    Data in Business Process Models. A Preliminary Empirical Study

    Traditional activity-centric process modeling languages treat data as simple black boxes acting as input or output for activities. Many alternate and emerging process modeling paradigms, such as case handling and artifact-centric process modeling, give data a more central role. This is achieved by introducing lifecycles and states for data objects, which is beneficial when modeling data-or knowledge-intensive processes. We assume that traditional activity-centric process modeling languages lack the capabilities to adequately capture the complexity of such processes. To verify this assumption we conducted an online interview among BPM experts. The results not only allow us to identify various profiles of persons modeling business processes, but also the problems that exist in contemporary modeling languages w.r.t. The modeling of business data. Overall, this preliminary empirical study confirms the necessity of data-awareness in process modeling notations in general

    The realities of the 21st-century learner require that schools and educators fundamentally change their practice. "Educators must produce college- and career-ready graduates that reflect the future these students will face. And, they must facilitate learning through means that align with the defining attributes of this generation of learners."Today, we know more than ever about how students learn, acknowledging that the process isn't the same for every student and doesn't remain the same for each individual, depending upon maturation and the content being learned. We know that students want to progress at a pace that allows them to master new concepts and skills, to access a variety of resources, to receive timely feedback on their progress, to demonstrate their knowledge in multiple ways and to get direction, support and feedback from—as well as collaborate with—experts, teachers, tutors and other students.The result is a growing demand for student-centered, transformative digital learning using competency education as an underpinning.iNACOL released this paper to illustrate the technical requirements and functionalities that learning management systems need to shift toward student-centered instructional models. This comprehensive framework will help districts and schools determine what systems to use and integrate as they being their journey toward student-centered learning, as well as how systems integration aligns with their organizational vision, educational goals and strategic plans.Educators can use this report to optimize student learning and promote innovation in their own student-centered learning environments.     Digitalisation of Development and Supply Networks: Sequential and Platform-Driven Innovations

    We draw from an eight-year dataset of 98 organisational entities involved in pre-competitive innovation networks across the UK pharmaceutical sector. These data map into three networks that are representative of: (i) a product development-led sequential pathway that begins with digitalised product development, followed by digitalisation of supply networks, (ii) a supply network-led sequential pathway that starts with digitalised supply networks, followed by digitalisation of product development, and (iii) a parallel — platform-driven — pathway that enables simultaneous digitalisation of development, production, and supply networks. We draw upon extant literature to assess these network structures along three dimensions — strategic intent, the integrative roles of nodes with high centrality, and innovation performance. We conduct within-case and cross-case analyses to postulate 10 research propositions that compare and contrast modalities for sequential and platform-based digitalisation involving collaborative innovation networks. With sequential development, our propositions are congruent with conventional pathways for mitigating innovation risks through modular moves. On the other hand, we posit that platform-based design rules, rather than modular moves, mitigate the risks for parallel development pathways, and lead to novel development and delivery mechanisms

    Measurement and reporting of climate-smart agriculture: technical guidance for a countrycentric process

    Given the extent of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) initiatives at project, national, regional and global levels, there is increasing interest in tracking progress in implementing CSA at national level. CSA is also expected to contribute to higher-level goals (e.g., the Paris Agreement, Africa Union’s Vision 25x25, and the Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs], etc.). Measurement and reporting of climate-smart agriculture (MR of CSA) provides intelligence on necessary the status, effectiveness, efficiency and impacts of interventions, which is critical for meeting stakeholders’ diverse management and reporting needs. In this paper, we build the case for a stakeholder-driven, country-centric framework for MR of CSA, which aims to increase coordination and coherence across stakeholders’ MR activities, while also aligning national reporting with reporting on international commitments. We present practical guidance on how to develop an integrated MR framework, drawing on findings from a multi-country assessment of needs, opportunities and capacities for national MR of CSA. The content of a unified MR framework is determined by stakeholders’ activities (how they promote CSA), needs (why MR is useful to them) and current capacities to conduct periodic monitoring, evaluation and reporting (how ready are institutions, staff and finances). Our analysis found that explicit demand for integration of data systems and active engagement of stakeholders throughout the entire process are key ingredients for building a MR system that is relevant, useful and acted upon. Based on these lessons, we identify a seven-step framework for stakeholders to develop a comprehensive information system for MR of progress in implementing CSA

    Establishing A Systematic Outline for Operational Excellence Model and Proposing a Comprehensive Model

    Manufacturing organizations adopt operational excellence strategies to meet performance targets. While Lean Manufacturing (LM) is widely used in OPEX and is supported by many industries case studies, but faces two major challenges. First, there is an absence of a standard framework to implement LM. Second, the framework does not explicitly address employee engagement and quality of life in the continuous improvement process. This has led to low reported levels of sustainability of LM. People-Centric Operational Excellence (PCOM) has been presented as a response to challenges in LM. PCOM comprises four modules: problem definition, design of metrics, design of reliability-based solutions, and alignment of solutions with employee quality of life. However, PCOM is not supported by an implementation template and case studies for the framework are not well documented in the literature. This paper compares PCOM with LM using literature-driven criteria, develops an implementation-ready template for PCOM, and documents case studies in PCOM for the manufacturing sector. Moreover, this paper presents the conceptual basis for a new model, Comprehensive PCOM or CPCOM, that combines the strengths of LM and PCOM and provides an initial roadmap for its implementation

Such division is borne out in the increasingly high rates of information systems failure within practice. As strategic stewards of the organisation, top managers are noted to play a vital role in supporting information systems. Support is said to be a multifaceted concept requiring both thought and action.     Tailoring PMI and OGC frameworks for IT project portfolio management

    Tese de Doutoramento - Programa Doutoral em Tecnologias e Sistemas de InformaçãoPrivate non-profit organizations that are dedicated to developing research and development (R&D) projects with the University, through a context of interface between Universities and companies, are currently recognized in Portugal as Technological Interface Centres. These organizations develop applied research projects between TRL 4 and 8 for companies in close collaboration with the research units of the Universities. As with any organization with no budget coming from the state, its main strategy is to efficiently and effectively manage the project portfolio to ensure control of execution costs as well as the expected quality of projects delivered to customers and partners. The currently available project portfolio management frameworks are not sufficiently clear as to how processes or practices suggested to practitioners should effectively be applied. In the specific field of Information Technology (IT), there is at least one framework for supporting portfolios management, but the level of detail in the adoption of the practices is (insufficiently) generic. This thesis intends to configure an IT project portfolios management framework, based on the coordinated (extended subsets) adaptation of the two main frameworks currently in the area: PMI and OGC. This configuration required the alignment between PMI and OGC frameworks, through a map of dependencies between processes, as well as the mapping between artefacts and processes. As a case study to test this framework, a Portuguese organization was chosen, formally recognized as a Technological Interface Centre, where two portfolios of IT projects in R&D contexts were characterized and analysed in light of the framework's techniques.As organizações privadas sem fins lucrativos que se dedicam a desenvolver projetos de investigação e desenvolvimento junto das Universidades, através de um contexto de interface entre Universidades e empresas, são atualmente reconhecidas em Portugal, como Centros de Interface Tecnológicos. Estas organizações desenvolvem projetos de investigação aplicada entre TRL 4 e 8 para as empresas, em colaboração estreita com as Unidades de Investigação das Universidades. Como em qualquer organização, sem orçamento proveniente do Estado, a sua estratégia principal é gerir com eficiência e eficácia o portfólio de projetos, de modo a garantir o controlo dos custos de execução, bem como a expetativa de qualidade dos projetos entregues aos clientes e parceiros. As frameworks de gestão de portfólio de projetos atualmente disponíveis não são suficientemente claras em relação à forma como processos ou práticas sugeridas aos profissionais devem efetivamente ser aplicados. No domínio específico das Tecnologias da Informação (TI) existe, pelo menos, uma framework de suporte à gestão de portfólios, mas o nível de detalhe na adoção das práticas é (insuficientemente) genérico. Com esta tese pretende-se configurar uma framework de gestão de portfólios de projetos de TI, a partir da adaptação coordenada (extended subsets) das duas principais frameworks atualmente existentes na área: a do PMI e a do OGC. A referida configuração exigiu o alinhamento entre frameworks do PMI e OGC através dum mapa de dependências entre processos, bem como o mapeamento entre artefactos e processos.
