KV-match: A Subsequence Matching Approach Supporting Normalization and Time Warping [Extended Version]
The volume of time series data has exploded due to the popularity of new
applications, such as data center management and IoT. Subsequence matching is a
fundamental task in mining time series data. All index-based approaches only
consider raw subsequence matching (RSM) and do not support subsequence
normalization. UCR Suite can deal with normalized subsequence match problem
(NSM), but it needs to scan full time series. In this paper, we propose a novel
problem, named constrained normalized subsequence matching problem (cNSM),
which adds some constraints to NSM problem. The cNSM problem provides a knob to
flexibly control the degree of offset shifting and amplitude scaling, which
enables users to build the index to process the query. We propose a new index
structure, KV-index, and the matching algorithm, KV-match. With a single index,
our approach can support both RSM and cNSM problems under either ED or DTW
distance. KV-index is a key-value structure, which can be easily implemented on
local files or HBase tables. To support the query of arbitrary lengths, we
extend KV-match to KV-match, which utilizes multiple varied-length
indexes to process the query. We conduct extensive experiments on synthetic and
real-world datasets. The results verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our

AT-GIS: highly parallel spatial query processing with associative transducers
Users in many domains, including urban planning, transportation, and environmental science want to execute analytical queries over continuously updated spatial datasets. Current solutions for largescale spatial query processing either rely on extensions to RDBMS, which entails expensive loading and indexing phases when the data changes, or distributed map/reduce frameworks, running on resource-hungry compute clusters. Both solutions struggle with the sequential bottleneck of parsing complex, hierarchical spatial data formats, which frequently dominates query execution time. Our goal is to fully exploit the parallelism offered by modern multicore CPUs for parsing and query execution, thus providing the performance of a cluster with the resources of a single machine. We describe AT-GIS, a highly-parallel spatial query processing system that scales linearly to a large number of CPU cores. ATGIS integrates the parsing and querying of spatial data using a new computational abstraction called associative transducers(ATs). ATs can form a single data-parallel pipeline for computation without requiring the spatial input data to be split into logically independent blocks. Using ATs, AT-GIS can execute, in parallel, spatial query operators on the raw input data in multiple formats, without any pre-processing. On a single 64-core machine, AT-GIS provides 3Ă— the performance of an 8-node Hadoop cluster with 192 cores for containment queries, and 10Ă— for aggregation queries
Efficient query processing for scalable web search
Search engines are exceptionally important tools for accessing information in today’s world. In satisfying the information needs of millions of users, the effectiveness (the quality of the search results) and the efficiency (the speed at which the results are returned to the users) of a search engine are two goals that form a natural trade-off, as techniques that improve the effectiveness of the search engine can also make it less efficient. Meanwhile, search engines continue to rapidly evolve, with larger indexes, more complex retrieval strategies and growing query volumes. Hence, there is a need for the development of efficient query processing infrastructures that make appropriate sacrifices in effectiveness in order to make gains in efficiency. This survey comprehensively reviews the foundations of search engines, from index layouts to basic term-at-a-time (TAAT) and document-at-a-time (DAAT) query processing strategies, while also providing the latest trends in the literature in efficient query processing, including the coherent and systematic reviews of techniques such as dynamic pruning and impact-sorted posting lists as well as their variants and optimisations. Our explanations of query processing strategies, for instance the WAND and BMW dynamic pruning algorithms, are presented with illustrative figures showing how the processing state changes as the algorithms progress. Moreover, acknowledging the recent trends in applying a cascading infrastructure within search systems, this survey describes techniques for efficiently integrating effective learned models, such as those obtained from learning-to-rank techniques. The survey also covers the selective application of query processing techniques, often achieved by predicting the response times of the search engine (known as query efficiency prediction), and making per-query tradeoffs between efficiency and effectiveness to ensure that the required retrieval speed targets can be met. Finally, the survey concludes with a summary of open directions in efficient search infrastructures, namely the use of signatures, real-time, energy-efficient and modern hardware and software architectures
FLASH: Randomized Algorithms Accelerated over CPU-GPU for Ultra-High Dimensional Similarity Search
We present FLASH (\textbf{F}ast \textbf{L}SH \textbf{A}lgorithm for
\textbf{S}imilarity search accelerated with \textbf{H}PC), a similarity search
system for ultra-high dimensional datasets on a single machine, that does not
require similarity computations and is tailored for high-performance computing
platforms. By leveraging a LSH style randomized indexing procedure and
combining it with several principled techniques, such as reservoir sampling,
recent advances in one-pass minwise hashing, and count based estimations, we
reduce the computational and parallelization costs of similarity search, while
retaining sound theoretical guarantees.
We evaluate FLASH on several real, high-dimensional datasets from different
domains, including text, malicious URL, click-through prediction, social
networks, etc. Our experiments shed new light on the difficulties associated
with datasets having several million dimensions. Current state-of-the-art
implementations either fail on the presented scale or are orders of magnitude
slower than FLASH. FLASH is capable of computing an approximate k-NN graph,
from scratch, over the full webspam dataset (1.3 billion nonzeros) in less than
10 seconds. Computing a full k-NN graph in less than 10 seconds on the webspam
dataset, using brute-force (), will require at least 20 teraflops. We
