A Survey of Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Network Models for Engineering Applications
This survey samples from the ever-growing family of adaptive resonance theory
(ART) neural network models used to perform the three primary machine learning
modalities, namely, unsupervised, supervised and reinforcement learning. It
comprises a representative list from classic to modern ART models, thereby
painting a general picture of the architectures developed by researchers over
the past 30 years. The learning dynamics of these ART models are briefly
described, and their distinctive characteristics such as code representation,
long-term memory and corresponding geometric interpretation are discussed.
Useful engineering properties of ART (speed, configurability, explainability,
parallelization and hardware implementation) are examined along with current
challenges. Finally, a compilation of online software libraries is provided. It
is expected that this overview will be helpful to new and seasoned ART
researchers
One-Class Classification: Taxonomy of Study and Review of Techniques
One-class classification (OCC) algorithms aim to build classification models
when the negative class is either absent, poorly sampled or not well defined.
This unique situation constrains the learning of efficient classifiers by
defining class boundary just with the knowledge of positive class. The OCC
problem has been considered and applied under many research themes, such as
outlier/novelty detection and concept learning. In this paper we present a
unified view of the general problem of OCC by presenting a taxonomy of study
for OCC problems, which is based on the availability of training data,
algorithms used and the application domains applied. We further delve into each
of the categories of the proposed taxonomy and present a comprehensive
literature review of the OCC algorithms, techniques and methodologies with a
focus on their significance, limitations and applications. We conclude our
paper by discussing some open research problems in the field of OCC and present

Deep Neural Ensemble for Retinal Vessel Segmentation in Fundus Images towards Achieving Label-free Angiography
Automated segmentation of retinal blood vessels in label-free fundus images
entails a pivotal role in computed aided diagnosis of ophthalmic pathologies,
viz., diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive disorders and cardiovascular diseases.
The challenge remains active in medical image analysis research due to varied
distribution of blood vessels, which manifest variations in their dimensions of
physical appearance against a noisy background.
In this paper we formulate the segmentation challenge as a classification
task. Specifically, we employ unsupervised hierarchical feature learning using
ensemble of two level of sparsely trained denoised stacked autoencoder. First
level training with bootstrap samples ensures decoupling and second level
ensemble formed by different network architectures ensures architectural
revision. We show that ensemble training of auto-encoders fosters diversity in
learning dictionary of visual kernels for vessel segmentation. SoftMax
classifier is used for fine tuning each member auto-encoder and multiple
strategies are explored for 2-level fusion of ensemble members. On DRIVE
dataset, we achieve maximum average accuracy of 95.33\% with an impressively
low standard deviation of 0.003 and Kappa agreement coefficient of 0.708 .
Comparison with other major algorithms substantiates the high efficacy of our

LiDAR and Camera Detection Fusion in a Real Time Industrial Multi-Sensor Collision Avoidance System
Collision avoidance is a critical task in many applications, such as ADAS
(advanced driver-assistance systems), industrial automation and robotics. In an
industrial automation setting, certain areas should be off limits to an
automated vehicle for protection of people and high-valued assets. These areas
can be quarantined by mapping (e.g., GPS) or via beacons that delineate a
no-entry area. We propose a delineation method where the industrial vehicle
utilizes a LiDAR {(Light Detection and Ranging)} and a single color camera to
detect passive beacons and model-predictive control to stop the vehicle from
entering a restricted space. The beacons are standard orange traffic cones with
a highly reflective vertical pole attached. The LiDAR can readily detect these
beacons, but suffers from false positives due to other reflective surfaces such
as worker safety vests. Herein, we put forth a method for reducing false
positive detection from the LiDAR by projecting the beacons in the camera
imagery via a deep learning method and validating the detection using a neural
network-learned projection from the camera to the LiDAR space. Experimental
data collected at Mississippi State University's Center for Advanced Vehicular
Systems (CAVS) shows the effectiveness of the proposed system in keeping the
true detection while mitigating false positives.Comment: 34 page
