Adoption of vehicular ad hoc networking protocols by networked robots
This paper focuses on the utilization of wireless networking in the robotics domain. Many researchers have already equipped their robots with wireless communication capabilities, stimulated by the observation that multi-robot systems tend to have several advantages over their single-robot counterparts. Typically, this integration of wireless communication is tackled in a quite pragmatic manner, only a few authors presented novel Robotic Ad Hoc Network (RANET) protocols that were designed specifically with robotic use cases in mind. This is in sharp contrast with the domain of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This observation is the starting point of this paper. If the results of previous efforts focusing on VANET protocols could be reused in the RANET domain, this could lead to rapid progress in the field of networked robots. To investigate this possibility, this paper provides a thorough overview of the related work in the domain of robotic and vehicular ad hoc networks. Based on this information, an exhaustive list of requirements is defined for both types. It is concluded that the most significant difference lies in the fact that VANET protocols are oriented towards low throughput messaging, while RANET protocols have to support high throughput media streaming as well. Although not always with equal importance, all other defined requirements are valid for both protocols. This leads to the conclusion that cross-fertilization between them is an appealing approach for future RANET research. To support such developments, this paper concludes with the definition of an appropriate working plan

A Simple and Robust Dissemination Protocol for VANETs
Several promising applications for Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) exist. For most of these applications, the communication among vehicles is envisioned to be based on the broadcasting of messages. This is due to the inherent highly mobile environment and importance of these messages to vehicles nearby. To deal with broadcast communication, dissemination protocols must be defined in such a way as to (i) prevent the so-called broadcast storm problem in dense networks and (ii) deal with disconnected networks in sparse topologies. In this paper, we present a Simple and Robust Dissemination (SRD) protocol that deals with these requirements in both sparse and dense networks. Its novelty lies in its simplicity and robustness. Simplicity is achieved by considering only two states (cluster tail and non- tail) for a vehicle. Robustness is achieved by assigning message delivery responsibility to multiple vehicles in sparse networks. Our simulation results show that SRD achieves high delivery ratio and low end-to-end delay under diverse traffic conditions
SSOPS based Solution to Improve QoS in VANET
Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) is an emerging network technology derived from ad-hoc networks. This paper provides the state-of-the-art of VANETs and provides optimum proposal by improving Quality of Service (QoS.) Today, wireless systems are preferred over wired systems and these are gaining popularity as it provides wireless connectivity to the users irrespective of their geographic position, VANET is one of them. VANETs are installed to minimize the risk of road accidents and to improve passenger comfort by permitting the vehicles to exchange various types of data. In this paper, the Signal Strength based Optimum Path Selection (SSOPS) based solution on how to mitigate the QoS issues that exists while using the existing methods are discussed. Performance metrics and routing in vehicular ad hoc networks
The aim of this thesis is to propose a method for enhancing the performance of Vehicular Ad hoc
Networks (VANETs). The focus is on a routing protocol where performance metrics are used to
inform the routing decisions made. The thesis begins by analysing routing protocols in a random
mobility scenario with a wide range of node densities. A Cellular Automata algorithm is
subsequently applied in order to create a mobility model of a highway, and wide range of density
and transmission range are tested. Performance metrics are introduced to assist the prediction of
likely route failure. The Good Link Availability (GLA) and Good Route Availability (GRA)
metrics are proposed which can be used for a pre-emptive action that has the potential to give
better performance. The implementation framework for this method using the AODV routing
protocol is also discussed. The main outcomes of this research can be summarised as identifying
and formulating methods for pre-emptive actions using a Cellular Automata with NS-2 to
simulate VANETs, and the implementation method within the AODV routing protocol
