    Foreword: The Seventh Issue of The Doctoral Research Abstracts captures the novelty of 65 doctorates receiving their scrolls in UiTM’s 82nd Convocation in the field of Science and Technology, Business and Administration, and Social Science and Humanities. To the recipients I would like to say that you have most certainly done UiTM proud by journeying through the scholastic path with its endless challenges and impediments, and persevering right till the very end. This convocation should not be regarded as the end of your highest scholarly achievement and contribution to the body of knowledge but rather as the beginning of embarking into high impact innovative research for the community and country from knowledge gained during this academic journey. As alumni of UiTM, we will always hold you dear to our hearts. A new ‘handshake’ is about to take place between you and UiTM as joint collaborators in future research undertakings. I envisioned a strong research pact between you as our alumni and UiTM in breaking the frontier of knowledge through research.     Exact Gradients Improve Parameter Estimation in Nonlinear Mixed Effects Models with Stochastic Dynamics

    Nonlinear mixed effects (NLME) modeling based on stochastic differential equations (SDEs) have evolved into a promising approach for analysis of PK/PD data. SDE-NLME models go beyond the realm of standard population modeling as they consider stochastic dynamics, thereby introducing a probabilistic perspective on the state variables. This article presents a summary of the main contributions to SDE-NLME models found in the literature. The aims of this work were to develop an exact gradient version of the first-order conditional estimation (FOCE) method for SDE-NLME models and to investigate whether it enabled faster estimation and better gradient precision/accuracy compared to the use of gradients approximated by finite differences. A simulation-estimation study was set up whereby finite difference approximations of the gradients of each level were interchanged with the exact gradients. Following previous work, the uncertainty of the state variables was accounted for using the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The exact gradient FOCE method was implemented in Mathematica 11 and evaluated on SDE versions of three common PK/PD models. When finite difference gradients were replaced by exact gradients at both FOCE levels, relative runtimes improved between 6- and 32-fold, depending on model complexity. Additionally, gradient precision/accuracy was significantly better in the exact gradient case. We conclude that parameter estimation using FOCE with exact gradients can successfully be applied to SDE-NLME models

    Bioprocess Systems Engineering Applications in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

    Biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical manufacturing are strongly influenced by the process analytical technology initiative (PAT) and quality by design (QbD) methodologies, which are designed to enhance the understanding of more integrated processes. The major aim of this effort can be summarized as developing a mechanistic understanding of a wide range of process steps, including the development of technologies to perform online measurements and real-time control and optimization. Furthermore, minimization of the number of empirical experiments and the model-assisted exploration of the process design space are targeted. Even if tremendous progress has been achieved so far, there is still work to be carried out in order to realize the full potential of the process systems engineering toolbox. Within this reprint, an overview of cutting-edge developments of process systems engineering for biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes is given, including model-based process design, Digital Twins, computer-aided process understanding, process development and optimization, and monitoring and control of bioprocesses. The biopharmaceutical processes addressed focus on the manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals, mainly by Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, as well as adeno-associated virus production and generation of cell spheroids for cell therapies

    Evaluation of the impact of engineered nanoparticles on the operation of wastewater treatment plant

    The effect of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) mixture consisting of silver oxide, (Agg0[Silver Oxide Nanopartical], 20 nm), titanium dioxide, (TiO2[Titanium dioxide], 30-40 nm) and zinc oxide, (ZnO, 20 nm) compared with their bulk metal salts was evaluated against unspiked activated sludge (control) using 3 parallel pilot-scale treatment plants. The total concentration of the ionic species of Ag+ Ti[Silver + Titanium] and Zn(2+) in the effluent of the ENP spiked activated sludge (AS) was below limits of detection and> 99% of the spiked ENP were found in the waste activated sludge (WAS), whereas 39 – 58 % of Ag0[Silver Oxide Nanopartical], 51 – 63 % and 58 – 74 % of ZnO ion concentrations were recovered in the anaerobic digestate (AD) cake suggesting higher affinity of ENPs to WAS than to anaerobic digestate. ENPs induced a 2-fold increase of the microbial community specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) compared with the control and > 98 % of ammonia and 80 % of COD were removed from the AS suggesting that the heterotrophic biomass retained their ability to nitrify and degrade organic matter at the spiked ENP concentration. The floc size and cultivable microbial abundance was reduced in the ENP spiked AS with no apparent disruption of the overall AS process efficiency. However, scanning electron microscopic analysis clearly showed damage to specific microbial cells. The lipid fingerprint and 16S rRNA gene-based pyrosequencing evidenced the dominance of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteriodetes with a clear temporal shift in microbial community structure. The prominent nano-tolerant bacterial species identified were Acidovorax, Rhodoferax, and Comamonas whereas Methanocorpusculum and Methanosarcina were recovered in AS and were the dominant Archaea in the AD with 99 and 98 % similarities to the closest culturable relative. Their presence in the AS suggests tolerance to ENPs and oxygen-dependent respiration. V. fisheri activity was not sensitive to the ionic concentrations of the ENP or metal salt mixture in the digestate samples and illustrates the need to develop bioassay using indigenous wastewater microorganisms to detect the potential effect of ENP. Overall, unlike other xenobiotic compounds, ENPs can hasten the natural selection of microbial species in activated sludge and anaerobic digestion processes

In this 5th edition of the electronic conference, contributors were invited to provide papers and presentations from the field of sensors and applications at large, resulting in a wide variety of excellent submissions and topic areas. Papers which attracted the most interest on the web or that provided a particularly innovative contribution were selected for publication in this collection. These peer-reviewed papers are published with the aim of rapid and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications. We hope this conference series will grow rapidly in the future and become recognized as a new way and venue by which to (electronically) present new developments related to the field of sensors and their applications
