The reasons behind the absence of a comprehensive Shariah Governance Framework of Islamic banks in Bangladesh
Purpose: The main objective of the study is to examine the reasons behind the absence of a comprehensive Shariah Governance Framework (SGF) of Islamic banks in Bangladesh. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study has covered 17 respondents through semistructured interviews from the Islamic banks and the Central Bank of Bangladesh with a combination of Shariah supervisory board members, Shariah department executives, Central Bank executives, and banking experts. Findings: Based on findings, this study outlines that the knowledge gap of management, unqualified Shariah supervisory boards members, executives in Central Bank and Islamic banks, and intention of the regulators, policymakers, Shariah experts, government executives, Islamic bankers, Board of directors, stakeholders and civil societies are responsible for the absence of a comprehensive SGF. Practical Implications: The study has significantly contributed to the national regulators, government, and the Central Bank of Bangladesh on the subject for developing a comprehensive Shariah Governance Framework. Originality/Value: The study highlights the reasons for the absence of a comprehensive Shariah Governance Framework which was unexplored for more than 30 years.peer-reviewe
A Comprehensive Evaluation Framework for Mental Health Consumer/Survivor Organizations: Values, Conceptualization, Design, and Action
This article provides a framework for the evaluation of mental health consumer/ survivor organizations that consists of four main components: (a) participatory processes, (b) conceptualization of the activities and outcomes at the individual and systems levels of these organizations, (c) the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods for examining activities and outcomes, and (d) dissemination and action. We assert that these components form a comprehensive and holistic framework for evaluating mental health consumer/survivor organizations; we illustrate how these components can be put into action through a case study of four mental health consumer/survivor organizations in Ontario; and we reflect on the lessons that we have learned in conducting this evaluation
Neutrino Oscillations in a Supersymmetric SO(10) Model with Type-III See-Saw Mechanism
The neutrino oscillations are studied in the framework of the minimal
supersymmetric SO(10) model with Type-III see-saw mechanism by additionally
introducing a number of SO(10) singlet neutrinos. The light Majorana neutrino
mass matrix is given by a combination of those of the singlet neutrinos and the
active neutrinos. The minimal SO(10) model gives an unambiguous Dirac
neutrino mass matrix, which enables us to predict the masses and the other
parameters for the singlet neutrinos. These predicted masses take the values
accessible and testable by near future collider experiments under the
reasonable assumptions. More comprehensive calculations on these parameters are
also given.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures; the version to appear in JHE
Learning how to understand complexity and deal with sustainability challenges : A framework for a comprehensive approach and its application in university education
Sustainability challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, poverty and rapid urbanization are complex and strongly interrelated. In order to successfully deal with these challenges, we need comprehensive approaches that integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines and perspectives and emphasize interconnections. In short, they aid in observing matters in a wider perspective without losing an understanding of the details. In order to teach and learn a comprehensive approach, we need to better understand what comprehensive thinking actually is. In this paper, we present a conceptual framework for a comprehensive approach, termed the GHH framework. The framework comprises three dimensions: generalism, holism, and holarchism. It contributes to the academic community's understanding of comprehensive thinking and it can be used for integrating comprehensive thinking into education. Also, practical examples of the application of the framework in university teaching are presented. We argue that an ideal approach to sustainability challenges and complexity in general is a balanced, dialectical combination of comprehensive and differentiative approaches. The current dominance of specialization, or the differentiative approach, in university education calls for a stronger emphasis on comprehensive thinking skills. Comprehensiveness should not be considered as a flawed approach, but should instead be considered as important an aspect in education as specialized and differentiative skills. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. User equilibrium, system optimum, and externalities in time-dependent road networks
This paper develops a comprehensive framework for analysing and calculating user equilibrium,
system optimum, and externalities in time-dependent road networks. Under dynamic user
equilibrium, traffic is assigned such that for each origin-destination pair in the network, the
individual travel costs experienced by each traveller, no matter which combination of travel route
and departure time he/she chooses, are equal and minimal. The system optimal flow is
determined by solving a state-dependent optimal control problem, which assigns traffic such that
the total system cost of the network system is minimized. The externalities are derived by using a
novel sensitivity analysis. The analyses developed in this paper can work with general travel cost
functions. Numerical examples are provided for illustration and discussion. Finally, some
concluding remarks are given
Internal Chronotopic Genre Structures : The Nineteenth-Century Historical Novel in the Context of the Belgian Literary Polysystem
One of the most fundamental problems of systemic approaches to literature is the question of how systemic principles might be translated into a manageable methodological framework. This contribution proposes that a combination of functionalistsystemic theories (in casu Itamar Even-Zohar’s Polysystem theory – especially the textually oriented versions – and the prototypical genre approach proposed by Dirk De Geest and Hendrik Van Gorp 1999) with Mikhail Bakhtin’s chronotope theory shows great promise in this respect. Since I am primarily interested in literary genres, the prototypical genre approach assumes a central position in my theoretical framework. My main argument is that Bakhtin’s chronotope concept offers interesting perspectives as a heuristic tool within a functionalist-systemic approach to genre studies, enabling the study not only of the constitutive elements of genre systems, but also of their mutual relations. Bakhtin’s own vague definitions of the concept somewhat hamper the process of putting it into practice for this purpose, but with the aid of the distinction between generic and motivic chronotopes, that problem can be solved. A detailed, comprehensive account of the theoretical premises underlying my proposal can be found in Bemong (under review); here I restrict myself to the basics
