    Dynamic modelling and control schemes for current-source resonant converters

In fact, the existing applications are mostly working with voltage source resonant converters. For voltage-source resonant converters, many control strategies have been analyzed and investigated, turning this into a mature technology nowadays. The current-source resonant converter is an alternative solution as they offer well-known advantages such as non-pulsating input current, low stress for switches, simple driving circuitry, and short circuit protection capabilities. However, there is an obvious lack of control methods applicable to current-source resonant converters. In addition, obtaining an appropriate dynamic model to be used in control design is the other challenging issue in this field. Hence, the objectives of this thesis are used to fill these gaps. The proposed control schemes are: - Frequency modulation control scheme applied to a DC/DC current-source parallel resonant converter. - Sliding mode control scheme with amplitude modulation applied to a DC/DC current-source parallel resonant converter. - A control scheme for a multiple-output DC/DC current-source parallel resonant converter. - A communication-less control scheme for a variable air-gap wireless energy transfer system using a current-source resonant converter.Esta tesis doctoral está centrada en los métodos de control aplicados a los convertidores resonantes con fuente de corriente, especialmente en dos aplicaciones distintas como son fuentes de alimentación conmutadas y sistemas de transferencia de energía sin hilos. De hecho, las aplicaciones existentes trabajan principalmente con convertidores alimentados mediante fuentes de tensión. Para los convertidores resonantes con fuente de tensión, se han analizado muchas estrategias de control en la literatura, lo que hace hoy en día que esta sea una tecnología madura. El convertidor resonante con fuente de corriente es una solución alternativa, que ofrece ventajas conocidas como corriente de entrada no pulsante, baja tensión para interruptores, circuitos de conducción sencillos y capacidades de protección contra cortocircuitos. Sin embargo, existe una falta evidente de métodos de control aplicables a los convertidores resonantes con fuente de corriente. Además, otro desafío en este tema es la obtención de modelos dinámicos apropiados para el diseño del control. Por lo tanto, los objetivos de esta tesis se utilizan para llenar estos vacíos.     Wireless power transfer techniques have been gaining researchers' and industry attention due to the increasing number of battery-powered devices, such as mobile computers, mobile phones, smart devices, intelligent sensors, mainly as a way to replace the standard cable charging, but also for powering battery-less equipment. The storage capacity of batteries is an extremely important element of how a device can be used. If we talk about battery-powered electronic equipment, the autonomy is one factor that may be essential in choosing a device or another, making the solution of remote powering very attractive. A distinction has to be made between the two forms of wireless power transmission, as seen in terms of how the transmitted energy is used at the receiving point: - Transmission of information or data, when it is essential for an amount of energy to reach the receiver to restore the transmitted information; - Transmission of electric energy in the form of electromagnetic field, when the energy transfer efficiency is essential, the power being used to energize the receiving equipment.     A stabilizing control scheme based on a Lyapunov function is proposed for wireless power transfer (or WPT) systems. A state-space model of the WPT system is developed and the Lyapunov function is formulated based on an energy equation of the system involving state variables. The internal resistance of a battery varies during charge and discharge. Therefore, if a WPT system is used to charge a battery, its output load will vary. Furthermore, the coupling coefficient between the transmitter (primary) and receiver (secondary) coils decreases when they are misaligned. Comparative case studies are conducted to verify the efficacy of the proposed controller in maintaining stability of the WPT system under load variation and acute misalignment of transmitter and receiver coils

    Development of a Digitally Controlled Inductive Power Transfer System with Post-Regulation for Variable Load Demand

    none6noInductive Power Transfer (IPT) is an emerging technology enabling a contactless charging process in manifold applications such as electric vehicles, wearable and portable devices, or biomedical applications. Such technology can be profitably used to develop enhanced electronic solutions in the framework of smart cities, homes and smart workplaces. This paper presents the development and realization of a series–series compensated IPT System (IPTS) followed by a post-regulator implemented by means of a DC–DC converter. Such a system is modeled through a first harmonic approximation method, and a sensitivity analysis of the IPTS performance is carried out with respect to the variations of the primary inverter switching frequency and phase-shift angle. As an element of novelty of this work, the bias points are determined which allow the efficiency maximization while ensuring system controllability. An enhanced dynamic modeling of the system is then performed by means of a coupled mode theory, including the inverter phase-shift modulation and extending its validity to whatever operating frequency. A digital control of the post-regulator is implemented by means of a commercial low-cost microcontroller enabling the output voltage regulation under both fixed and variable load conditions through a voltage mode control technique. An IPTS prototype is eventually realized, which is able to correctly perform the output voltage regulation at the desired nominal value of 12 V for static resistive loads in the range [5, 24] W, yielding the output power in the range [6, 28.8]Wand the experimental efficiencies going from 72.1% (for 24 W) to 91.7% (for 5 W). The developed system can also be effectively used to deliver up to 35Woutput power to variable loads, as demonstrated during the battery charging test.     Considering a future scenario in which a driverless Electric Vehicle (EV) needs an automatic charging system without human intervention. In this regard, there is a requirement for a fully automatable, fast, safe, cost-effective, and reliable charging infrastructure that provides a profitable business model and fast adoption in the electrified transportation systems. These qualities can be comprehended through wireless charging systems. Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is a futuristic technology with the advantage of flexibility, convenience, safety, and the capability of becoming fully automated. In WPT methods resonant inductive wireless charging has to gain more attention compared to other wireless power transfer methods due to high efficiency and easy maintenance. This literature presents a review of the status of Resonant Inductive Wireless Power Transfer Charging technology also highlighting the present status and its future of the wireless EV market. First, the paper delivers a brief history throw lights on wireless charging methods, highlighting the pros and cons. Then, the paper aids a comparative review of different type’s inductive pads, rails, and compensations technologies done so far. The static and dynamic charging techniques and their characteristics are also illustrated. The role and importance of power electronics and converter types used in various applications are discussed. The batteries and their management systems as well as various problems involved in WPT are also addressed. Different trades like cyber security economic effects, health and safety, foreign object detection, and the effect and impact on the distribution grid are explored. Prospects and challenges involved in wireless charging systems are also highlighting in this work.     Optimum Modelling Of Flux-pipe Resonant Coils For Static And Dynamic Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer System Applicable To Electric Vehicles

    Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology enables the transfer of electrical power from the electric grid to the electric vehicles across an airgap using electromagnetic fields with the help of wireless battery chargers. WPT technology addresses most problems associated with the “plug-in” method of charging EVs like vandalization, system power losses, and safety problems due to hanging cables and opened electrical contact in addition to the flexibility of charging electric vehicles while in a static or dynamic mode of operation. Significant research has been undertaken over the years in the development of efficient WPT topologies applicable to electric vehicles. A preliminary review of these revealed that the ferrite core WPT is a promising and efficient method of charging electric vehicles. The charging method is suitable for wireless charging of electric vehicles because of its low cost, high efficiency and high power output. This research proposed the use of the flux-pipe model as a suitable ferrite core, magnetic resonance coupled-based WPT system for the charging of the electric vehicle. The traditional flux-pipe model has some specific benefits which include high coupling coefficient, high misalignment tolerance and high efficiencies under misalignment conditions. However, it has a major drawback of low power output due to the generation of an equal amount of useful and non-useful fluxes. A set of governing equations guiding the performance output of a WPT system was presented. It was identified that the losses in the WPT system can be minimized by reducing the value of the maximum magnetic flux density while the power output and efficiency can be increased by increasing the value of the coupling factor and quality factor. Based on these findings, 3-D finite element modelling was employed for the optimal design and analysis of a typical flux-pipe model for higher coupling strength, high power output and low losses. The magnetic coupling performance of flux-pipe resonant coils was enhanced with an increased number of turns along the core length relative to increasing the width of each coil turns along the coil width. The high power transfer and efficiency was attained by splitting of the coil windings into two in order to reduce intrinsic coil resistances; copper sheet was employed as a shielding material in order to reduce the eddy current losses and finally, an air gap was introduced in the ferrite core in order to reduce the core losses and invariably increased the amount of excitation current required to drive the core into saturation. The proposed optimization methodology results in the creation of two models for application in static and dynamic charging operations respectively. From the simulation results presented, the model designed for static charging operations can transfer up to 11 kW of power across the airgap at a coil-to-coil efficiency of 99.12% while the model design for dynamic charging of electric vehicles can transfer up to 13 kW of power across the airgap at a coil-to-coil efficiency of 98.64% without exceeding the average limit specified for the exposure of human body to electromagnetic fields
