    An adaptive extended fuzzy function state-observer based control with unknown control direction

    In this paper, a novel adaptive extended fuzzy function state observer based controller is proposed to control a class of unknown or uncertain nonlinear systems. The controller uses Nussbaum-gain technique from literature to prevent controller singularity with unknown control direction and the controller degree of freedom is increased. A state observer which employs the adaptive extended fuzzy function system to approximate a nonlinear system dynamics and estimates the unmeasurable state. The stability of closed-loop control system are shown using Lyapunov stability criterion and Nussbaum function property. The proposed and conventional fuzzy system based controllers are designed to control an inverted pendulum in simulation and a flexible-joint manipulator in real-time experiment. The integral of absoulte error (IAE) of tracking, integral of squared error (ISE) of tracking and integral of required absolute control signal (IA U) performances are compared in applications. The aim of the paper is not only to improve the tracking performances, but also to implement the adaptive extended fuzzy function based controller to a real-time system and conduct the tracking with unknown control direction

    Nonlinear Model-Based Control for Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

    Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a technology where skeletal muscles are externally stimulated by electrodes to help restore functionality to human limbs with motor neuron disorder. This dissertation is concerned with the model-based feedback control of the NMES quadriceps muscle group-knee joint dynamics. A class of nonlinear controllers is presented based on various levels of model structures and uncertainties. The two main control techniques used throughout this work are backstepping control and Lyapunov stability theory. In the first control strategy, we design a model-based nonlinear control law for the system with the exactly known passive mechanical that ensures asymptotical tracking. This first design is used as a stepping stone for the other control strategies in which we consider that uncertainties exist. In the next four control strategies, techniques for adaptive control of nonlinearly parameterized systems are applied to handle the unknown physical constant parameters that appear nonlinearly in the model. By exploiting the Lipschitzian nature or the concavity/convexity of the nonlinearly parameterized functions in the model, we design two adaptive controllers and two robust adaptive controllers that ensure practical tracking. The next set of controllers are based on a NMES model that includes the uncertain muscle contractile mechanics. In this case, neural network-based controllers are designed to deal with this uncertainty. We consider here voltage inputs without and with saturation. For the latter, the Nussbaum gain is applied to handle the input saturation. The last two control strategies are based on a more refined NMES model that accounts for the muscle activation dynamics. The main challenge here is that the activation state is unmeasurable. In the first design, we design a model-based observer that directly estimates the unmeasured state for a certain activation model. The second design introduces a nonlinear filter with an adaptive control law to handle parametric uncertainty in the activation dynamics. Both the observer- and filter-based, partial-state feedback controllers ensure asymptotical tracking. Throughout this dissertation, the performance of the proposed control schemes are illustrated via computer simulations

    Adaptive fault-tolerant attitude tracking control for hypersonic vehicle with unknown inertial matrix and states constraints

    This paper proposes an adaptive fault-tolerant control (FTC) method for hypersonic vehicle (HSV) with unexpected centroid shift, actuator fault, time-varying full state constraints, and input saturation. The occurrence of unexpected centroid shift has three main effects on the HSV system, which are system uncertainties, eccentric moments, and variation of input matrix. In order to ensure the time-varying state constraints, a novel attitude state constraint control strategy, to keep the safe flight of HSV, is technically proposed by a time-varying state constraint function (TVSCF). A unified controller is designed to handle the time-varying state constraints according to the proposed TVSCF. Then, the constrained HSV system can be transformed into a novel free-constrained system based on the TVSCF. For the variation of system input matrix, input saturation and actuator fault, a special Nussbaum-type function is designed to compensate for those time-varying nonlinear terms. Additionally, the auxiliary systems is designed to compensate the constraint of system control inputs. Then, it is proved that the proposed control scheme can guarantee the boundedness of all closed-loop signals based on the Lyapunov stability theory. At last, the simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant control scheme.</p

    NONLINEAR ADAPTIVE HEADING CONTROL FOR AN UNDERACTUATED SURFACE VESSEL WITH CONSTRAINED INPUT AND SIDESLIP ANGLE COMPENSATION

    In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive heading controller is developed for an underactuated surface vessel with constrained input and sideslip angle compensation. The controller design is accomplished in a framework of backstepping technique. First, to amend the irrationality of the traditional definition of the desired heading, the desired heading is compensated by the sideslip angle. Considering the actuator physical constrain, a hyperbolic tangent function and a Nussbaum function are introduced to handle the nonlinear part of control input. The error and the disturbance are estimated and compensated by an adaptive control law. In addition, to avoid the complicated calculation of time derivatives of the virtual control, the command filter is introduced to integrate with the control law. It is analysed by the Lyapunov theory that the closed loop system is guaranteed to be uniformly ultimately bounded stability. Finally, the simulation studies illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method

    Robust Control Methods for Nonlinear Systems with Uncertain Dynamics and Unknown Control Direction

    Robust nonlinear control design strategies using sliding mode control (SMC) and integral SMC (ISMC) are developed, which are capable of achieving reliable and accurate tracking control for systems containing dynamic uncertainty, unmodeled disturbances, and actuator anomalies that result in an unknown and time-varying control direction. In order to ease readability of this dissertation, detailed explanations of the relevant mathematical tools is provided, including stability denitions, Lyapunov-based stability analysis methods, SMC and ISMC fundamentals, and other basic nonlinear control tools. The contributions of the dissertation are three novel control algorithms for three different classes of nonlinear systems: single-input multipleoutput (SIMO) systems, systems with model uncertainty and bounded disturbances, and systems with unknown control direction. Control design for SIMO systems is challenging due to the fact that such systems have fewer actuators than degrees of freedom to control (i.e., they are underactuated systems). While traditional nonlinear control methods can be utilized to design controllers for certain classes of cascaded underactuated systems, more advanced methods are required to develop controllers for parallel systems, which are not in a cascade structure. A novel control technique is proposed in this dissertation, which is shown to achieve asymptotic tracking for dual parallel systems, where a single scalar control input directly affects two subsystems. The result is achieved through an innovative sequential control design algorithm, whereby one of the subsystems is indirectly stabilized via the desired state trajectory that is commanded to the other subsystem. The SIMO system under consideration does not contain uncertainty or disturbances. In dealing with systems containing uncertainty in the dynamic model, a particularly challenging situation occurs when uncertainty exists in the input-multiplicative gain matrix. Moreover, special consideration is required in control design for systems that also include unknown bounded disturbances. To cope with these challenges, a robust continuous controller is developed using an ISMC technique, which achieves asymptotic trajectory tracking for systems with unknown bounded disturbances, while simultaneously compensating for parametric uncertainty in the input gain matrix. The ISMC design is rigorously proven to achieve asymptotic trajectory tracking for a quadrotor system and a synthetic jet actuator (SJA)-based aircraft system. In the ISMC designs, it is assumed that the signs in the uncertain input-multiplicative gain matrix (i.e., the actuator control directions) are known. A much more challenging scenario is encountered in designing controllers for classes of systems, where the uncertainty in the input gain matrix is extreme enough to result in an a priori-unknown control direction. Such a scenario can result when dealing with highly inaccurate dynamic models, unmodeled parameter variations, actuator anomalies, unknown external or internal disturbances, and/or other adversarial operating conditions. To address this challenge, a SMCbased self-recongurable control algorithm is presented, which automatically adjusts for unknown control direction via periodic switching between sliding manifolds that ultimately forces the state to a converging manifold. Rigorous mathematical analyses are presented to prove the theoretical results, and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the three proposed control algorithms

    Fault-tolerant neuro adaptive constrained control of wind turbines for power regulation with uncertain wind speed variation

    This paper presents a novel adaptive fault-tolerant neural-based control design for wind turbines with an unknown dynamic and unknown wind speed. By utilizing the barrier Lyapunov function in the analysis of the Lyapunov direct method, the constrained behavior of the system is provided in which the rotor speed, its variation, and generated power remain in the desired bounds. In addition, input saturation is also considered in terms of smooth pitch actuator bounding. Furthermore, by utilizing a Nussbaum-type function in designing the control algorithm, the unpredictable wind speed variation is captured without requiring accurate wind speed measurement, observation, or estimation. Moreover, with the proposed adaptive analytic algorithms, together with the use of radial basis function neural networks, a robust, adaptive, and fault-tolerant control scheme is developed without the need for precise information about the wind turbine model nor the pitch actuator faults. Additionally, the computational cost of the resultant control law is reduced by utilizing a dynamic surface control technique. The effectiveness of the developed design is verified using theoretical analysis tools and illustrated by numerical simulations on a high-fidelity wind turbine benchmark model with different fault scenarios. Comparison of the achieved results to the ones that can be obtained via an available industrial controller shows the advantages of the proposed scheme

    In 2015, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fuzzy Sets, ten years after the main milestones regarding its applications in fuzzy control in their 40th birthday were reviewed in FSS, see [1]. Ten years is at the same time a long period and short time thinking to the inner dynamics of research. This paper, presented for these 50 years of Fuzzy Sets is taking into account both thoughts. A first part presents a quick recap of the history of fuzzy control: from model-free design, based on human reasoning to quasi-LPV (Linear Parameter Varying) model-based control design via some milestones, and key applications. The second part shows where we arrived and what the improvements are since the milestone of the first 40 years.     Nowadays, analyzing different control systems is a must for virtually all types of modern industries and factories. Analyzing these control systems allows optimizing and streamlining processes, which in many cases are carried out manually, leading to large errors, delays and costly processes. Continuous-time adaptive control of nonlinear systems has been an area of increasing research activity [1] and globally, regulation and tracking results have been obtained for several types of nonlinear systems [2]. However, the adaptive technique is gradually becoming more dynamic after 25 years of research and experimentation. Important theoretical results on stability and structure have been established. There is still much theoretical work to be done [3]. On the other hand, adaptive control in discrete-time nonlinear systems has received much less attention, in part because of the difficulties associated with the sampled data of nonlinear systems [2]. Thus, it is in some theories where adaptive control laws are implemented admitting the intervening nonlinearities in the real system [4] where investigations about the regulation of the system are created. The purpose of this is to implement a very simple adaptive control law and to check the convergence of the closed loop.&nbsp; However, Zhongsheng Hou, author of several well-regarded papers proposes a model-free adaptive control approach for a class of discrete-time nonlinear SISO systems with a systematic framework [5]-[6]
