    Memory Hierarchy Hardware-Software Co-design in Embedded Systems

    The memory hierarchy is the main bottleneck in modern computer systems as the gap between the speed of the processor and the memory continues to grow larger. The situation in embedded systems is even worse. The memory hierarchy consumes a large amount of chip area and energy, which are precious resources in embedded systems. Moreover, embedded systems have multiple design objectives such as performance, energy consumption, and area, etc. Customizing the memory hierarchy for specific applications is a very important way to take full advantage of limited resources to maximize the performance. However, the traditional custom memory hierarchy design methodologies are phase-ordered. They separate the application optimization from the memory hierarchy architecture design, which tend to result in local-optimal solutions. In traditional Hardware-Software co-design methodologies, much of the work has focused on utilizing reconfigurable logic to partition the computation. However, utilizing reconfigurable logic to perform the memory hierarchy design is seldom addressed. In this paper, we propose a new framework for designing memory hierarchy for embedded systems. The framework will take advantage of the flexible reconfigurable logic to customize the memory hierarchy for specific applications. It combines the application optimization and memory hierarchy design together to obtain a global-optimal solution.     Compiler and Runtime for Memory Management on Software Managed Manycore Processors

    abstract: We are expecting hundreds of cores per chip in the near future. However, scaling the memory architecture in manycore architectures becomes a major challenge. Cache coherence provides a single image of memory at any time in execution to all the cores, yet coherent cache architectures are believed will not scale to hundreds and thousands of cores. In addition, caches and coherence logic already take 20-50% of the total power consumption of the processor and 30-60% of die area. Therefore, a more scalable architecture is needed for manycore architectures. Software Managed Manycore (SMM) architectures emerge as a solution. They have scalable memory design in which each core has direct access to only its local scratchpad memory, and any data transfers to/from other memories must be done explicitly in the application using Direct Memory Access (DMA) commands. Lack of automatic memory management in the hardware makes such architectures extremely power-efficient, but they also become difficult to program. If the code/data of the task mapped onto a core cannot fit in the local scratchpad memory, then DMA calls must be added to bring in the code/data before it is required, and it may need to be evicted after its use. However, doing this adds a lot of complexity to the programmer's job. Now programmers must worry about data management, on top of worrying about the functional correctness of the program - which is already quite complex. This dissertation presents a comprehensive compiler and runtime integration to automatically manage the code and data of each task in the limited local memory of the core. We firstly developed a Complete Circular Stack Management. It manages stack frames between the local memory and the main memory, and addresses the stack pointer problem as well. Though it works, we found we could further optimize the management for most cases. Thus a Smart Stack Data Management (SSDM) is provided. In this work, we formulate the stack data management problem and propose a greedy algorithm for the same. Later on, we propose a general cost estimation algorithm, based on which CMSM heuristic for code mapping problem is developed. Finally, heap data is dynamic in nature and therefore it is hard to manage it. We provide two schemes to manage unlimited amount of heap data in constant sized region in the local memory.     Scratchpad Management in Software Managed Manycore Architectures

    abstract: Caches have long been used to reduce memory access latency. However, the increased complexity of cache coherence brings significant challenges in processor design as the number of cores increases. While making caches scalable is still an important research problem, some researchers are exploring the possibility of a more power-efficient SRAM called scratchpad memories or SPMs. SPMs consume significantly less area, and are more energy-efficient per access than caches, and therefore make the design of on-chip memories much simpler. Unlike caches, which fetch data from memories automatically, an SPM requires explicit instructions for data transfers. SPM-only architectures are thus named as software managed manycore (SMM), since the data movements of such architectures rely on software. SMM processors have been widely used in different areas, such as embedded computing, network processing, or even high performance computing. While SMM processors provide a low-power platform, the hardware alone does not guarantee power efficiency, if applications on such processors deliver low performance. Efficient software techniques are therefore required. A big body of management techniques for SMM architectures are compiler-directed, as inserting data movement operations by hand forces programmers to trace flow of data, which can be error-prone and sometimes difficult if not impossible. This thesis develops compiler-directed techniques to manage data transfers for embedded applications on SMMs efficiently. The techniques analyze and find out the proper program points and insert data movement instructions accordingly. The techniques manage code, stack and heap data of applications, and reduce execution time by 14%, 52% and 80% respectively compared to their predecessors on typical embedded applications. On top of managing local data, a technique is also developed for shared data in SMM architectures.     Exploring Processor and Memory Architectures for Multimedia

    Multimedia has become one of the cornerstones of our 21st century society and, when combined with mobility, has enabled a tremendous evolution of our society. However, joining these two concepts introduces many technical challenges. These range from having sufficient performance for handling multimedia content to having the battery stamina for acceptable mobile usage. When taking a projection of where we are heading, we see these issues becoming ever more challenging by increased mobility as well as advancements in multimedia content, such as introduction of stereoscopic 3D and augmented reality. The increased performance needs for handling multimedia come not only from an ongoing step-up in resolution going from QVGA (320x240) to Full HD (1920x1080) a 27x increase in less than half a decade. On top of this, there is also codec evolution (MPEG-2 to H.264 AVC) that adds to the computational load increase. To meet these performance challenges there has been processing and memory architecture advances (SIMD, out-of-order superscalarity, multicore processing and heterogeneous multilevel memories) in the mobile domain, in conjunction with ever increasing operating frequencies (200MHz to 2GHz) and on-chip memory sizes (128KB to 2-3MB). At the same time there is an increase in requirements for mobility, placing higher demands on battery-powered systems despite the steady increase in battery capacity (500 to 2000mAh). This leaves negative net result in-terms of battery capacity versus performance advances. In order to make optimal use of these architectural advances and to meet the power limitations in mobile systems, there is a need for taking an overall approach on how to best utilize these systems. The right trade-off between performance and power is crucial. On top of these constraints, the flexibility aspects of the system need to be addressed. All this makes it very important to reach the right architectural balance in the system. The first goal for this thesis is to examine multimedia applications and propose a flexible solution that can meet the architectural requirements in a mobile system. Secondly, propose an automated methodology of optimally mapping multimedia data and instructions to a heterogeneous multilevel memory subsystem. The proposed methodology uses constraint programming for solving a multidimensional optimization problem. Results from this work indicate that using today’s most advanced mobile processor technology together with a multi-level heterogeneous on-chip memory subsystem can meet the performance requirements for handling multimedia. By utilizing the automated optimal memory mapping method presented in this thesis lower total power consumption can be achieved, whilst performance for multimedia applications is improved, by employing enhanced memory management. This is achieved through reduced external accesses and better reuse of memory objects. This automatic method shows high accuracy, up to 90%, for predicting multimedia memory accesses for a given architecture

    Optimizing Heap Data Management on Software Managed Manycore Architectures

    abstract: Caches pose a serious limitation in scaling many-core architectures since the demand of area and power for maintaining cache coherence increases rapidly with the number of cores. Scratch-Pad Memories (SPMs) provide a cheaper and lower power alternative that can be used to build a more scalable many-core architecture. The trade-off of substituting SPMs for caches is however that the data must be explicitly managed in software. Heap management on SPM poses a major challenge due to the highly dynamic nature of of heap data access. Most existing heap management techniques implement a software caching scheme on SPM, emulating the behavior of hardware caches. The state-of-the-art heap management scheme implements a 4-way set-associative software cache on SPM for a single program running with one thread on one core. While the technique works correctly, it suffers from signifcant performance overhead. This paper presents a series of compiler-based efficient heap management approaches that reduces heap management overhead through several optimization techniques. Experimental results on benchmarks from MiBenchGuthaus et al. (2001) executed on an SMM processor modeled in gem5Binkert et al. (2011) demonstrate that our approach (implemented in llvm v3.8Lattner and Adve (2004)) can improve execution time by 80% on average compared to the previous state-of-the-art.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Computer Science 201

    A Dynamic Scratchpad Memory Unit for Predictable Real-Time Embedded Systems

    Scratch-pad memory is a popular alternative to caches in real-time embedded systems due to its advantages in terms of timing predictability and power consumption. However, dynamic management of scratch-pad content is challenging in multitasking environments. To address this issue, this thesis proposes the design of a novel Real-Time Scratchpad Memory Unit (RSMU). The RSMU can be integrated into existing systems with minimal architectural modi cations. Furthermore, scratchpad management is performed at the OS level, requiring no application changes. In conjunction with a two-level scheduling scheme, the RSMU provides strong timing guarantees to critical tasks.     Heap Data Allocation to Scratch-Pad Memory in Embedded Systems

    This thesis presents the first-ever compile-time method for allocating a portion of a program's dynamic data to scratch-pad memory. A scratch-pad is a fast directly addressed compiler-managed SRAM memory that replaces the hardware-managed cache. It is motivated by its better real-time guarantees vs cache and by its significantly lower overheads in access time, energy consumption, area and overall runtime. Dynamic data refers to all objects allocated at run-time in a program, as opposed to static data objects which are allocated at compile-time. Existing compiler methods for allocating data to scratch-pad are able to place only code, global and stack data (static data) in scratch-pad memory; heap and recursive-function objects(dynamic data) are allocated entirely in DRAM, resulting in poor performance for these dynamic data types. Runtime methods based on software caching can place data in scratch-pad, but because of their high overheads from software address translation, they have not been successful, especially for dynamic data. In this thesis we present a dynamic yet compiler-directed allocation method for dynamic data that for the first time, (i) is able to place a portion of the dynamic data in scratch-pad; (ii) has no software-caching tags; (iii) requires no run-time per-access extra address translation; and (iv) is able to move dynamic data back and forth between scratch-pad and DRAM to better track the program's locality characteristics. With our method, code, global, stack and heap variables can share the same scratch-pad. When compared to placing all dynamic data variables in DRAM and only static data in scratch-pad, our results show that our method reduces the average runtime of our benchmarks by 22.3%, and the average power consumption by 26.7%, for the same size of scratch-pad fixed at 5% of total data size. Significant savings in runtime and energy across a large number of benchmarks were also observed when compared against cache memory organizations, showing our method's success under constrained SRAM sizes when dealing with dynamic data. Lastly, our method is able to minimize the profile dependence issues which plague all similar allocation methods through careful analysis of static and dynamic profile information

    PYDAC: A DISTRIBUTED RUNTIME SYSTEM AND PROGRAMMING MODEL FOR A HETEROGENEOUS MANY-CORE ARCHITECTURE

    Heterogeneous many-core architectures that consist of big, fast cores and small, energy-efficient cores are very promising for future high-performance computing (HPC) systems. These architectures offer a good balance between single-threaded perfor- mance and multithreaded throughput. Such systems impose challenges on the design of programming model and runtime system. Specifically, these challenges include (a) how to fully utilize the chip’s performance, (b) how to manage heterogeneous, un- reliable hardware resources, and (c) how to generate and manage a large amount of parallel tasks. This dissertation proposes and evaluates a Python-based programming framework called PyDac. PyDac supports a two-level programming model. At the high level, a programmer creates a very large number of tasks, using the divide-and-conquer strategy. At the low level, tasks are written in imperative programming style. The runtime system seamlessly manages the parallel tasks, system resilience, and inter- task communication with architecture support. PyDac has been implemented on both an field-programmable gate array (FPGA) emulation of an unconventional het- erogeneous architecture and a conventional multicore microprocessor. To evaluate the performance, resilience, and programmability of the proposed system, several micro-benchmarks were developed. We found that (a) the PyDac abstracts away task communication and achieves programmability, (b) the micro-benchmarks are scalable on the hardware prototype, but (predictably) serial operation limits some micro-benchmarks, and (c) the degree of protection versus speed could be varied in redundant threading that is transparent to programmers
