    Median evidential c-means algorithm and its application to community detection

    Median clustering is of great value for partitioning relational data. In this paper, a new prototype-based clustering method, called Median Evidential C-Means (MECM), which is an extension of median c-means and median fuzzy c-means on the theoretical framework of belief functions is proposed. The median variant relaxes the restriction of a metric space embedding for the objects but constrains the prototypes to be in the original data set. Due to these properties, MECM could be applied to graph clustering problems. A community detection scheme for social networks based on MECM is investigated and the obtained credal partitions of graphs, which are more refined than crisp and fuzzy ones, enable us to have a better understanding of the graph structures. An initial prototype-selection scheme based on evidential semi-centrality is presented to avoid local premature convergence and an evidential modularity function is defined to choose the optimal number of communities. Finally, experiments in synthetic and real data sets illustrate the performance of MECM and show its difference to other methods

    International audienceThis paper deals with the proposition of a prognostic approach that enables to face up to the problem of lack of information and missing prior knowledge. Developments rely on the assumption that real data can be gathered from the system (online). The approach consists in three phases. An information theory-based criterion is first used to isolate the most useful observations with regards to the functioning modes of the system (feature selection step). An evolving neuro-fuzzy system is then used for online prediction of observations at any horizons (prediction step). The predicted observations are classified into the possible functioning modes using an evidential Markovian classifier based on Dempster-Shafer theory (classification step). The whole is illustrated on a problem concerning the prediction of an engine health. The approach appears to be very efficient since it enables to early but accurately estimate the failure instant, even with few learning data

    International audienceCondition-based maintenance is nowadays considered as a key-process in maintenance strategies and prognostics appears to be a very promising activity as it should permit to not engage inopportune spending. Various approaches have been developed and data-driven methods are increasingly applied. The training step of these methods generally requires huge datasets since a lot of methods rely on probability theory and/or on artificial neural networks. This step is thus time-consuming and generally made in batch mode which can be restrictive in practical application when few data are available. A method for prognostics is proposed to face up this problem of lack of information and missing prior knowledge. The approach is based on the integration of three complementary modules and aims at predicting the failure mode early while the system can switch between several functioning modes. The three modules are: 1) observation selection based on information theory and Choquet Integral, 2) prediction relying on an evolving real-time neuro-fuzzy system and 3) classification into one of the possible functioning modes using an evidential Markovian classifier based on Dempster-Shafer theory. Experiments concern the prediction of an engine health based on more than twenty observations

    Traffic Scene Perception for Automated Driving with Top-View Grid Maps

    Ein automatisiertes Fahrzeug muss sichere, sinnvolle und schnelle Entscheidungen auf Basis seiner Umgebung treffen. Dies benötigt ein genaues und recheneffizientes Modell der Verkehrsumgebung. Mit diesem Umfeldmodell sollen Messungen verschiedener Sensoren fusioniert, gefiltert und nachfolgenden Teilsysteme als kompakte, aber aussagekräftige Information bereitgestellt werden. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Modellierung der Verkehrsszene auf Basis von Top-View Grid Maps. Im Vergleich zu anderen Umfeldmodellen ermöglichen sie eine frühe Fusion von Distanzmessungen aus verschiedenen Quellen mit geringem Rechenaufwand sowie eine explizite Modellierung von Freiraum. Nach der Vorstellung eines Verfahrens zur Bodenoberflächenschätzung, das die Grundlage der Top-View Modellierung darstellt, werden Methoden zur Belegungs- und Elevationskartierung für Grid Maps auf Basis von mehreren, verrauschten, teilweise widersprüchlichen oder fehlenden Distanzmessungen behandelt. Auf der resultierenden, sensorunabhängigen Repräsentation werden anschließend Modelle zur Detektion von Verkehrsteilnehmern sowie zur Schätzung von Szenenfluss, Odometrie und Tracking-Merkmalen untersucht. Untersuchungen auf öffentlich verfügbaren Datensätzen und einem Realfahrzeug zeigen, dass Top-View Grid Maps durch on-board LiDAR Sensorik geschätzt und verlässlich sicherheitskritische Umgebungsinformationen wie Beobachtbarkeit und Befahrbarkeit abgeleitet werden können. Schließlich werden Verkehrsteilnehmer als orientierte Bounding Boxen mit semantischen Klassen, Geschwindigkeiten und Tracking-Merkmalen aus einem gemeinsamen Modell zur Objektdetektion und Flussschätzung auf Basis der Top-View Grid Maps bestimmt

    Intensional Cyberforensics

    This work focuses on the application of intensional logic to cyberforensic analysis and its benefits and difficulties are compared with the finite-state-automata approach. This work extends the use of the intensional programming paradigm to the modeling and implementation of a cyberforensics investigation process with backtracing of event reconstruction, in which evidence is modeled by multidimensional hierarchical contexts, and proofs or disproofs of claims are undertaken in an eductive manner of evaluation. This approach is a practical, context-aware improvement over the finite state automata (FSA) approach we have seen in previous work. As a base implementation language model, we use in this approach a new dialect of the Lucid programming language, called Forensic Lucid, and we focus on defining hierarchical contexts based on intensional logic for the distributed evaluation of cyberforensic expressions. We also augment the work with credibility factors surrounding digital evidence and witness accounts, which have not been previously modeled. The Forensic Lucid programming language, used for this intensional cyberforensic analysis, formally presented through its syntax and operational semantics.     Investigating Deep Learning Model Calibration for Classification Problems in Mechanics

    Recently, there has been a growing interest in applying machine learning methods to problems in engineering mechanics. In particular, there has been significant interest in applying deep learning techniques to predicting the mechanical behavior of heterogeneous materials and structures. Researchers have shown that deep learning methods are able to effectively predict mechanical behavior with low error for systems ranging from engineered composites, to geometrically complex metamaterials, to heterogeneous biological tissue. However, there has been comparatively little attention paid to deep learning model calibration, i.e., the match between predicted probabilities of outcomes and the true probabilities of outcomes. In this work, we perform a comprehensive investigation into ML model calibration across seven open access engineering mechanics datasets that cover three distinct types of mechanical problems. Specifically, we evaluate both model and model calibration error for multiple machine learning methods, and investigate the influence of ensemble averaging and post hoc model calibration via temperature scaling. Overall, we find that ensemble averaging of deep neural networks is both an effective and consistent tool for improving model calibration, while temperature scaling has comparatively limited benefits. Looking forward, we anticipate that this investigation will lay the foundation for future work in developing mechanics specific approaches to deep learning model calibration.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure
