a trusted and personalized
way, improving citizens’ quality of life, working conditions, edutainment and safety.
In this evolving environment, new transport protocols, new multimedia encoding schemes, cross-layer inthe
network adaptation, machine-to-machine communication (including RFIDs), rich 3D content as well as
community networks and the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays are expected to generate new models of
interaction and cooperation, and be able to support enhanced perceived quality-of-experience (PQoE) and
innovative applications “on the move”, like virtual collaboration environments, personalised services/
media, virtual sport groups, on-line gaming, edutainment. In this context, the interaction with content
combined with interactive/multimedia search capabilities across distributed repositories, opportunistic P2P
networks and the dynamic adaptation to the characteristics of diverse mobile terminals are expected to
contribute towards such a vision.
Based on work that has taken place in a number of EC co-funded projects, in Framework Program 6 (FP6)
and Framework Program 7 (FP7), a group of experts and technology visionaries have voluntarily
contributed in this white paper aiming to describe the status, the state-of-the art, the challenges and the way
ahead in the area of Content Aware media delivery platforms
Seamless multimedia delivery within a heterogeneous wireless networks environment: are we there yet?
The increasing popularity of live video streaming from mobile devices such as Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, Snapchat, etc. pressurises the network operators to increase the capacity of their networks. However, a simple increase in system capacity will not be enough without considering the provisioning of Quality of Experience (QoE) as the basis for network control, customer loyalty and retention rate and thus increase in network operators revenue. As QoE is gaining strong momentum especially with increasing users’ quality expectations, the focus is now on proposing innovative solutions to enable QoE when delivering video content over heterogeneous wireless networks. In this context, this paper presents an overview of multimedia delivery solutions, identifies the problems and provides a comprehensive classification of related state-of-the-art approaches following three key directions: adaptation, energy efficiency and multipath content delivery. Discussions, challenges and open issues on the seamless multimedia provisioning faced by the current and next generation of wireless networks are also provided

Dynamic optimization of the quality of experience during mobile video watching
Mobile video consumption through streaming is becoming increasingly popular. The video parameters for an optimal quality are often automatically determined based on device and network conditions. Current mobile video services typically decide on these parameters before starting the video streaming and stick to these parameters during video playback. However in a mobile environment, conditions may change significantly during video playback. Therefore, this paper proposes a dynamic optimization of the quality taking into account real-time data regarding network, device, and user movement during video playback. The optimization method is able to change the video quality level during playback if changing conditions require this. Through a user test, the dynamic optimization is compared with a traditional, static, quality optimization method. The results showed that our optimization can improve the perceived playback and video quality, especially under varying network conditions
Enhancing Video Streaming Quality of DASH over Cloud/Edge Integrated Networks
With the advancement of mobile technologies and the popularity of mobile devices, mobile video streaming applications/services have increased considerably in recent years. Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) or MPEG-DASH is one of the most widely used video streaming techniques over the Internet. It adapts video sending bit rate according to available network resources, however, in case of low bandwidth, DASH performs poorly, which will cause video quality degradation and video stalling.
Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) or Multi-access Edge Computing, in connection with the backend cloud has been used to reduce latency and overcome some of the video quality degradation problems for mobile video streaming services. However, an end user might be suffering from video quality drop downs when s/he moves out from the coverage of one node to another or when the mobile network condition goes down. To tackle the degradation problems and assure enhanced video streaming quality, a novel follow-me Edge Node Prefetching (ENP) scheme was proposed and developed in the project, by prefetching video segments in advance in the upcoming node used by the end-user. A test bed was set up consisting of a backend cloud (OpenStack), two edge nodes (LXD Containers) and one mobile device, the ENP algorithm was implemented on the cloud server and client sides. Experiments were carried out for the DASH streaming service based on Dash.js from the DASH Industry Forum. Preliminary results show that the ENP scheme can maintain higher video quality and less service migration time when moving from one mobile node to another, when compared to existing approaches, i.e. live migration in Follow-me-Edge and the C-up schemes. Application-aware Cognitive Multi-hop Wireless Networking Testbed and Experiments
In this thesis, we present a new architecture for application-aware cognitive multihop wireless networks (AC-MWN) with testbed implementations and experiments. Cognitive radio is a technique to adaptively use the spectrum so that the resource can be used more efficiently in a low cost way. Multihop wireless networks can be deployed quickly and flexibly without a fixed infrastructure. In presented new architecture, we study backbone routing schemes with network cognition, routing scheme with network coding and spectrum adaptation. A testbed is implemented to test the schemes for AC-MWN. In addition to basic measurements, we implement a video streaming application based on the AC-MWN architecture using cognitive radios. The Testbed consists of three cognitive radios and three Linux laptops equipped with GNU Radio and GStreamer, open source software development toolkit and multimedia framework respectively. Resulting experiments include a range from basic half duplex data to full duplex voice communications and audio/video streaming with spectrum sensing. This testbed is a foundation for a scalable multipurpose testbed that can be used to test such networks as AC-MWN, adhoc, MANET, VANET, and wireless sensor networks. Experiment results demonstrate that the AC-MWN is applicable and valuable for future low-cost and flexible communication networks.
