Experimental Evaluation of Large Scale WiFi Multicast Rate Control
WiFi multicast to very large groups has gained attention as a solution for
multimedia delivery in crowded areas. Yet, most recently proposed schemes do
not provide performance guarantees and none have been tested at scale. To
address the issue of providing high multicast throughput with performance
guarantees, we present the design and experimental evaluation of the Multicast
Dynamic Rate Adaptation (MuDRA) algorithm. MuDRA balances fast adaptation to
channel conditions and stability, which is essential for multimedia
applications. MuDRA relies on feedback from some nodes collected via a
light-weight protocol and dynamically adjusts the rate adaptation response
time. Our experimental evaluation of MuDRA on the ORBIT testbed with over 150
nodes shows that MuDRA outperforms other schemes and supports high throughput
multicast flows to hundreds of receivers while meeting quality requirements.
MuDRA can support multiple high quality video streams, where 90% of the nodes
report excellent or very good video quality
Throughput optimization strategies for large-scale wireless LANs
Thanks to the active development of IEEE 802.11, the performance of wireless local area networks (WLANs) is improving by every new edition of the standard facilitating large enterprises to rely on Wi-Fi for more demanding applications. The limited number of channels in the unlicensed industrial scientific medical frequency band however is one of the key bottlenecks of Wi-Fi when scalability and robustness are points of concern. In this paper we propose two strategies for the optimization of throughput in wireless LANs: a heuristic derived from a theoretical model and a surrogate model based decision engine
Random Access Game and Medium Access Control Design
Motivated partially by a control-theoretic viewpoint, we propose a game-theoretic model, called random access game, for contention control. We characterize Nash equilibria of random access games, study their dynamics, and propose distributed algorithms (strategy evolutions) to achieve Nash equilibria. This provides a general analytical framework that is capable of modeling a large class of system-wide quality-of-service (QoS) models via the specification of per-node utility functions, in which system-wide fairness or service differentiation can be achieved in a distributed manner as long as each node executes a contention resolution algorithm that is designed to achieve the Nash equilibrium. We thus propose a novel medium access method derived from carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) according to distributed strategy update mechanism achieving the Nash equilibrium of random access game. We present a concrete medium access method that adapts to a continuous contention measure called conditional collision probability, stabilizes the network into a steady state that achieves optimal throughput with targeted fairness (or service differentiation), and can decouple contention control from handling failed transmissions. In addition to guiding medium access control design, the random access game model also provides an analytical framework to understand equilibrium and dynamic properties of different medium access protocols
Scheduling for next generation WLANs: filling the gap between offered and observed data rates
In wireless networks, opportunistic scheduling is used to increase system throughput by exploiting multi-user diversity. Although recent advances have increased physical layer data rates supported in wireless local area networks (WLANs), actual throughput realized are significantly lower due to overhead. Accordingly, the frame aggregation concept is used in next generation WLANs to improve efficiency. However, with frame aggregation, traditional opportunistic schemes are no longer optimal. In this paper, we propose schedulers that take queue and channel conditions into account jointly, to maximize throughput observed at the users for next generation WLANs. We also extend this work to design two schedulers that perform block scheduling for maximizing network throughput over multiple transmission sequences. For these schedulers, which make decisions over long time durations, we model the system using queueing theory and determine users' temporal access proportions according to this model. Through detailed simulations, we show that all our proposed algorithms offer significant throughput improvement, better fairness, and much lower delay compared with traditional opportunistic schedulers, facilitating the practical use of the evolving standard for next generation wireless networks
Enhancing IEEE 802.11MAC in congested environments
IEEE 802.11 is currently the most deployed wireless local area networking standard. It uses carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) to resolve contention between nodes. Contention windows (CW) change dynamically to adapt to the contention level: Upon each collision, a node doubles its CW to reduce further collision risks. Upon a successful transmission, the CW is reset, assuming that the contention level has dropped. However, the contention level is more likely to change slowly, and resetting the CW causes new collisions and retransmissions before the CW reaches the optimal value again. This wastes bandwidth and increases delays. In this paper we analyze simple slow CW decrease functions and compare their performances to the legacy standard. We use simulations and mathematical modeling to show their considerable improvements at all contention levels and transient phases, especially in highly congested environments
Throughput Analysis of CSMA Wireless Networks with Finite Offered-load
This paper proposes an approximate method, equivalent access intensity (EAI),
for the throughput analysis of CSMA wireless networks in which links have
finite offered-load and their MAC-layer transmit buffers may be empty from time
to time. Different from prior works that mainly considered the saturated
network, we take into account in our analysis the impacts of empty transmit
buffers on the interactions and dependencies among links in the network that is
more common in practice. It is known that the empty transmit buffer incurs
extra waiting time for a link to compete for the channel airtime usage, since
when it has no packet waiting for transmission, the link will not perform
channel competition. The basic idea behind EAI is that this extra waiting time
can be mapped to an equivalent "longer" backoff countdown time for the
unsaturated link, yielding a lower link access intensity that is defined as the
mean packet transmission time divided by the mean backoff countdown time. That
is, we can compute the "equivalent access intensity" of an unsaturated link to
incorporate the effects of the empty transmit buffer on its behavior of channel
competition. Then, prior saturated ideal CSMA network (ICN) model can be
adopted for link throughput computation. Specifically, we propose an iterative
algorithm, "Compute-and-Compare", to identify which links are unsaturated under
current offered-load and protocol settings, compute their "equivalent access
intensities" and calculate link throughputs. Simulation shows that our
algorithm has high accuracy under various offered-load and protocol settings.
We believe the ability to identify unsaturated links and compute links
throughputs as established in this paper will serve an important first step
toward the design and optimization of general CSMA wireless networks with
