    An advanced deep learning models-based plant disease detection: A review of recent research

    Plants play a crucial role in supplying food globally. Various environmental factors lead to plant diseases which results in significant production losses. However, manual detection of plant diseases is a time-consuming and error-prone process. It can be an unreliable method of identifying and preventing the spread of plant diseases. Adopting advanced technologies such as Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) can help to overcome these challenges by enabling early identification of plant diseases. In this paper, the recent advancements in the use of ML and DL techniques for the identification of plant diseases are explored. The research focuses on publications between 2015 and 2022, and the experiments discussed in this study demonstrate the effectiveness of using these techniques in improving the accuracy and efficiency of plant disease detection. This study also addresses the challenges and limitations associated with using ML and DL for plant disease identification, such as issues with data availability, imaging quality, and the differentiation between healthy and diseased plants. The research provides valuable insights for plant disease detection researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals by offering solutions to these challenges and limitations, providing a comprehensive understanding of the current state of research in this field, highlighting the benefits and limitations of these methods, and proposing potential solutions to overcome the challenges of their implementation

    Meso-scale FDM material layout design strategies under manufacturability constraints and fracture conditions

    In the manufacturability-driven design (MDD) perspective, manufacturability of the product or system is the most important of the design requirements. In addition to being able to ensure that complex designs (e.g., topology optimization) are manufacturable with a given process or process family, MDD also helps mechanical designers to take advantage of unique process-material effects generated during manufacturing. One of the most recognizable examples of this comes from the scanning-type family of additive manufacturing (AM) processes; the most notable and familiar member of this family is the fused deposition modeling (FDM) or fused filament fabrication (FFF) process. This process works by selectively depositing uniform, approximately isotropic beads or elements of molten thermoplastic material (typically structural engineering plastics) in a series of pre-specified traces to build each layer of the part. There are many interesting 2-D and 3-D mechanical design problems that can be explored by designing the layout of these elements. The resulting structured, hierarchical material (which is both manufacturable and customized layer-by-layer within the limits of the process and material) can be defined as a manufacturing process-driven structured material (MPDSM). This dissertation explores several practical methods for designing these element layouts for 2-D and 3-D meso-scale mechanical problems, focusing ultimately on design-for-fracture. Three different fracture conditions are explored: (1) cases where a crack must be prevented or stopped, (2) cases where the crack must be encouraged or accelerated, and (3) cases where cracks must grow in a simple pre-determined pattern. Several new design tools, including a mapping method for the FDM manufacturability constraints, three major literature reviews, the collection, organization, and analysis of several large (qualitative and quantitative) multi-scale datasets on the fracture behavior of FDM-processed materials, some new experimental equipment, and the refinement of a fast and simple g-code generator based on commercially-available software, were developed and refined to support the design of MPDSMs under fracture conditions. The refined design method and rules were experimentally validated using a series of case studies (involving both design and physical testing of the designs) at the end of the dissertation.     The Efficiency of an Optimized PID Controller Based on Ant Colony Algorithm (ACO-PID) for the Position Control of a Multi-articulated System

    In this article, a robot manipulator is controlled by the PID controller in a closed loop system with unit feedback. The difficulty of using the controller is parameter tuning, because the tuning parameters still use the trial and error method to find the PID parameter constants, namely Proportional Gain (Kp), Integral Gain (Ki) and Derivative Gain (Kd). In this case the Ant colony Optimization algorithm (ACO) is used to find the best gain parameters of the PID. The Ant algorithm is a method of combinatorial optimization, which utilizes the pattern of ants search for the shortest path from the nest to the place where the food is located, this concept is applied to tuning PID parameters by minimizing the objective function such that the robot manipulator has improved performance characteristics. This work uses the Matlab Simulink environment, First, after obtaining the system model, the ant colony algorithm is used to determine the proper coefficients p, i, and Kd in order to minimize the trajectory errors of the two joints of the robot manipulator. Then, the parameters will implement in the robot system. According to the results of the computer simulations, the proposed method (ACO-PID) gives a system that has a good performance compared with the classical PID

    ChatABL: Abductive Learning via Natural Language Interaction with ChatGPT

    Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have recently demonstrated significant potential in mathematical abilities, providing valuable reasoning paradigm consistent with human natural language. However, LLMs currently have difficulty in bridging perception, language understanding and reasoning capabilities due to incompatibility of the underlying information flow among them, making it challenging to accomplish tasks autonomously. On the other hand, abductive learning (ABL) frameworks for integrating the two abilities of perception and reasoning has seen significant success in inverse decipherment of incomplete facts, but it is limited by the lack of semantic understanding of logical reasoning rules and the dependence on complicated domain knowledge representation. This paper presents a novel method (ChatABL) for integrating LLMs into the ABL framework, aiming at unifying the three abilities in a more user-friendly and understandable manner. The proposed method uses the strengths of LLMs' understanding and logical reasoning to correct the incomplete logical facts for optimizing the performance of perceptual module, by summarizing and reorganizing reasoning rules represented in natural language format. Similarly, perceptual module provides necessary reasoning examples for LLMs in natural language format. The variable-length handwritten equation deciphering task, an abstract expression of the Mayan calendar decoding, is used as a testbed to demonstrate that ChatABL has reasoning ability beyond most existing state-of-the-art methods, which has been well supported by comparative studies. To our best knowledge, the proposed ChatABL is the first attempt to explore a new pattern for further approaching human-level cognitive ability via natural language interaction with ChatGPT

    A Decision Support System for Economic Viability and Environmental Impact Assessment of Vertical Farms

    Vertical farming (VF) is the practice of growing crops or animals using the vertical dimension via multi-tier racks or vertically inclined surfaces. In this thesis, I focus on the emerging industry of plant-specific VF. Vertical plant farming (VPF) is a promising and relatively novel practice that can be conducted in buildings with environmental control and artificial lighting. However, the nascent sector has experienced challenges in economic viability, standardisation, and environmental sustainability. Practitioners and academics call for a comprehensive financial analysis of VPF, but efforts are stifled by a lack of valid and available data. A review of economic estimation and horticultural software identifies a need for a decision support system (DSS) that facilitates risk-empowered business planning for vertical farmers. This thesis proposes an open-source DSS framework to evaluate business sustainability through financial risk and environmental impact assessments. Data from the literature, alongside lessons learned from industry practitioners, would be centralised in the proposed DSS using imprecise data techniques. These techniques have been applied in engineering but are seldom used in financial forecasting. This could benefit complex sectors which only have scarce data to predict business viability. To begin the execution of the DSS framework, VPF practitioners were interviewed using a mixed-methods approach. Learnings from over 19 shuttered and operational VPF projects provide insights into the barriers inhibiting scalability and identifying risks to form a risk taxonomy. Labour was the most commonly reported top challenge. Therefore, research was conducted to explore lean principles to improve productivity. A probabilistic model representing a spectrum of variables and their associated uncertainty was built according to the DSS framework to evaluate the financial risk for VF projects. This enabled flexible computation without precise production or financial data to improve economic estimation accuracy. The model assessed two VPF cases (one in the UK and another in Japan), demonstrating the first risk and uncertainty quantification of VPF business models in the literature. The results highlighted measures to improve economic viability and the viability of the UK and Japan case. The environmental impact assessment model was developed, allowing VPF operators to evaluate their carbon footprint compared to traditional agriculture using life-cycle assessment. I explore strategies for net-zero carbon production through sensitivity analysis. Renewable energies, especially solar, geothermal, and tidal power, show promise for reducing the carbon emissions of indoor VPF. Results show that renewably-powered VPF can reduce carbon emissions compared to field-based agriculture when considering the land-use change. The drivers for DSS adoption have been researched, showing a pathway of compliance and design thinking to overcome the ‘problem of implementation’ and enable commercialisation. Further work is suggested to standardise VF equipment, collect benchmarking data, and characterise risks. This work will reduce risk and uncertainty and accelerate the sector’s emergence

    Machine learning enabled millimeter wave cellular system and beyond

    Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication with advantages of abundant bandwidth and immunity to interference has been deemed a promising technology for the next generation network and beyond. With the help of mmWave, the requirements envisioned of the future mobile network could be met, such as addressing the massive growth required in coverage, capacity as well as traffic, providing a better quality of service and experience to users, supporting ultra-high data rates and reliability, and ensuring ultra-low latency. However, due to the characteristics of mmWave, such as short transmission distance, high sensitivity to the blockage, and large propagation path loss, there are some challenges for mmWave cellular network design. In this context, to enjoy the benefits from the mmWave networks, the architecture of next generation cellular network will be more complex. With a more complex network, it comes more complex problems. The plethora of possibilities makes planning and managing a complex network system more difficult. Specifically, to provide better Quality of Service and Quality of Experience for users in the such network, how to provide efficient and effective handover for mobile users is important. The probability of handover trigger will significantly increase in the next generation network, due to the dense small cell deployment. Since the resources in the base station (BS) is limited, the handover management will be a great challenge. Further, to generate the maximum transmission rate for the users, Line-of-sight (LOS) channel would be the main transmission channel. However, due to the characteristics of mmWave and the complexity of the environment, LOS channel is not feasible always. Non-line-of-sight channel should be explored and used as the backup link to serve the users. With all the problems trending to be complex and nonlinear, and the data traffic dramatically increasing, the conventional method is not effective and efficiency any more. In this case, how to solve the problems in the most efficient manner becomes important. Therefore, some new concepts, as well as novel technologies, require to be explored. Among them, one promising solution is the utilization of machine learning (ML) in the mmWave cellular network. On the one hand, with the aid of ML approaches, the network could learn from the mobile data and it allows the system to use adaptable strategies while avoiding unnecessary human intervention. On the other hand, when ML is integrated in the network, the complexity and workload could be reduced, meanwhile, the huge number of devices and data could be efficiently managed. Therefore, in this thesis, different ML techniques that assist in optimizing different areas in the mmWave cellular network are explored, in terms of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) beam tracking, handover management, and beam management. To be specific, first of all, a procedure to predict the angle of arrival (AOA) and angle of departure (AOD) both in azimuth and elevation in non-line-of-sight mmWave communications based on a deep neural network is proposed. Moreover, along with the AOA and AOD prediction, a trajectory prediction is employed based on the dynamic window approach (DWA). The simulation scenario is built with ray tracing technology and generate data. Based on the generated data, there are two deep neural networks (DNNs) to predict AOA/AOD in the azimuth (AAOA/AAOD) and AOA/AOD in the elevation (EAOA/EAOD). Furthermore, under an assumption that the UE mobility and the precise location is unknown, UE trajectory is predicted and input into the trained DNNs as a parameter to predict the AAOA/AAOD and EAOA/EAOD to show the performance under a realistic assumption. The robustness of both procedures is evaluated in the presence of errors and conclude that DNN is a promising tool to predict AOA and AOD in a NLOS scenario. Second, a novel handover scheme is designed aiming to optimize the overall system throughput and the total system delay while guaranteeing the quality of service (QoS) of each user equipment (UE). Specifically, the proposed handover scheme called O-MAPPO integrates the reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm and optimization theory. An RL algorithm known as multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) plays a role in determining handover trigger conditions. Further, an optimization problem is proposed in conjunction with MAPPO to select the target base station and determine beam selection. It aims to evaluate and optimize the system performance of total throughput and delay while guaranteeing the QoS of each UE after the handover decision is made. Third, a multi-agent RL-based beam management scheme is proposed, where multiagent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) is applied on each small-cell base station (SCBS) to maximize the system throughput while guaranteeing the quality of service. With MADDPG, smart beam management methods can serve the UEs more efficiently and accurately. Specifically, the mobility of UEs causes the dynamic changes of the network environment, the MADDPG algorithm learns the experience of these changes. Based on that, the beam management in the SCBS is optimized according the reward or penalty when severing different UEs. The approach could improve the overall system throughput and delay performance compared with traditional beam management methods. The works presented in this thesis demonstrate the potentiality of ML when addressing the problem from the mmWave cellular network. Moreover, it provides specific solutions for optimizing NLOS beam tracking, handover management and beam management. For NLOS beam tracking part, simulation results show that the prediction errors of the AOA and AOD can be maintained within an acceptable range of ±2. Further, when it comes to the handover optimization part, the numerical results show the system throughput and delay are improved by 10% and 25%, respectively, when compared with two typical RL algorithms, Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) and Deep Q-learning (DQL). Lastly, when it considers the intelligent beam management part, numerical results reveal the convergence performance of the MADDPG and the superiority in improving the system throughput compared with other typical RL algorithms and the traditional beam management method

    Science and corporeal religion: a feminist materialist reconsideration of gender/sex diversity in religiosity

    This dissertation develops a feminist materialist interpretation of the role the neuroendocrine system plays in the development of gender/sex differences in religion. Data emerging from psychology, sociology, and cognitive science have continually indicated that women are more religious than men, in various senses of those contested terms, but the factors contributing to these findings are little understood and disciplinary perspectives are often unhelpfully siloed. Previous scholarship has tended to highlight socio-cultural factors while ignoring biological factors or to focus on biological factors while relying on problematic and unsubstantiated gender stereotypes. Addressing gender/sex difference is vital for understanding religion and how we study it. This dissertation interprets this difference by means of a multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological approach. This approach builds upon insights from the cognitive and evolutionary science of religion, affect theory and affective neuroscience, and social neuroendocrinology, and it is rooted in the foundational insights of feminist materialism, including that cultural and micro-sociological forces are inseparable from biological materiality. The dissertation shows how a better way of understanding gender/sex differences in religion emerges through focusing on the co-construction of biological materiality and cultural meanings. This includes deploying a gene-culture co-evolutionary explanation of ultrasociality and an understanding of the biology of performativity to argue that religious behavior and temperaments emerge from the enactment and hormonal underpinnings of six affective adaptive desires: the desires for (1) bonding and attachment, (2) communal mythos, (3) deliverance from suffering, (4) purpose, (5) understanding, and (6) reliable leadership. By hypothesizing the patterns of hormonal release and activation associated with ritualized affects—primarily considering oxytocin, testosterone, vasopressin, estrogen, dopamine, and serotonin—the dissertation theorizes four dimensions of religious temperament: (1) nurturant religiosity, (2) ecstatic religiosity, (3) protective/hierarchical religiosity, and (4) antagonistic religiosity. This dissertation conceptualizes hormones as chemical messengers that enable the diversity emerging from the imbrication of physical materiality and socio-cultural forces. In doing so, it demonstrates how hormonal aspects of gender/sex and culturally constructed aspects of gender/sex are always already intertwined in their influence on religiosity. This theoretical framework sheds light on both the diversity and the noticeable patterns observed in gender/sex differences in religious behaviors and affects. This problematizes the terms of the “women are more religious than men” while putting in place a more adequate framework for interpreting the variety of ways it appears in human lives
