    A statistical approach to the zonation of a petroleum reservoir

    The problem of dividing a reservoir into distinct permeability zones, in order to predict fluid flow and thereby the production history of the field, has long troubled the petroleum engineer. As a solution to this problem a new statistical method for zoning a reservoir was developed, using a modification of the analysis of variance technique. The application of the statistical zonation procedure to permeability data obtained from eight closely spaced wells substantiated the validity and effectiveness of the new method in determining distinct permeability zones --Abstract, page iii

    A primer on the conditional mediation analysis in PLS-SEM

    Conditional mediation (CoMe) analysis integrates mediation and moderation analyses to examine and test hypotheses about how mediated relationships vary as a function of context, boundaries, or individual differences. Although CoMe analysis can be a crucial element of empirical studies that seek to advance theory in information systems, applications of such analysis are scarce, in general, and in partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), in particular. This paper clarifies conceptual fundamentals of and develops guidelines for CoMe analysis within the PLS-SEM context. Furthermore, the paper outlines the illustrative use of CoMe analysis in PLS SEM and presents detailed step-by-step procedures to do so in the PLS-SEM setting. Overall, this paper provides researchers and practitioners with the required knowledge to properly carry out, report, and interpret CoMe analysis in PLS-SEM

    Assessment of Buffet Forcing Function Development Process Using Unsteady Pressure Sensitive Paint

    A wind tunnel test was conducted at the Ames Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel to characterize the transonic buffet environment of a generic launch vehicle forebody. The test examined a highly instrumented version of the Coe and Nute Model 11 test article first tested in the 1960s. One of the measurement techniques used during this test was unsteady pressure sensitive paint (uPSP) developed at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex. This optical measurement technique measured fluctuating pressures at over 300,000 locations on the surface of the model. The high spatial density of these measurements provided an opportunity to examine in depth the assumptions underpinning the development of buffet forcing functions (BFFs) used in the development of the Space Launch System vehicle. The comparison of discrete-measurement-based BFFs to BFFs developed by continuous surface pressure integration indicates that the current BFF development approach under predicts low frequency content of the BFFs while over predicting high frequency content. Coherence-based adjustments employed to reduce over prediction in the surface integration of discrete pressure measurements contribute to the inaccuracy of the BFFs and their implementation should be reevaluated

    Conflating Abstraction with Empirical Observation: The False Mind-Matter Dichotomy

    \u3e Context • The alleged dichotomy between mind and matter is pervasive. Therefore, the attempt to explain mat- ter in terms of mind (idealism) is often considered a mirror image of that of explaining mind in terms of mat- ter (mainstream physicalism), in the sense of being structurally equivalent despite being reversely arranged. \u3e Problem • I argue that this is an error arising from language artifacts, for dichotomies must reside in the same level of abstraction. \u3e Method • I show that, because matter outside mind is not an empirical observation but rather an explanatory model, the epistemic symmetry between the two is broken. Consequently, matter and mind cannot reside in the same level of abstraction. \u3e Results • It then becomes clear that attempting to explain mind in terms of matter is epistemically more costly than attempting to explain matter in terms of mind. \u3e Implications • The qualities of experience are suggested to be not only epistemically, but also ontologically primary. \u3e Constructivist content • I high- light the primacy of perceptual constructs over explanatory abstraction on both epistemic and ontic levels. \u3e Key words • Idealism, physicalism, pancomputationalism, anti-realism, hard problem of consciousness, epistemic symmetry, explanatory abstraction, levels of abstraction

    Increasing the Accuracy and Optimizing the Structure of the Scale Thickness Detection System by Extracting the Optimal Characteristics Using Wavelet Transform

    Loss of energy, decrement of efficiency, and decrement of the effective diameter of the oil pipe are among the consequences of scale inside oil condensate transfer pipes. To prevent these incidents and their consequences and take timely action, it is important to detect the amount of scale. One of the accurate diagnosis methods is the use of non-invasive systems based on gamma-ray attenuation. The detection method proposed in this research consists of a detector that receives the radiation sent by the gamma source with dual energy (radioisotopes 241 Am and 133 Ba) after passing through the test pipe with inner scale (in different thicknesses). This structure was simulated by Monte Carlo N Particle code. The simulation performed in the test pipe included a three-phase flow consisting of water, gas, and oil in a stratified flow regime in different volume percentages. The signals received by the detector were processed by wavelet transform, which provided sufficient inputs to design the radial basis function (RBF) neural network. The scale thickness value deposited in the pipe can be predicted with an MSE of 0.02. The use of a detector optimizes the structure, and its high accuracy guarantees the usefulness of its use in practical situations

    Despite the overwhelming advantages of using an IT project management methodology, organizations are rarely able to motivate their staff to use them. While empirical research states that the usefulness of a methodology is the single most important determinant of its acceptance and use by actual users, studies have not examined which aspects of usefulness are more important for which type of people in which situations. Our study is a step toward filling the gap in methodology evaluation, development, and adoption literature, which to date has not developed a theoretically and practically complete as well as relevant typology of the usefulness of a methodology and has also not studied the effect of personal traits such as needs. Based on needs and expectancy theories, we develop a conceptual model that holds that individual needs and contextual factors such as gender and age determine which aspect of the usefulness of a methodology has a bigger effect on individuals’ intentions to actually use the methodology
