    Connected intelligent sensing reshapes our society by empowering people with increasing new ways of mutual interactions. As integration technologies keep their scaling roadmap, the horizon of sensory applications is rapidly widening, thanks to myriad light-weight low-power or, in same cases even self-powered, smart devices with high-connectivity capabilities. CMOS integrated circuits technology is the best candidate to supply the required smartness and to pioneer these emerging sensory systems.     Experimental Verification and Integration of a Next Generation Smart Power Management System

    With the increase in energy demand by the residential community in this country and the diminishing fossil fuel resources being used for electric energy production there is a need for a system to efficiently manage power within a residence. The Smart Green Power Node (SGPN) is a next generation energy management system that automates on-site energy production, storage, consumption, and grid usage to yield the most savings for both the utility and the consumer. Such a system automatically manages on-site distributed generation sources such as a PhotoVoltaic (PV) input and battery storage to curtail grid energy usage when the price is high. The SGPN high level control features an advanced modular algorithm that incorporates weather data for projected PV generation, battery health monitoring algorithms, user preferences for load prioritization within the home in case of an outage, Time of Use (ToU) grid power pricing, and status of on-site resources to intelligently schedule and manage power flow between the grid, loads, and the on-site resources. The SGPN has a scalable, modular architecture such that it can be customized for user specific applications. This drove the topology for the SGPN which connects on-site resources at a low voltage DC microbus; a two stage bi-directional inverter/rectifier then couples the AC load and residential grid connect to on-site generation. The SGPN has been designed, built, and is undergoing testing.     Multiport DC-DC Converters for Hybrid Energy Systems

    Renewable energy sources (RESs) like solar and wind have gained attention for their potential to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change. However, integrating multiple RESs into a power grid is challenging due to their unpredictable nature. Power electronic converters can manage hybrid energy systems by controlling power flow between RESs, storages, and the grid. Conventional single input dc-dc converters have limitations such as low efficiency, bulky designs, and complex control systems. Multiport dc-dc converters (MPCs) have emerged as a solution for hybridizing multiple sources, storages, and load systems by providing a common interface. Existing MPCs have limitations such as high component count, limited operational range, complex control strategies and restrictions on the number of inputs to list a few. Thus, there is a need to develop new MPCs that combine the advantages of existing designs while overcoming their limitations. Isolated MPCs with unipolar or bipolar outputs are needed that can accommodate any number of inputs, offer high voltage gain, use fixed magnetic components for galvanic isolation (regardless of the number of ports), and have a simplified control strategy. Additionally, new non-isolated MPCs with unipolar or bipolar outputs are required, featuring reduced component count, simultaneous power transfer and power flow between input ports, high voltage gain, low control complexity, and modular design allowing for arbitrary increase in the number of input ports. There is also an opportunity to apply MPCs in the integration of RESs and storages to ac grids through multilevel inverters for low component count, high efficiency, low harmonics, and higher power density.     High Power Density and High Efficiency Converter Topologies for Renewable Energy Conversion and EV Applications

    This dissertation work presents two novel converter topologies (a three-level ANPC inverter utilizing hybrid Si/SiC switches and an Asymmetric Alternate Arm Converter (AAAC) topology) that are suitable for high efficiency and high-power density energy conversion systems. The operation principle, modulation, and control strategy of these newly introduced converter topologies are presented in detail supported by simulation and experimental results. A thorough design optimization of these converter topologies (Si/SiC current rating ratio optimization and gate control strategies for the three-level ANPC inverter topology and component sizing for the asymmetric alternate arm converter topology) are also presented. Performance comparison of the proposed converter topologies with other similar converter topologies is also presented. The performance of the proposed ANPC inverter topology is compared with other ANPC inverter topologies such as an all SiC MOSFET ANPC inverter topology, an all Si IGBT ANPC inverter topology and mixed Si IGBT and SiC MOSFET based ANPC inverter topologies in terms of efficiency and cost. The efficiency and cost comparison results show that the proposed hybrid Si/SiC switch based ANPC inverter has higher efficiency and lower cost compared to the other ANPC inverter topologies considered for the comparison. The performance of the asymmetric alternate arm converter topology is also compared with other similar voltage source converter topologies such as the modular multilevel converter topology, the alternate arm converter topology, and the improved alternate arm converter topology in terms of total device count, number of switches per current conduction path, output voltage levels, dc-fault blocking capability and overmodulation capability. The proposed multilevel converter topology has lower total number of devices and lower number of devices per current conduction path hence it has lower cost and lower conduction power loss. However, it has lower number of output voltage levels (requiring larger ac interface inductors) and lacks dc-fault blocking and overmodulation operation capabilities. A converter figure-of-merit accounting for the hybrid Si/SiC switch and converter topology properties is also proposed to help perform quick performance comparison between different hybrid Si/SiC switch based converter topologies. It eliminates the need for developing full electro-thermal power loss model for different converter topologies that would otherwise be needed to carry out power loss comparison between different converter topologies.
