In Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), the features studied regarding Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET) include self-organizing, routing, reliability, quality of service, and security. Simulation studies on ITS-dedicated routing protocols usually focus on their performance in specific scenarios. However, the evolution of transportation systems towards autonomous vehicles requires robust protocols with proven or at least guaranteed properties. Though formal approaches provide powerful tools for system design, they cannot be used for every types of ITS components. Our goal is to develop new tools combining formal tools such as Event-B with DEVS-based (Discrete Event System Specification) virtual laboratories in order to design the models of ITS components which simulation would allow proving and verifying their properties in large-scale scenarios. This paper presents the models of the different components of a VANET realized with the Virtual Laboratory Environment (VLE). We point out the component models fitting to formal modeling, and proceed to the validation of all designed models through a simulation scenario based on real-world road traffic data

    Modeling and simulating the controller behavior of an automated people mover using IEC 61850 communication requirements

    Automated People Movers (APM) are systems for passenger transport with fully automated operation and high frequency service. Trains controllers are traditionally centralized and based on wired circuits, although they generally have serious difficulties in the installation and maintenance. As there is increased demand on the system, there are advantages in choosing an open architecture, with a simple communication system and distributed. These concepts are largely addressed in the development of IEC 61850. In this study we proposed the adaptation of the standard IEC 61850, design to be used in electric power systems to be applied in an APM system named Aeromovel installed in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Aeromovel is a nonconventional Automatic People Mover whose operation principle is based on pneumatics. A model, based on timed automata formalism, is proposed for IEC 61850 communications requirements and respective simulation results are presented.Guilherme Kunz is supported by the PTI C&T program (Fundacao Parque Tecnologico Itaipu - FPTI-BR).     A systematic approach to model-based engineering of cyber-physical systems of systems

    PhD ThesisThis thesis describes and evaluates methods for the model-based engineering of Systems of Systems (SoSs) where constituents comprise both computational and physical elements typical of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). Such Cyber-Physical Systems of Systems (CPSoSs) use sensors and actuators to link the digital and physical worlds, and are composed of operationally and managerially independent constituent systems that interact to deliver an emerging service on which reliance is placed. The engineering of CPSoSs requires a combination of techniques associated with both CPS engineering and SoS engineering. Model-based SoS engineering techniques address organisation and integration of diverse systems through the use of disciplined architectural frameworks and contractual modelling approaches. Advances in model-based CPS engineering address the additional challenges of integrating semantically heterogeneous models of discrete and continuous phenomena. This thesis combines these approaches to develop a coherent framework for the model-based engineering of CPSoSs. The proposed approach utilises architectural frameworks to aid in the development of rich abstract models of CPSoSs. This is accompanied by the specification of an automated transformation process to generate heterogeneous co-models based on the architectural description. Verification of the proposed engineering approach is undertaken by its application to a case study describing the control of trains over a section of rail network, in which the (cyber) behaviour of control infrastructure must be considered in conjunction with the (physical) dynamics of train movements. Using the proposed methods, the development of this CPSoS uses architectural descriptions to generate an executable model to enable the analysis of safety and efficiency implications of the implemented control logic. The utility of the approach is evaluated by consideration of the impact of the proposed techniques on advancing the suitability and maturity of baseline technologies for the engineering of CPSoS. It is concluded that the proposed architectural framework provides effective guidance for the production of rich architectural descriptions of CPSoSs, and that the conversion between architectural and executable models is viable for implementation in a suitable open tools framework

    Redesigning work organizations and technologies: experiences from European projects

    Currently distributed business process (re) design (resulting in components of business networks) basically relies on technical criteria. And that are the main purposes of most research projects supported by EC. Through the process of building a European Research Area, this means a strong influence in the national research programmes. However it is generally accepted that it should also take into account social criteria and aspects such as the quality of working life, or participation in decision processes. Those were some of the objectives of projects in de 80s decade, and framed some of the main concepts and scientific approaches to work organisation. The democratic participation of network and organisations members in the design process is a critical success factor. This is not accepted by everyone, but is based in sufficient case studies. Nevertheless, in order to achieve an optimization that can satisfying the requirements of agility of a network of enterprises, more complex design methods must be developed. Thus, the support to the collaborative design of distributed work in a network of enterprises, through a concurrent approaching business processes, work organisation and task content is a key factor to achieve such purposes.     ENACT is a research project funded by the European Commission under its H2020 program. The project consortium consists of twelve industry and research member organisations spread across the whole EU. The overall goal of the ENACT project was to provide a novel set of solutions to enable DevOps in the realm of trustworthy Smart IoT Systems. Smart IoT Systems (SIS) are complex systems involving not only sensors but also actuators with control loops distributed all across the IoT, Edge and Cloud infrastructure. Since smart IoT systems typically operate in a changing and often unpredictable environment, the ability of these systems to continuously evolve and adapt to their new environment is decisive to ensure and increase their trustworthiness, quality and user experience. DevOps has established itself as a software development life-cycle model that encourages developers to continuously bring new features to the system under operation without sacrificing quality.
