From Shop floor to top floor. An exploratory study of sustainable progression in the retial sector: the case of Morrisons

    Get PDF
There has been increasing political and media attention given to the issue of social mobility in recent times. The interest has been sparked by research which suggests that social mobility may have stalled or even declined in the UK during the post-war period. Various factors have been identified as inhibiting social mobility including early years experiences in the home and at school, education and health along with area based influences. Employment and labour market experiences are also key factors contributing to social mobility with the importance of ‘getting a job’ and ‘sustainable progression’ increasingly recognised as an important means of improving social mobility. There now appears consensus that occupational mobility and career development is a key factor in overcoming social mobility, and the extent to which organisations develop pathways and support careers is a critical element in pursuing social mobility. This exploratory study has been commissioned by Morrisons to investigate the factors which impact on progression in the workplace and the effect of these on the social mobility of research participants. The study adopts the framework of ‘career development’ as a construct to explore sustainable progression, drawing on the employment and labour market experiences of employees at Morrisons who, having started on the ‘shop floor’ have progressed to senior management levels in the company. The study is based on their ‘life stories’ to identify the key factors associated with a successful career at Morrisons

    Get PDF
Self-efficacy, or confidence, as an outcome behavior has been identified as influencing nursing job satisfaction and retention. Clinical learning environments and teaching strategies that build and support perceived self-efficacy are critical aspects of preparing new nurses for their entry and continuing role as professional nurses in today\u27s information-intensive data-management healthcare environment. The purpose of this pre-test post-test study is to measure, using the C-scale (Grundy, 1992), nursing students\u27 self-efficacy to perform patient assessment in Nurse Managed Centers (NMC) after one semester of using the Omaha System documentation framework. Nursing students\u27 attitudes of preparation for using Standardized Nursing Languages (SNL) in the future was also examined. Bandura\u27s (1977, 19986) theoretical model of self-efficacy provided the conceptual framework. Students\u27 overall self-efficacy scores increased significantly over the 12 week study. Use of the Omaha System \u27prepared a little\u27 to \u27very prepared\u27 90% of student nurses for future use of SNL. Continued use of the Omaha System documentation framework in Nurse Managed Center clinicals as a tool for understanding SNL is recommended.

Stress is common among faculty during their college work. They can often experience high levels of stress because they frequently encounter various challenges at their workplace that can negatively affect their academic performance and general health. However, familiar sources of stress among faculty working in higher education sectors have not been clearly defined. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the familiar sources of stress among them in the region of Visakhapatnam. One of the northeastern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh belongs to south India. This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The convenience sample included 85 faculties working in various higher education colleges in Visakhapatnam. The Faculty Stress Index (FSI) was used to describe the sources of stress from four domains: academic load, financial concerns, personal problems, and interface worries. The majority (60%) of the participants were aged between 31 and 60. The primary source of stress was academic load and interface teaching and research responsibilities (M = 3.74, SD = 1.156), followed by financial worries (M = 3.73, SD = 1.285), lack of appreciation regarding their contributions (M =3.61, SD = 1.319), and personal problems to excel in teaching evaluations (M = 2.75, SD = 1.272). The faculty’s stress resulting from their academic load was higher than the other sources of stress, and it was related to a large number of materials like targeted assignments, extended working hours, or other research-related works required for faculty. It is suggested to create a positive and supportive work environment at the workplace, implement strategies for workload management, and professional development opportunities.Published By: Blue Eyes Intelligence Engineering and Sciences Publication (BEIESP) © Copyright: All rights reserved

The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to examine the differences between teachers\u27 mean job satisfaction scores based on the administrators\u27 gender and examine the relationship between the administrators\u27 gender and teachers\u27 organizational commitment plans in Tennessee middle schools. Job satisfaction and organizational commitment was measured by the Tennessee Teaching, Empowering, Leading and Learning (TELL) Survey that was administered online and completed by Tennessee teachers voluntarily and anonymously. A stratified random selection of schools based on the administrator\u27s gender (female, n = 85; male, n = 85) was selected (N = 170) from those achieving the predetermined response criteria of 50% return rate. Schools where the principal had been in position for less than three years were excluded. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to analyze the association between the dependent variable, job satisfaction, based on the independent variable, administrators\u27 gender. Pearson\u27s chi-square analysis was used to analyze the relationship between administrators\u27 gender and teachers\u27 organizational commitment plans in education. Significance was with the implications for increased gender awareness, teacher commitment and satisfaction, and teacher retention

The study aim to explore organizational climate as a predictor of employee job satisfaction of academic staff from a private Nigerian University. The study of the antecedents of job satisfaction is important because of the role it plays in job satisfaction of employees which in turn affects organizational productivity. Data were collected from three hundred and eighty-four academic staff of the university with the aid of questionnaire out of which a total of two hundred and ninety-three questionnaires were returned fully and appropriately filled. Three hypotheses were tested and the results of the finding showed a significant positive relationship between these two variables. Thus, the study then paves way into other research opportunities in the field to stretch the depth of knowledge into public universities- i.e. the federal and state universities. It also serves as eye opener to conduct the research into other zones in Nigeria to see whether their organizational climate in relation to job satisfaction of the academics in those places will differ from what we have in the south-west Nigeria. Therefore, apart from confirming a theoretical proposition, the findings of this study are likely to have significant practical value
