    AR2T : implementing a truly SRAM-based FPGA on-line concurrent testing

    Get PDF
The new partial and dynamic reconfigurable features offered by new generations of SRAM-based FPGAs may be used to improve the dependability of reconfigurable hardware platforms through the implementation of on-line concurrent testing / fault tolerance mechanisms. However, such mechanisms imply the existence of new test strategies that do not interfere with the current system functionality. The AR2T (Active Replication and Release for Testing) technique is a set of procedures that enables the implementation of a truly non-intrusive structural on-line concurrent testing approach, detecting and avoiding permanent faults and correcting errors due to transient faults. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of these solutions. In relation to a previous technique proposed by the authors as part of the DRAFT FPGA concurrent test methodology, AR2T extends the range of circuits that can be replicated, by introducing a small replication aid block

Efficient Simulation of Structural Faults for the Reliability Evaluation at System-Level

In recent technology nodes, reliability is considered a part of the standard design ¿ow at all levels of embedded system design. While techniques that use only low-level models at gate- and register transfer-level offer high accuracy, they are too inefficient to consider the overall application of the embedded system. Multi-level models with high abstraction are essential to efficiently evaluate the impact of physical defects on the system. This paper provides a methodology that leverages state-of-the-art techniques for efficient fault simulation of structural faults together with transaction-level modeling. This way it is possible to accurately evaluate the impact of the faults on the entire hardware/software system. A case study of a system consisting of hardware and software for image compression and data encryption is presented and the method is compared to a standard gate/RT mixed-level approac

Testability Analysis of Synchronous Sequential Circuits Based On Structural Data

Bounds on test sequence length can be used as a testability measure. We give a procedure to compute the upper bound on test sequence length for an arbitrary sequential circuit. We prove that the bound is exact for a certain class of circuits. Three design rules are specified to yield circuits with lower test sequence bounds

Built-In Self-Test (BIST) for Multi-Threshold NULL Convention Logic (MTNCL) Circuits

    Get PDF
This dissertation proposes a Built-In Self-Test (BIST) hardware implementation for Multi-Threshold NULL Convention Logic (MTNCL) circuits. Two different methods are proposed: an area-optimized topology that requires minimal area overhead, and a test-performance-optimized topology that utilizes parallelism and internal hardware to reduce the overall test time through additional controllability points. Furthermore, an automated software flow is proposed to insert, simulate, and analyze an input MTNCL netlist to obtain a desired fault coverage, if possible, through iterative digital and fault simulations. The proposed automated flow is capable of producing both area-optimized and test-performance-optimized BIST circuits and scripts for digital and fault simulation using commercial software that may be utilized to manually verify or adjust further, if desired

Investigations into the feasibility of an on-line test methodology

    Get PDF
This thesis aims to understand how information coding and the protocol that it supports can affect the characteristics of electronic circuits. More specifically, it investigates an on-line test methodology called IFIS (If it Fails It Stops) and its impact on the design, implementation and subsequent characteristics of circuits intended for application specific lC (ASIC) technology. The first study investigates the influences of information coding and protocol on the characteristics of IFIS systems. The second study investigates methods of circuit design applicable to IFIS cells and identifies the· technique possessing the characteristics most suitable for on-line testing. The third study investigates the characteristics of a 'real-life' commercial UART re-engineered using the techniques resulting from the previous two studies. The final study investigates the effects of the halting properties endowed by the protocol on failure diagnosis within IFIS systems. The outcome of this work is an identification and characterisation of the factors that influence behaviour, implementation costs and the ability to test and diagnose IFIS designs

Advanced information processing system: The Army fault tolerant architecture conceptual study. Volume 2: Army fault tolerant architecture design and analysis

Described here is the Army Fault Tolerant Architecture (AFTA) hardware architecture and components and the operating system. The architectural and operational theory of the AFTA Fault Tolerant Data Bus is discussed. The test and maintenance strategy developed for use in fielded AFTA installations is presented. An approach to be used in reducing the probability of AFTA failure due to common mode faults is described. Analytical models for AFTA performance, reliability, availability, life cycle cost, weight, power, and volume are developed. An approach is presented for using VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) to describe and design AFTA's developmental hardware. A plan is described for verifying and validating key AFTA concepts during the Dem/Val phase. Analytical models and partial mission requirements are used to generate AFTA configurations for the TF/TA/NOE and Ground Vehicle missions

FPGA BASED SELF-HEALING STRATEGY FOR SYNCHRONOUS SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS

The paper develops an efficient mechanism with a view to healing bridging faults in synchronous sequential circuits. The scheme inserts faults randomly into the system at the signal levels, encompasses ways to intrigue the state of the signals and carries it with steps to rig out the true values at the primary output lines. The attempts espouse the ability of the methodology to explore the occurrence of a variety of single and multiple bridging faults and arrive at the true output. The approach enables to detect the occurrence of wired-OR and wired AND bridging faults in the combinational part of the serial binary adder as the CUT and heal both the inter and intra-gate faults through the use of the proposed methodology. It allows claiming a lower area overhead and computationally a sharp increase in the fault coverage area over the existing Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) technique. The Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) based Spartan architecture operates through Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) to synthesize the Modelsim code for validating the simulation exercises. The claim incites to increase the reliability of the synchronous sequential circuits and espouse a place for the use of the strategy in the digital world

Cost modelling and concurrent engineering for testable design

    Get PDF
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. As integrated circuits and printed circuit boards increase in complexity, testing becomes a major cost factor of the design and production of the complex devices. Testability has to be considered during the design of complex electronic systems, and automatic test systems have to be used in order to facilitate the test. This fact is now widely accepted in industry. Both design for testability and the usage of automatic test systems aim at reducing the cost of production testing or, sometimes, making it possible at all. Many design for testability methods and test systems are available which can be configured into a production test strategy, in order to achieve high quality of the final product. The designer has to select from the various options for creating a test strategy, by maximising the quality and minimising the total cost for the electronic system. This thesis presents a methodology for test strategy generation which is based on consideration of the economics during the life cycle of the electronic system. This methodology is a concurrent engineering approach which takes into account all effects of a test strategy on the electronic system during its life cycle by evaluating its related cost. This objective methodology is used in an original test strategy planning advisory system, which allows for test strategy planning for VLSI circuits as well as for digital electronic systems. The cost models which are used for evaluating the economics of test strategies are described in detail and the test strategy planning system is presented. A methodology for making decisions which are based on estimated costing data is presented. Results of using the cost models and the test strategy planning system for evaluating the economics of test strategies for selected industrial designs are presented

    Fault-tolerant computer study

A set of building block circuits is described which can be used with commercially available microprocessors and memories to implement fault tolerant distributed computer systems. Each building block circuit is intended for VLSI implementation as a single chip. Several building blocks and associated processor and memory chips form a self checking computer module with self contained input output and interfaces to redundant communications buses. Fault tolerance is achieved by connecting self checking computer modules into a redundant network in which backup buses and computer modules are provided to circumvent failures. The requirements and design methodology which led to the definition of the building block circuits are discussed
