© Institution of Engineering and Technology. All Rights Reserved. This paper presents two pattern reconfigurable techniques to realize linear (LP) and circular (CP) broadside and conical-beam switchable radiation patterns from a single antenna. First, a wideband monopolar patch and a L-probe fed patch were organically integrated together to achieve a wideband (2.25 to 2.85 GHz) broadside and conical-beam pattern reconfigurable system that radiates LP radiation. Radiation coverage and wireless channel capacity were improved significantly making the reported LP antenna a good candidate as a ceiling mounted antenna for indoor wireless communications. On the other hand, a circularly-polarized (CP) broadside and conical-beam reconfigurable antenna would be preferred for satellite communications. To realize it, we successfully excited both the TM11 and TM21 modes on a circular patch with an annular slot antenna. A reconfigurable feeding network was designed to provide the correct excitations for these two modes. CP switchable broadside and conical radiated beams were realized within the same overlapping frequency ranges from 2.45 to 2.65 GHz. Both the LP and CP antennas were fabricated and tested. Experimental results show good agreement with their simulated performance characteristics. Very good radiation performance was obtained

Compact-Size Low-Profile Wideband Circularly Polarized Omnidirectional Patch Antenna With Reconfigurable Polarizations

A compact-size low-profile wideband circularly polarized (CP) omnidirectional antenna with reconfigurable polarizations is presented in this communication. This design is based on a low-profile omnidirectional CP antenna which consists of a vertically polarized microstrip patch antenna working in TM01/TM02 modes and sequentially bended slots etched on the ground plane for radiating horizontally polarized electric field. The combined radiation from both the microstrip patch and the slots leads to a CP omnidirectional radiation pattern. The polarization reconfigurability is realized by introducing PIN diodes on the slots. By electronically controlling the states of the PIN diodes, the effective orientation of the slots on ground plane can be changed dynamically and the polarization of antenna can be altered between left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP). The proposed antenna exhibits a wide-operational bandwidth of 19.8% (2.09-2.55 GHz) with both axial ratio below 3 dB and return loss above 10 dB when radiates either LHCP or RHCP waves. Experimental results show good agreement with the simulation results. The present design has a compact size, a thickness of only 0.024? and exhibits stable CP omnidirectional conical-beam radiation patterns within the entire operating frequency band with good circular polarization

A novel Multi-permittivity Cylindrical Dielectric Resonator Antenna for Wideband Applications

    Get PDF
In this paper, a novel multi-permittivity cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna for wideband application is presented. The multi-permittivity cylinder is formed by combining two different permittivity material sectors in such a way that each sector (with constant permittivity) is 90 degree apart. A direct microstrip line coupling terminated with T-stub at the open end is used to excite the multi-permittivity cylindrical dielectric resonator. The angular position of the multi sector dielectric resonator with respect to the longitudinal axis of the microstrip line and length of the additional strip at the open end of the feeding circuit is key parameters for wideband operation of the antenna. By optimizing all parameters of the proposed antenna, wideband impedance bandwidth of 56% (12.1 GHz - 21.65 GHz) is achieved. The average gain of the antenna throughout the bandwidth is 5.9 dB with good radiation properties in both E-plane and H-plane. A well matched simulation and experimental results show that the antenna is suitable for wideband applications

Design and Study of a Circular Polarised Conical-Disc-Backed Spiral Antenna for X-Band Applications

    Get PDF
Design of a conical-disc-backed circular-polarized Archimedean single-arm spiral antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna operation covers the X-band frequencies ranging from 8 to 12 GHz. The antenna makes use of a very simple structure having the single-arm spiral backed by a cone-shaped metallic disc to achieve high gain, circular polarization, and unidirectional symmetric radiation near the boresight. The diameter of the antenna only measures to 40 mm. The simulated and measured results show that the antenna has a very good impedance matching (better than -10 dB), good right-hand circular polarization (with an axial ratio of ≤3 dB) throughout the frequency range of interest, and offers a maximum peak gain of 11.4 dBiC. The presented S 11 response and radiation pattern results also show that the antenna offers excellent performance in the X-band with no need of a balun. Antenna usefulness is also established through a detailed parametric study and comparison with a traditional flat disc structure. Compact size, simple design, wide range, and high gain make the proposed antenna design a good choice for radar, terrestrial communications, and satellite/aerospace communications applications

Multipolarization-reconfigurable air-filled substrate integrated waveguide cavity-backed slot antenna

A novel single-feed ultrawideband cavity-backed slot antenna with a reconfigurable polarization capability is demonstrated in substrate-independent air-filled substrate integrated waveguide (AFSIW) technology for Internet-of-Things applications in the [5.15-5.85] GHz frequency band of the unlicensed national information infrastructure. The antenna achieves an ultrawide impedance bandwidth by exploiting a double ring of slots and supports four switchable linear polarization states (+/- 45 degrees, 0 degrees, +45 degrees, and 90 degrees) by leveraging four quartets of p-i-n diodes. By electrically shorting the slots at well-defined positions by these p-i-n diodes, dynamic polarization reconfiguration is achieved by switching their dc bias current, supplied at the antenna feed through an external bias tee and routed from the antenna's back to front cavity plane via the AFSIW sidewalls. This new simple, yet effective, bias network enables the integration of all polarization control electronics inside the antenna cavity to protect them from environmental effects. Finally, measurements prove that the prototype exhibits an overlapping impedance bandwidth of 29%, from 4.85 to 6.45 GHz, and a stable conically shaped radiation pattern across the operating bandwidth with a 3 dB beamwidth of 45 degrees and a peak gain of 6.5 dBi for all four states

Shuttle orbiter Ku-band radar/communications system design evaluation: High gain antenna/widebeam horn

The physical characteristics of the high gain antenna reflector and feed elements are described. Deficiencies in the sum feed are discussed, and lack of atmospheric venting is posed as a potential problem area. The measured RF performance of the high gain antenna is examined and the high sidelobe levels measured are related to the physical characteristics of the antenna. An examination of the attributes of the feed which might be influenced by temperature extremes shows that the antenna should be insensitive to temperature variations. Because the feed support bipod structure is considered a significant contributor to the high sidelobe levels measured in the azimuth plane, pod relocation, material changes, and shaping are suggested as improvements. Alternate feed designs are presented to further improve system performance. The widebeam horn and potential temperature effects due to the polarizer are discussed as well as in the effects of linear polarization on TDRS acquisition, and the effects of circular polarization on radar sidelobe avoidance. The radar detection probability is analyzed as a function of scan overlap and target range

All-metal wideband metasurface for near-field transformation of medium-to-high gain electromagnetic sources

Electromagnetic (EM) metasurfaces are essential in a wide range of EM engineering applications, from incorporated into antenna designs to separate devices like radome. Near-field manipulators are a class of metasurfaces engineered to tailor an EM source's radiation patterns by manipulating its near-field components. They can be made of all-dielectric, hybrid, or all-metal materials; however, simultaneously delivering a set of desired specifications by an all-metal structure is more challenging due to limitations of a substrate-less configuration. The existing near-field phase manipulators have at least one of the following limitations; expensive dielectric-based prototyping, subject to ray tracing approximation and conditions, narrowband performance, costly manufacturing, and polarization dependence. In contrast, we propose an all-metal wideband phase correcting structure (AWPCS) with none of these limitations and is designed based on the relative phase error extracted by post-processing the actual near-field distributions of any EM sources. Hence, it is applicable to any antennas, including those that cannot be accurately analyzed with ray-tracing, particularly for near-field analysis. To experimentally verify the wideband performance of the AWPCS, a shortened horn antenna with a large apex angle and a non-uniform near-field phase distribution is used as an EM source for the AWPCS. The measured results verify a significant improvement in the antenna's aperture phase distribution in a large frequency band of 25%
