Optimizing Service Differentiation Scheme with Sized-based Queue Management in DiffServ Networks
In this paper we introduced Modified Sized-based Queue Management as a
dropping scheme that aims to fairly prioritize and allocate more service to
VoIP traffic over bulk data like FTP as the former one usually has small packet
size with less impact to the network congestion. In the same time, we want to
guarantee that this prioritization is fair enough for both traffic types. On
the other hand we study the total link delay over the congestive link with the
attempt to alleviate this congestion as much as possible at the by function of
early congestion notification. Our M-SQM scheme has been evaluated with NS2
experiments to measure the packets received from both and total link-delay for
different traffic. The performance evaluation results of M-SQM have been
validated and graphically compared with the performance of other three legacy
AQMs (RED, RIO, and PI). It is depicted that our M-SQM outperformed these AQMs

Datacenter Traffic Control: Understanding Techniques and Trade-offs
Datacenters provide cost-effective and flexible access to scalable compute
and storage resources necessary for today's cloud computing needs. A typical
datacenter is made up of thousands of servers connected with a large network
and usually managed by one operator. To provide quality access to the variety
of applications and services hosted on datacenters and maximize performance, it
deems necessary to use datacenter networks effectively and efficiently.
Datacenter traffic is often a mix of several classes with different priorities
and requirements. This includes user-generated interactive traffic, traffic
with deadlines, and long-running traffic. To this end, custom transport
protocols and traffic management techniques have been developed to improve
datacenter network performance.
In this tutorial paper, we review the general architecture of datacenter
networks, various topologies proposed for them, their traffic properties,
general traffic control challenges in datacenters and general traffic control
objectives. The purpose of this paper is to bring out the important
characteristics of traffic control in datacenters and not to survey all
existing solutions (as it is virtually impossible due to massive body of
existing research). We hope to provide readers with a wide range of options and
factors while considering a variety of traffic control mechanisms. We discuss
various characteristics of datacenter traffic control including management
schemes, transmission control, traffic shaping, prioritization, load balancing,
multipathing, and traffic scheduling. Next, we point to several open challenges
as well as new and interesting networking paradigms. At the end of this paper,
we briefly review inter-datacenter networks that connect geographically
dispersed datacenters which have been receiving increasing attention recently

ENHANCEMENT OF QoS IN MULTIMEDIA TRANSMISSION THROUGH OPTIMAL DELAY BASED FRAGMENTATION
ABSTRACT With the growth of different networking technology and multimedia technology the real time delivery of multimedia content becomes an imperative field. Most of the applications such as video conferencing need multimedia transmission techniques that send multimedia data from one end to another with enhanced efficiency in quality and minimized delay. Conventional packet fragmentation schemes shed a packet if all its fragments are not received correctly. But video data is loss tolerant and delay-sensitive. In this paper we propose a new family of delay based fragmentation algorithm which reduces the packet loss and delay thereby attain Quality of service in Multimedia applications
Policy based network management of legacy network elements in next generation networks for voice services
Magister Scientiae - MScTelecommunication companies, service providers and large companies are now
adapting converged multi-service Next Generation Networks (NGNs). Network
management is shifting from managing Network Elements (NE) to managing services. This paradigm shift coincides with the rapid development of Quality of Service (QoS) protocols for IP networks. NEs and services are managed with Policy Based Network Management (PBNM) which is most concerned with managing services that require QoS using the Common Open Policy Service (COPS) Protocol. These services include Voice over IP (VoIP), video conferencing and video streaming. It follows that legacy NEs without support for QoS need to be replaced and/or excluded from the network. However, since most of these services run over IP, and legacy NEs easily supports IP,
it may be unnecessary to throw away legacy NEs if it can be made to fit within a PBNM approach. Our approach enables an existing PBNM system to include legacy NEs in its management paradigm. The Proxy-Policy Enforcement Point (P-PEP) and Queuing Policy Enforcement Point (Q-PEP) can enforce some degree of traffic shaping on a gateway to the legacy portion of the network. The P-PEP utilises firewall techniques using the common legacy and contemporary NE management protocol Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) while the Q-PEP uses queuing techniques in the form Class Based Queuing (CBQ) and Random Early Discard (RED) for traffic control.South Afric

Or que l’allocation des ressources et la gestion du traffic, tout en maintenant la qualité de service (QoS) ; constituent un défi majeur en terme d’équité et de débit perçu au niveau du terminal. Data-driven System Design in Service Operations
The service industry has become an increasingly important component in the world's economy. Simultaneously, the data collected from service systems has grown rapidly in both size and complexity due to the rapid spread of information technology, providing new opportunities and challenges for operations management researchers. This dissertation aims to explore methodologies to extract information from data and provide powerful insights to guide the design of service delivery systems. To do this, we analyze three applications in the retail, healthcare, and IT service industries. In the first application, we conduct an empirical study to analyze how waiting in queue in the context of a retail store affects customers' purchasing behavior. The methodology combines a novel dataset collected via video recognition technology with traditional point-of-sales data. We find that waiting in queue has a nonlinear impact on purchase incidence and that customers appear to focus mostly on the length of the queue, without adjusting enough for the speed at which the line moves. We also find that customers' sensitivity to waiting is heterogeneous and negatively correlated with price sensitivity. These findings have important implications for queueing system design and pricing management under congestion. The second application focuses on disaster planning in healthcare. According to a U.S. government mandate, in a catastrophic event, the New York City metropolitan areas need to be capable of caring for 400 burn-injured patients during a catastrophe, which far exceeds the current burn bed capacity. We develop a new system for prioritizing patients for transfer to burn beds as they become available and demonstrate its superiority over several other triage methods. Based on data from previous burn catastrophes, we study the feasibility of being able to admit the required number of patients to burn beds within the critical three-to-five-day time frame. We find that this is unlikely and that the ability to do so is highly dependent on the type of event and the demographics of the patient population. This work has implications for how disaster plans in other metropolitan areas should be developed. In the third application, we study workers' productivity in a global IT service delivery system, where service requests from possibly globally distributed customers are managed centrally and served by agents. Based on a novel dataset which tracks the detailed time intervals an agent spends on all business related activities, we develop a methodology to study the variation of productivity over time motivated by econometric tools from survival analysis. This approach can be used to identify different mechanisms by which workload affects productivity. The findings provide important insights for the design of the workload allocation policies which account for agents' workload management behavior
Simulation and analysis of network traffic for efficient and reliable information transfer
With the growing commercial importance of the Internet and the development of new real-time, connection-oriented services like IP-telephony and electronic commerce resilience is becoming a key issue in the design of TP-based networks. Two emerging technologies, which can accomplish the task of efficient information transfer, are Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Differentiated Services. A main benefit of MPLS is the ability to introduce traffic-engineering concepts due to its connection-oriented characteristic. With MPLS it is possible to assign different paths for packets through the network. Differentiated services divides traffic into different classes and treat them differently, especially when there is a shortage of network resources. In this thesis, a framework was proposed to integrate the above two technologies and its performance in providing load balancing and improving QoS was evaluated. Simulation and analysis of this framework demonstrated that the combination of MPLS and Differentiated services is a powerful tool for QoS provisioning in IP networks

Stochastic Models for Capacity Planning in Healthcare Delivery: Case Studies in an Outpatient, Inpatient and Surgical Setting
U.S. healthcare system has become far too complex and costly to sustain and operations research has much to contribute in improving health systems by addressing a large spectrum of problems. We study capacity planning in healthcare while considering the case-mix of patients, using stochastic modeling in different application areas: primary care, inpatient bed allocation and (spine) surgery scheduling. This body of work was developed over four years of collaborative research with hospitals and healthcare providers.
The main objective of our research in primary care is to optimize the patient mix of primary care physicians in a group practice to maximize patient-clinician continuity and access. To model case-mix, we use the number of simultaneous chronic conditions (comorbidities) a patient has as a predictor of the number of appointment requests. We later extend the optimization framework and use queuing theory to develop methodologies to quantify and evaluate access to care and continuity of care for patient visits with different urgencies.
From an inpatient care perspective, we develop an empirically calibrated simulation model to represent a time-varying multi-server queuing network model with multiple patient classes. Our main focus has been on quantifying the impact of discharge profiles to alleviate inpatient bed congestions.
The main objective of our research in surgical care is to create better patient access and improve revenue as a result of increased surgical capacity with more efficient schedules and an improved patient mix, using a multi-stage mixed integer optimization
Dual-Mode Congestion Control Mechanism for Video Services
Recent studies have shown that video services represent over half of Internet traffic, with a growing trend. Therefore, video traffic plays a major role in network congestion. Currently on the Internet, congestion control is mainly implemented through overprovisioning and TCP congestion control. Although some video services use TCP to implement their transport services in a manner that actually works, TCP is not an ideal protocol for use by all video applications. For example, UDP is often considered to be more suitable for use by real-time video applications. Unfortunately, UDP does not implement congestion control. Therefore, these UDP-based video services operate without any kind of congestion control support unless congestion control is implemented on the application layer. There are also arguments against massive overprovisioning. Due to these factors, there is still a need to equip video services with proper congestion control.Most of the congestion control mechanisms developed for the use of video services can only offer either low priority or TCP-friendly real-time services. There is no single congestion control mechanism currently that is suitable and can be widely used for all kinds of video services. This thesis provides a study in which a new dual-mode congestion control mechanism is proposed. This mechanism can offer congestion control services for both service types. The mechanism includes two modes, a backward-loading mode and a real-time mode. The backward-loading mode works like a low-priority service where the bandwidth is given away to other connections once the load level of a network is high enough. In contrast, the real-time mode always demands its fair share of the bandwidth.The behavior of the new mechanism and its friendliness toward itself, and the TCP protocol, have been investigated by means of simulations and real network tests. It was found that this kind of congestion control approach could be suitable for video services. The new mechanism worked acceptably. In particular, the mechanism behaved toward itself in a very friendly way in most cases. The averaged TCP fairness was at a good level. In the worst cases, the faster connections received about 1.6 times as much bandwidth as the slower connections
