    The PRISMA Hand II: A Sensorized Robust Hand for Adaptive Grasp and In-Hand Manipulation

    Although substantial progresses have been made in building anthropomorphic robotic hands, lack of mechanical robustness, dexterity and force sensation still restrains wide adoption of robotic prostheses. This paper presents the design and preliminary evaluation of the PRISMA hand II, which is a mechanically robust anthropomorphic hand developed at the PRISMA Lab of University of Naples Federico II. The hand is highly underactuated, as the 19 finger joints are driven by three motors via elastic tendons. Nevertheless, the hand can performs not only adaptive grasps but also in-hand manipulation. The hand uses rolling contact joints, which is compliant in multiple directions. Force sensor are integrated to each fingertip in order to provide force feedback during grasping and manipulation. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the hand. Results show that the hand can perform various grasps and in-hand manipulation, while the structure can withstand severe disarticulation. This suggests that the proposed design can be a viable solution for robust and dexterous prosthetic hands

    Characterisation and State Estimation of Magnetic Soft Continuum Robots

    Minimally invasive surgery has become more popular as it leads to less bleeding, scarring, pain, and shorter recovery time. However, this has come with counter-intuitive devices and steep surgeon learning curves. Magnetically actuated Soft Continuum Robots (SCR) have the potential to replace these devices, providing high dexterity together with the ability to conform to complex environments and safe human interactions without the cognitive burden for the clinician. Despite considerable progress in the past decade in their development, several challenges still plague SCR hindering their full realisation. This thesis aims at improving magnetically actuated SCR by addressing some of these challenges, such as material characterisation and modelling, and sensing feedback and localisation. Material characterisation for SCR is essential for understanding their behaviour and designing effective modelling and simulation strategies. In this work, the material properties of commonly employed materials in magnetically actuated SCR, such as elastic modulus, hyper-elastic model parameters, and magnetic moment were determined. Additionally, the effect these parameters have on modelling and simulating these devices was investigated. Due to the nature of magnetic actuation, localisation is of utmost importance to ensure accurate control and delivery of functionality. As such, two localisation strategies for magnetically actuated SCR were developed, one capable of estimating the full 6 degrees of freedom (DOFs) pose without any prior pose information, and another capable of accurately tracking the full 6-DOFs in real-time with positional errors lower than 4~mm.     Designing a New Tactile Display Technology and its Disability Interactions

    People with visual impairments have a strong desire for a refreshable tactile interface that can provide immediate access to full page of Braille and tactile graphics. Regrettably, existing devices come at a considerable expense and remain out of reach for many. The exorbitant costs associated with current tactile displays stem from their intricate design and the multitude of components needed for their construction. This underscores the pressing need for technological innovation that can enhance tactile displays, making them more accessible and available to individuals with visual impairments. This research thesis delves into the development of a novel tactile display technology known as Tacilia. This technology's necessity and prerequisites are informed by in-depth qualitative engagements with students who have visual impairments, alongside a systematic analysis of the prevailing architectures underpinning existing tactile display technologies. The evolution of Tacilia unfolds through iterative processes encompassing conceptualisation, prototyping, and evaluation. With Tacilia, three distinct products and interactive experiences are explored, empowering individuals to manually draw tactile graphics, generate digitally designed media through printing, and display these creations on a dynamic pin array display. This innovation underscores Tacilia's capability to streamline the creation of refreshable tactile displays, rendering them more fitting, usable, and economically viable for people with visual impairments

    Shortest Route at Dynamic Location with Node Combination-Dijkstra Algorithm

    Abstract— Online transportation has become a basic requirement of the general public in support of all activities to go to work, school or vacation to the sights. Public transportation services compete to provide the best service so that consumers feel comfortable using the services offered, so that all activities are noticed, one of them is the search for the shortest route in picking the buyer or delivering to the destination. Node Combination method can minimize memory usage and this methode is more optimal when compared to A* and Ant Colony in the shortest route search like Dijkstra algorithm, but can’t store the history node that has been passed. Therefore, using node combination algorithm is very good in searching the shortest distance is not the shortest route. This paper is structured to modify the node combination algorithm to solve the problem of finding the shortest route at the dynamic location obtained from the transport fleet by displaying the nodes that have the shortest distance and will be implemented in the geographic information system in the form of map to facilitate the use of the system.
