    Electronic countermeasures applied to passive radar

    Passive Radar (PR) is a form of bistatic radar that utilises existing transmitter infrastructure such as FM radio, digital audio and video broadcasts (DAB and DVB-T/T2), cellular base station transmitters, and satellite-borne illuminators like DVB-S instead of a dedicated radar transmitter. Extensive research into PR has been performed over the last two decades across various industries with the technology maturing to a point where it is becoming commercially viable. Nevertheless, despite the abundance of PR literature, there is a scarcity of open literature pertaining to electronic countermeasures (ECM) applied to PR. This research makes the novel contribution of a comprehensive exploration and validation of various ECM techniques and their effectiveness when applied to PR. Extensive research has been conducted to assess the inherent properties of the lluminators of Opportunity to identify their possible weaknesses for the purpose of applying targeted ECM. Similarly, potential jamming signals have also been researched to evaluate their effectiveness as bespoke ECM signals. Whilst different types of PR exist, this thesis focuses specifically on ECM applied to FM radio and DVB-T2 based PR. The results show noise jamming to be effective against FM radio based PR where jamming can be achieved with relatively low jamming power. A waveform study is performed to determine the optimal jamming waveform for an FM radio based PR. The importance of an effective direct signal interference (DSI) canceller is also shown as a means of suppressing the jamming signal. A basic overview of counter-ECM (ECCM) is discussed to counter potential jamming of FM based PR. The two main processing techniques for DVB-T2 based PR, mismatched and inverse filtering, have been investigated and their performance in the presence of jamming evaluated. The deterministic components of the DVB-T2 waveform are shown to be an effective form of attack for both mismatched filtering and inverse filtering techniques. Basic ECCM is also presented to counter potential pilot attacks on DVB-T2 based PR. Using measured data from a PR demonstrator, the application and effectiveness of each jamming technique is clearly demonstrated, evaluated and quantified

    Improved Signal Processing Techniques for Passive Radar Applications. Design of a Technological Demonstrator

    Las sociedades modernas deben hacer frente a numerosas situaciones críticas en las que la detección y el seguimiento de blancos es un problema de especial interés. En este contexto, los radares pasivos son tecnologías emergentes que están siendo objeto de una intensa actividad investigadora a nivel internacional. Su principal ventaja frente a los radares activos es la utilización de la señal transmitida por sistemas de comunicación, en lugar de un transmisor propio. La ausencia del transmisor da lugar a una importante reducción de costes de diseño, desarrollo, despliegue y mantenimiento, y elimina los problemas asociados a la emisión de ondas electromagnética (salud pública e interferencias) y la necesidad de una asignación de frecuencias. Por otro lado, la utilización de transmisores no controlados diseñados para garantizar una calidad de servicio en un sistema de comunicación, y no con propósitos de detección, complica las tareas de detección y seguimiento de los blancos. El objetivo de la Tesis doctoral es el estudio de los radares pasivos y el desarrollo de un demostrador para la adquisición de datos reales en condiciones controladas, que permita el diseño de mejoras en las técnicas de procesado de señal. La capacidad detectora de estos sistemas en escenarios aéreos ha sido probada en numerosos trabajos, por lo que la presente Tesis se ha centrado en escenarios terrestres, caracterizados por blancos con bajo retorno radar, bajo Doppler y entornos semiurbanos con diferentes tipos de relieve y la presencia de edificios. La naturaleza multiestática de los radares pasivos requiere de un análisis detallado del impacto de la geometría del sistema en las resoluciones alcanzables y en la definición de requisitos específicos de los sistemas de antenas y las cadenas receptoras. Este estudio se ha realizado para sistemas basados en iluminadores terrestres y satelitales, cuyas geometrías y pérdidas de propagación son completamente diferentes. Se han analizado sistemas basados en la Televisión Digital Terrestre, la Televisión Digital vía Satélite (con iluminadores embarcados en satélites geoestacionarios) y en sistemas radar de observación de la Tierra (con sensores embarcados en satélites de órbita baja, cuyo movimiento genera geometrías variables con el tiempo). El estudio se ha completado con la caracterización de la sección radar biestática de los blancos de interés. Una vez desarrolladas las cadenas de adquisición del demostrador, se realizaron numerosas campañas de medidas y los datos adquiridos se utilizaron en un estudio detallado de las técnicas de reducción de las interferencias debidas a la señal del iluminador captada por la antena de vigilancia y otras fuentes de clutter. Se propuso una metodología de análisis y diseño basada en la definición de parámetros directamente relacionados con las capacidades detectoras del sistema. La metodología propuesta permitió el diseño de mejoras en las etapas de reducción de interferencias que fueron validadas en nuevas campañas de medidas con blancos colaborativos provistos de receptores GPS. Durante el desarrollo de la Tesis, se produjo la liberalización del dividendo digital y una nueva asignación de frecuencias caracterizada por una gran variabilidad y dispersión de los canales. Ante este nuevo escenario, las cadenas de adquisición se actualizaron con el objetivo de aumentar su robustez respecto de los canales disponibles en el emplazamiento elegido. Se propuso una solución de bajo coste basada en conversores de frecuencia comerciales y etapas de calibrado diseñadas para compensar los elevados “offsets” frecuenciales de estos sistemas. Con el fin de mejorar la cobertura y la resolución angular del demostrador, se abordó el estudio de los requisitos de diseño de sistemas de antenas basados en arrays, con el fin de incorporar técnicas de beamforming que permitiesen la mejora de las técnicas de reducción de interferencias y el diseño de detectores y etapas de seguimiento en el espacio rango-Doppler-azimuth, así como la implementación de técnicas de estimación de la dirección de llegada

    OFDM passive radar employing compressive processing in MIMO configurations

    A key advantage of passive radar is that it provides a means of performing position detection and tracking without the need for transmission of energy pulses. In this respect, passive radar systems utilising (receiving) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications signals from transmitters using OFDM standards such as long term evolution (LTE), WiMax or WiFi, are considered. Receiving a stronger reference signal for the matched filtering, detecting a lower target signature is one of the challenges in the passive radar. Impinging at the receiver, the OFDM waveforms supply two-dimensional virtual uniform rectangul ararray with the first and second dimensions refer to time delays and Doppler frequencies respectively. A subspace method, multiple signals classification (MUSIC) algorithm, demonstrated the signal extraction using multiple time samples. Apply normal measurements, this problem requires high computational resources regarding the number of OFDM subcarriers. For sub-Nyquist sampling, compressive sensing (CS) becomes attractive. A single snap shot measurement can be applied with Basis Pursuit (BP), whereas l1-singular value decomposition (l1-SVD) is applied for the multiple snapshots. Employing multiple transmitters, the diversity in the detection process can be achieved. While a passive means of attaining three-dimensional large-set measurements is provided by co-located receivers, there is a significant computational burden in terms of the on-line analysis of such data sets. In this thesis, the passive radar problem is presented as a mathematically sparse problem and interesting solutions, BP and l1-SVD as well as Bayesian compressive sensing, fast-Besselk, are considered. To increase the possibility of target signal detection, beamforming in the compressive domain is also introduced with the application of conve xoptimization and subspace orthogonality. An interference study is also another problem when reconstructing the target signal. The networks of passive radars are employed using stochastic geometry in order to understand the characteristics of interference, and the effect of signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). The results demonstrate the outstanding performance of l1-SVD over MUSIC when employing multiple snapshots. The single snapshot problem along with fast-BesselK multiple-input multiple-output configuration can be solved using fast-BesselK and this allows the compressive beamforming for detection capability

    MAC layer assisted localization in wireless environments with multiple sensors and multiple emitters

    Extreme emitter density (EED) RF environments, defined as 10k-100k emitters within a footprint of less than 1 km squared, are becoming increasingly common with the proliferation of personal devices containing myriad communication standards (e.g. WLAN, Bluetooth, 4G, etc). Attendees at concerts, sporting events, and other such large-scale events desire to be connected at all times, creating tremendous spectrum management challenges, especially in unlicensed frequencies such as 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 900 MHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands. In licensed bands, there are often critical communication systems such as two-way radios for emergency personnel which must be free from interference. Identification and localization of a non-conforming or interfering Emitter of Interest (EoI) is important for these critical systems. In this dissertation, research is conducted to improve localization for these EED RF environments by exploiting side information available at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. The primary contributions of this research are: (1) A testbed in Bobby Dodd football stadium consisting of three spatially distributed, time-synchronized RF Sensor Nodes (RFSN) collecting and archiving complex baseband samples for algorithm development and validation. (2) A modeling framework and analytical results on the benefits of exploiting the structure of the MAC layer for associating physical layer measurements, such as Time Difference of Arrivals (TDoA), to emitters. (3) A three stage localization algorithm exploiting time between packets and a constrained geometry to shrink the error ellipse of the emitter position estimate. The results are expected to improve localization accuracy in wireless environments when multiple sensors observe multiple emitters using a known communications protocol within a constrained geometry.Ph.D

    Millimeter-wave and terahertz imaging techniques

    This thesis presents the development and assessment of imaging techniques in the millimeterwave (mmW) and terahertz frequency bands. In the first part of the thesis, the development of a 94 GHz passive screener based on a total-power radiometer (TPR) with mechanical beamscanning is presented. Several images have been acquired with the TPR screener demonstrator, either in indoor and outdoor environments, serving as a testbed to acquire the know-how required to perform the research presented in the following parts of the thesis. In the second part of the thesis, a theoretical research on the performance of near-field passive screeners is described. This part stands out the tradeoff between spatial and radiometric resolutions taking into account the image distortion produced by placing the scenario in the near-field range of the radiometer array. In addition, the impact of the decorrelation effect in the image has been also studied simulating the reconstruction technique of a synthetic aperture radiometer. Guidelines to choose the proper radiometer depending on the application, the scenario, the acquisition speed and the tolerated image distortion are given in this part. In the third part of the thesis, the development of a correlation technique with optical processing applicable to millimeter-wave interferometric radiometers is described. The technique is capable of correlating wide-bandwidth signals in the optical domain with no loss of radiometric sensitivity. The theoretical development of the method as well as measurements validating the suitability to correlate radiometric signals are presented in this part. In the final part of the thesis, the frequency band of the imaging problem is increased to frequencies beyond 100 GHz, covering the THz band. In this case the research is centered in tomographic techniques that include spectral information of the samples in the reconstructed images. The tomographic algorithm can provide detection and identification of chemical compounds that present a certain spectral footprint in the THz frequency band.Postprint (published version

    Comunicações sem fios confiáveis para aplicações veiculares

    Doutoramento em Engenharia ElectrotécnicaIn the last decades the number of vehicles travelling in European road has raised significantly. Unfortunately, this brought a very high number of road accidents and consequently various injuries and fatalities. Even after the introduction of passive safety systems, such as seat belts, airbags, and some active safety systems, such as electronic brake system (ABS) and electronic stabilization (ESP), the number of accidents is still too high. Approximately eight per cent of the fatal accidents occur in motorways, in the Portuguese case, the number of fatalities has remained constant in the first decade of the 21st century. The evolution of wireless communications, along with the north-American and European policies that reserve spectrum near the 5,9GHz band for safety applications in the vehicular environment, has lead to the development of several standards. Many of these applications are based on the possibility of using a wireless communication system to warn drivers and passengers of events occurring on the road that can put at risk their own safety. Some examples of safety applications are the hard-brake warning, the wrong-way warning and the accident warning. This work aims to contribute in defining a communication protocol that guarantees the timely dissemination of safety critical events, occurring in scenarios with a high number of vehicles or in the neighbourhood of so called motorway “blackspots”, to all vehicles in the zone of interest. To ensure information integrity and user trust, the proposed system is based on the motorway infrastructure, which will validate all events reported by the vehicles with the usage of several means, such as video surveillance or other sensors. The usage of motorway infrastructure that has full motorway coverage using fixed stations also known as road side units, allows to have a global vision of the interest zone, avoiding the problems associated to networks that depend solely on vehicle to vehicle communication, generally total ad-hoc networks. By using the infrastructure, it is possible to control medium access, avoiding possible badly intended intrusions and also avoiding the phenomenon known as alarm showers or broadcast storm that occur when all vehicles want to simultaneously access the medium to warn others of a safety event. The thesis presented in this document is that it is possible to guarantee in time information about safety events, using an architecture where the road side units are coordinated among themselves, and communicate with on board units (in vehicles) that dynamically register and deregister from the system. An exhaustive and systematic state of the art of safety applications and related research projects is done, followed by a study on the available wireless communications standards that are able to support them. The set of standards IEEE802.11p and ETSI-G5 was created for this purpose and is found to be the more adequate, but care is taken to define a scenario where WAVE enabled and non-enabled vehicles can coexist. The WAVE medium access control protocol suffers from collision problems that do not guarantee a bounded delay, therefore a new protocol (V-FTT) is proposed, based on the adaptation of the Flexible Time Triggered protocol to the vehicular field. A theoretical analysis of the V-FTT applied to WAVE and ETSI-G5 is done, including quantifying a real scenario based on the A5 motorway from Lisbon to Cascais, one of the busiest Portuguese motorways. We conclude the V-FTT protocol is feasible and guarantees a bounded delay.Nas últimas décadas tem-se assistido a um aumento do número de veículos a circular nas vias rodoviárias europeias, trazendo consigo um elevado número de acidentes e como consequência muitos feridos e vítimas mortais. Apesar da introdução de sistemas de segurança passivos, tais como cintos de segurança, airbags e de alguns sistemas de segurança activos, tais como o sistema electrónico de travagem (ABS) e o sistema electrónico de estabilidade (ESP), o número de acidentes continua a ser demasiado elevado. Aproximadamente oito por cento dos acidentes fatais na Europa ocorrem em auto-estradas, no caso Português, o número de vítimas mortais tem-se mantido constante ao longo da primeira década do século XXI. A evolução das comunicações sem fios, acompanhada de políticas europeias e norte-americanas no sentido de reservar frequências próximas dos 5,9GHz para aplicações de segurança no ambiente veicular, levou à especificação de várias normas. A maior parte destas aplicações baseiam-se na possibilidade de usar um sistema confiável de comunicação sem fios para alertar os condutores e passageiros de veículos para eventos ocorridos nas estradas que possam colocar em risco a sua segurança. Exemplos de aplicações de segurança crítica são o aviso de travagem brusca, o aviso de veículo em contra mão e o aviso de acidente na estrada. Este trabalho contribui para a definição de protocolos de comunicação capazes de garantir que a informação sobre eventos relacionados com situações de segurança crítica, que ocorram em cenários com um elevado número de veículos em zonas urbanas ou na vizinhança dos chamados “pontos negros” das auto-estradas, é disseminada com pontualidade por todos os veículos localizados na zona de interesse Por uma questão da integridade das comunicações e confiança dos condutores, o sistema proposto baseia-se na infra-estrutura do concessionário da auto-estrada, que validará os eventos reportados pelos veículos usando vários meios à sua disposição, como por exemplo sistemas de videovigilância e outros sensores. O uso de uma infra-estrutura de comunicações, que dispõe de cobertura integral a partir de estações fixas, permite uma visão global da zona coberta, evitando os problemas associados a redes baseadas apenas na comunicação entre veículos, que são em geral totalmente ad-hoc. O uso da infra-estrutura permite, entre outras vantagens, controlar o acesso ao meio, evitando simultaneamente intrusões de estranhos ao sistema e o fenómeno conhecido como “chuva de alarmes” desencadeado quando todos os veículos querem aceder simultaneamente ao meio para avisar os restantes da existência dum evento de segurança crítica. A tese apresentada neste documento defende que é possível garantir informação atempada sobre eventos que põem em risco a segurança dos veículos a partir de uma arquitectura de interligação entre as estações de comunicações fixas, coordenadas entre si, e unidades móveis (veículos) que se registam e se desligam dinamicamente do sistema. Nesta tese faz-se um levantamento exaustivo e sistemático das aplicações de segurança abordando projectos de investigação relacionados, estudam-se as tecnologias de comunicação sem fios disponíveis e a sua possibilidade de suportar aplicações de segurança rodoviária. Desta análise, conclui-se que a norma norte americana WAVE/IEEE802.11p e a europeia ETSI-G5, criadas especificamente para o efeito são as que mais se adequam à finalidade desejada. Considera-se que o cenário de utilização é evolutivo, podendo coexistirem veículos que não dispõem de sistemas de comunicação com outros que suportam a norma WAVE. Dado que o protocolo de acesso ao meio proposto pela norma WAVE não garante um acesso determinístico ao meio partilhado, propõe-se um novo protocolo, o Vehicular Flexible Time-Triggered protocol (VFTT). Faz-se a análise teórica da viabilidade do protocolo proposto para a norma WAVE e respectiva norma europeia (ETSI-G5). Quantifica-se o protocolo VFTT para um cenário real: a auto-estrada A5 Lisboa-Cascais, uma das autoestradas portuguesas mais movimentadas. Conclui-se que o protocolo é viável e garante um atraso restringido temporalmente

    Signals of Opportunity for Positioning Purposes

    O ver the last years, location-based services (LBS) have become popular due to the emergence of smartphones with capabilities of positioning their user’s location on Earth at unprecedented speed and convenience. Behind such feat are the technological advances in global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), such as Galileo, Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS), Global Positioning Service (GPS) and Beidou. The easiness of smartphones and the improvement of positioning technology has driven LBS to be at the core of many business models. Some of these business models rely on the user’s location to pick him up on a car, relinquish a meal to him, offer insights on sports performance, locate items to be picked up on a warehouse, among many others.While LBS are driving the need to continuously locate the user at higher degrees of accuracy and across any environment, be it in a city park, an urban canyon or inside a corporate office, some of these environments pose a challenge for GNSS. Indoor environments are particularly challenging for GNSS due to the attenuation and strong multipath imposed by walls and building materials. Such challenges and difficulties in signal acquisition have led to the development of solutions and technologies to improve positioning in indoor environments.While there are several commercial systems available to fulfill the needs of most LBS in indoor environments, most of these are not feasible to deploy at a global scale due to their infrastructure costs. Hence, several solutions have sought to build upon existing infrastructure to provide positioning information.Building upon existing infrastructure is what leads to the main topic of this thesis, the concept of signals of opportunity (SoO). A SoO is any wireless signal that can be exploited for a positioning purpose despite its initial design seeking to fulfill a different purpose. A few examples of these signals are IEEE 802.11 signals, commonly known as WiFi, Bluetooth, digital video broadcasting - terrestrial (DVB-T) and many of the cellular signals, such as long-term evolution (LTE), universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) and global mobile system (GSM).The goal of this thesis is to address various challenges related to SoO for positioning.     A unified approach to sparse signal processing

    A unified view of the area of sparse signal processing is presented in tutorial form by bringing together various fields in which the property of sparsity has been successfully exploited. For each of these fields, various algorithms and techniques, which have been developed to leverage sparsity, are described succinctly. The common potential benefits of significant reduction in sampling rate and processing manipulations through sparse signal processing are revealed. The key application domains of sparse signal processing are sampling, coding, spectral estimation, array processing, compo-nent analysis, and multipath channel estimation.
