    Cloud computing resource scheduling and a survey of its evolutionary approaches

    A disruptive technology fundamentally transforming the way that computing services are delivered, cloud computing offers information and communication technology users a new dimension of convenience of resources, as services via the Internet. Because cloud provides a finite pool of virtualized on-demand resources, optimally scheduling them has become an essential and rewarding topic, where a trend of using Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms is emerging rapidly. Through analyzing the cloud computing architecture, this survey first presents taxonomy at two levels of scheduling cloud resources. It then paints a landscape of the scheduling problem and solutions. According to the taxonomy, a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art approaches is presented systematically. Looking forward, challenges and potential future research directions are investigated and invited, including real-time scheduling, adaptive dynamic scheduling, large-scale scheduling, multiobjective scheduling, and distributed and parallel scheduling. At the dawn of Industry 4.0, cloud computing scheduling for cyber-physical integration with the presence of big data is also discussed. Research in this area is only in its infancy, but with the rapid fusion of information and data technology, more exciting and agenda-setting topics are likely to emerge on the horizon

    A Coevolutionary Particle Swarm Algorithm for Bi-Level Variational Inequalities: Applications to Competition in Highway Transportation Networks

    A climate of increasing deregulation in traditional highway transportation, where the private sector has an expanded role in the provision of traditional transportation services, provides a background for practical policy issues to be investigated. One of the key issues of interest, and the focus of this chapter, would be the equilibrium decision variables offered by participants in this market. By assuming that the private sector participants play a Nash game, the above problem can be described as a Bi-Level Variational Inequality (BLVI). Our problem differs from the classical Cournot-Nash game because each and every player’s actions is constrained by another variational inequality describing the equilibrium route choice of users on the network. In this chapter, we discuss this BLVI and suggest a heuristic coevolutionary particle swarm algorithm for its resolution. Our proposed algorithm is subsequently tested on example problems drawn from the literature. The numerical experiments suggest that the proposed algorithm is a viable solution method for this problem

    A Parallel Divide-and-Conquer based Evolutionary Algorithm for Large-scale Optimization

    Large-scale optimization problems that involve thousands of decision variables have extensively arisen from various industrial areas. As a powerful optimization tool for many real-world applications, evolutionary algorithms (EAs) fail to solve the emerging large-scale problems both effectively and efficiently. In this paper, we propose a novel Divide-and-Conquer (DC) based EA that can not only produce high-quality solution by solving sub-problems separately, but also highly utilizes the power of parallel computing by solving the sub-problems simultaneously. Existing DC-based EAs that were deemed to enjoy the same advantages of the proposed algorithm, are shown to be practically incompatible with the parallel computing scheme, unless some trade-offs are made by compromising the solution quality.Comment: 12 pages, 0 figure

    Evidence of coevolution in multi-objective evolutionary algorithms

    This paper demonstrates that simple yet important characteristics of coevolution can occur in evolutionary algorithms when only a few conditions are met. We find that interaction-based fitness measurements such as fitness (linear) ranking allow for a form of coevolutionary dynamics that is observed when 1) changes are made in what solutions are able to interact during the ranking process and 2) evolution takes place in a multi-objective environment. This research contributes to the study of simulated evolution in a at least two ways. First, it establishes a broader relationship between coevolution and multi-objective optimization than has been previously considered in the literature. Second, it demonstrates that the preconditions for coevolutionary behavior are weaker than previously thought. In particular, our model indicates that direct cooperation or competition between species is not required for coevolution to take place. Moreover, our experiments provide evidence that environmental perturbations can drive coevolutionary processes; a conclusion that mirrors arguments put forth in dual phase evolution theory. In the discussion, we briefly consider how our results may shed light onto this and other recent theories of evolution

    Multiobjective Feature Selection of Microarray Data via Distributed Parallel Algorithms

    Many real-world problems are large scale and hence difficult to address. Due to the large number of features in microarray datasets, feature selection and classification are even more challenging. Although there are numerous features, not all features contribute to the classification, and some features are even impeditive. Through feature selection, a feature subset that contains only a small quantity of essential features is generated, which can increase the classification accuracy and significantly reduce the time consumption. In this paper, we construct a multiobjective feature selection model that simultaneously considers classification error, feature number and feature redundancy. For this model, we propose several distributed parallel algorithms through different encodings and an adaptive strategy. Additionally, to reduce the time consumption, various tactics are employed, including feature number constraint, distributed parallelism and sample-wise parallelism. For a batch of microarray datasets, the proposed algorithms are superior to several state-of-the-art multiobjective evolutionary algorithms in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency

    Distributed evolutionary algorithms and their models: A survey of the state-of-the-art

    The increasing complexity of real-world optimization problems raises new challenges to evolutionary computation. Responding to these challenges, distributed evolutionary computation has received considerable attention over the past decade. This article provides a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art distributed evolutionary algorithms and models, which have been classified into two groups according to their task division mechanism. Population-distributed models are presented with master-slave, island, cellular, hierarchical, and pool architectures, which parallelize an evolution task at population, individual, or operation levels. Dimension-distributed models include coevolution and multi-agent models, which focus on dimension reduction. Insights into the models, such as synchronization, homogeneity, communication, topology, speedup, advantages and disadvantages are also presented and discussed. The study of these models helps guide future development of different and/or improved algorithms. Also highlighted are recent hotspots in this area, including the cloud and MapReduce-based implementations, GPU and CUDA-based implementations, distributed evolutionary multiobjective optimization, and real-world applications. Further, a number of future research directions have been discussed, with a conclusion that the development of distributed evolutionary computation will continue to flourish

    Multi - objective cooperative neuro - evolution of recurrent neural networks for time series prediction

    Cooperative coevolution is an evolutionary computation method which solves a problem by decomposing it into smaller subcomponents. Multi-objective optimization deals with conflicting objectives and produces multiple optimal solutions instead of a single global optimal solution. In previous work, a multi-objective cooperative co-evolutionary method was introduced for training feedforward neural networks on time series problems. In this paper, the same method is used for training recurrent neural networks. The proposed approach is tested on time series problems in which the different time-lags represent the different objectives. Multiple pre-processed datasets distinguished by their time-lags are used for training and testing. This results in the discovery of a single neural network that can correctly give predictions for data pre-processed using different time-lags. The method is tested on several benchmark time series problems on which it gives a competitive performance in comparison to the methods in the literature
