    Provably Secure Decisions based on Potentially Malicious Information

    There are various security-critical decisions routinely made, on the basis of information provided by peers: routing messages, user reports, sensor data, navigational information, blockchain updates, etc. Jury theorems were proposed in sociology to make decisions based on information from peers, which assume peers may be mistaken with some probability. We focus on attackers in a system, which manifest as peers that strategically report fake information to manipulate decision making. We define the property of robustness: a lower bound probability of deciding correctly, regardless of what information attackers provide. When peers are independently selected, we propose an optimal, robust decision mechanism called Most Probable Realisation (MPR). When peer collusion affects source selection, we prove that generally it is NP-hard to find an optimal decision scheme. We propose multiple heuristic decision schemes that can achieve optimality for some collusion scenarios

    Cooperative end-edge-cloud computing and resource allocation for digital twin enabled 6G industrial IoT

    End-edge-cloud (EEC) collaborative computing is regarded as one of the most promising technologies for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). It offers effective solutions for managing computationally intensive and delay-sensitive tasks efficiently. Indeed, achieving intelligent manufacturing in the context of 6G networks requires the development of efficient resource scheduling schemes. However, improving the quality of service and resource management in the face of challenges like time-varying physical operating environments of IIoT, task heterogeneity, and the coupling of different resource types is undoubtedly a complex task. In this work, we propose a digital twin (DT) assisted EEC collaborative computing scheme, where DT is utilized to monitor the physical operating environment in real-time and determine the optimal strategy, and the potential deviation between the real values and DT estimates is also considered. We aim to minimize the system cost by optimizing device association, offloading mode, bandwidth allocation, and task split ratio. Our optimization is constrained by the maximum tolerable latency of the task while considering both latency and energy consumption. To solve the collaborative computation and resource allocation (CCRA) problem in the EEC, we propose an algorithm with DT based on Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG), where each user end (UE) in DT operates as an independent agent to determine the optimum offloading decision autonomously. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, which can significantly improve the task success rate compared to benchmark schemes, while reducing the latency and energy consumption of task offloading with the assistance of DT

    Progression Cognition Reinforcement Learning with Prioritized Experience for Multi-Vehicle Pursuit

    Multi-vehicle pursuit (MVP) such as autonomous police vehicles pursuing suspects is important but very challenging due to its mission and safety-critical nature. While multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithms have been proposed for MVP in structured grid-pattern roads, the existing algorithms use random training samples in centralized learning, which leads to homogeneous agents showing low collaboration performance. For the more challenging problem of pursuing multiple evaders, these algorithms typically select a fixed target evader for pursuers without considering dynamic traffic situation, which significantly reduces pursuing success rate. To address the above problems, this paper proposes a Progression Cognition Reinforcement Learning with Prioritized Experience for MVP (PEPCRL-MVP) in urban multi-intersection dynamic traffic scenes. PEPCRL-MVP uses a prioritization network to assess the transitions in the global experience replay buffer according to each MARL agent’s parameters. With the personalized and prioritized experience set selected via the prioritization network, diversity is introduced to the MARL learning process, which can improve collaboration and task-related performance. Furthermore, PEPCRL-MVP employs an attention module to extract critical features from dynamic urban traffic environments. These features are used to develop a progression cognition method to adaptively group pursuing vehicles. Each group efficiently targets one evading vehicle. Extensive experiments conducted with a simulator over unstructured roads of an urban area show that PEPCRL-MVP is superior to other state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, PEPCRL-MVP improves pursuing efficiency by 3.95 % over Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic policy gradient-Decentralized Multi-Agent Pursuit and its success rate is 34.78 % higher than that of Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient.     The AddACO: A bio-inspired modified version of the ant colony optimization algorithm to solve travel salesman problems

    The Travel Salesman Problem (TSP) consists in finding the minimal-length closed tour that connects the entire group of nodes of a given graph. We propose to solve such a combinatorial optimization problem with the AddACO algorithm: it is a version of the Ant Colony Optimization method that is characterized by a modified probabilistic law at the basis of the exploratory movement of the artificial insects. In particular, the ant decisional rule is here set to amount in a linear convex combination of competing behavioral stimuli and has therefore an additive form (hence the name of our algorithm), rather than the canonical multiplicative one. The AddACO intends to address two conceptual shortcomings that characterize classical ACO methods: (i) the population of artificial insects is in principle allowed to simultaneously minimize/maximize all migratory guidance cues (which is in implausible from a biological/ecological point of view) and (ii) a given edge of the graph has a null probability to be explored if at least one of the movement trait is therein equal to zero, i.e., regardless the intensity of the others (this in principle reduces the exploratory potential of the ant colony). Three possible variants of our method are then specified: the AddACO-V1, which includes pheromone trail and visibility as insect decisional variables, and the AddACO-V2 and the AddACO-V3, which in turn add random effects and inertia, respectively, to the two classical migratory stimuli. The three versions of our algorithm are tested on benchmark middle-scale TPS instances, in order to assess their performance and to find their optimal parameter setting. The best performing variant is finally applied to large-scale TSPs, compared to the naive Ant-Cycle Ant System, proposed by Dorigo and colleagues, and evaluated in terms of quality of the solutions, computational time, and convergence speed. The aim is in fact to show that the proposed transition probability, as long as its conceptual advantages, is competitive from a performance perspective, i.e., if it does not reduce the exploratory capacity of the ant population w.r.t. the canonical one (at least in the case of selected TSPs). A theoretical study of the asymptotic behavior of the AddACO is given in the appendix of the work, whose conclusive section contains some hints for further improvements of our algorithm, also in the perspective of its application to other optimization problems

    Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law

    This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI.     Climate Change and Critical Agrarian Studies

    Climate change is perhaps the greatest threat to humanity today and plays out as a cruel engine of myriad forms of injustice, violence and destruction. The effects of climate change from human-made emissions of greenhouse gases are devastating and accelerating; yet are uncertain and uneven both in terms of geography and socio-economic impacts. Emerging from the dynamics of capitalism since the industrial revolution — as well as industrialisation under state-led socialism — the consequences of climate change are especially profound for the countryside and its inhabitants. The book interrogates the narratives and strategies that frame climate change and examines the institutionalised responses in agrarian settings, highlighting what exclusions and inclusions result. It explores how different people — in relation to class and other co-constituted axes of social difference such as gender, race, ethnicity, age and occupation — are affected by climate change, as well as the climate adaptation and mitigation responses being implemented in rural areas. The book in turn explores how climate change – and the responses to it - affect processes of social differentiation, trajectories of accumulation and in turn agrarian politics. Finally, the book examines what strategies are required to confront climate change, and the underlying political-economic dynamics that cause it, reflecting on what this means for agrarian struggles across the world. The 26 chapters in this volume explore how the relationship between capitalism and climate change plays out in the rural world and, in particular, the way agrarian struggles connect with the huge challenge of climate change. Through a huge variety of case studies alongside more conceptual chapters, the book makes the often-missing connection between climate change and critical agrarian studies.     Counterexample Guided Abstraction Refinement with Non-Refined Abstractions for Multi-Agent Path Finding

    Counterexample guided abstraction refinement (CEGAR) represents a powerful symbolic technique for various tasks such as model checking and reachability analysis. Recently, CEGAR combined with Boolean satisfiability (SAT) has been applied for multi-agent path finding (MAPF), a problem where the task is to navigate agents from their start positions to given individual goal positions so that the agents do not collide with each other. The recent CEGAR approach used the initial abstraction of the MAPF problem where collisions between agents were omitted and were eliminated in subsequent abstraction refinements. We propose in this work a novel CEGAR-style solver for MAPF based on SAT in which some abstractions are deliberately left non-refined. This adds the necessity to post-process the answers obtained from the underlying SAT solver as these answers slightly differ from the correct MAPF solutions. Non-refining however yields order-of-magnitude smaller SAT encodings than those of the previous approach and speeds up the overall solving process making the SAT-based solver for MAPF competitive again in relevant benchmarks

    On the Stability of Gated Graph Neural Networks

    In this paper, we aim to find the conditions for input-state stability (ISS) and incremental input-state stability (δ\deltaISS) of Gated Graph Neural Networks (GGNNs). We show that this recurrent version of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) can be expressed as a dynamical distributed system and, as a consequence, can be analysed using model-based techniques to assess its stability and robustness properties. Then, the stability criteria found can be exploited as constraints during the training process to enforce the internal stability of the neural network. Two distributed control examples, flocking and multi-robot motion control, show that using these conditions increases the performance and robustness of the gated GNNs
