    During the summer of 2016 the IUPUC ME Division envi-sioned the concept of an “Imagineering Lab” based largely on academic makerspace concepts. Important sub-sections of the Imagineering Lab are its “Actualization Lab” (mecha-tronics, actuators, sensors, DAQ devices etc.) and a “Spatial Innovation Lab” (SIL) based on developing “dream stations” (computer work stations) equipped with exciting new tech-nology in intuitive 2D and 3D image creation and Virtual Reality (VR) technology. The objective of the SIL is to cre-ate a work flow converting intuitively created imagery to an-imation, engineering simulation and analysis and computer driven manufacturing interfaces.     This paper argues that urban planners and policy-makers lack an effective future-oriented approach enabling them to comprehend current complexity, anticipate impending change and shape a preferred future condition. In doing so it: - reviews the performance of contemporary city planning; - examines the need to chart and navigate the city technosphere by reference to city capital; - explores ways in which planning can benefit from a futures studies approach; - describes generally how futures-oriented thinking can produce effective city prospective; and, - poses specifically a number of questions regarding the concept of the intelligent city’. The paper concludes by calling for the formulation of a Unified Theory for Sustainable Cities by reference to Gaia and the application of futures-oriented technology assessment

    Imagineering Black (Im)Possibility: Unearthing Afrofuturist Materialist Interventions

    To borrow from the Hip Hop pioneer KRS-One, Afrofuturism has the capacity to “make worlds with words,” creating contemporary sacred texts reliant on the past and the future concurrently for the navigation of social realities. Over the last twenty years Afrofuturist thinkers such as Alondra Nelson, Ytasha Womack, among others, have expanded early thinking to encapsulate ideas of race, gender, technology and how they operate in literature, in particular science fiction. With this emergent force, time has been taken to evaluate and analyze the literary sites of knowledge production; however, little critical engagement has been concerned with other forms of cultural expression and the ways they engineer possibilities through reimagining the past and rearticulating the future. In this work, I contend that in order to embrace the full potential of these worlds, equal attention must be attributed to varied visual and embodied artistic expressions. The words remain significant, and might tell us something about how to handle the subsequent material, but the visual, material, and embodied dimensions of African American survival through imagination tell a great deal about the historic effort of African Americans to celebrate and demonstrate a humanity denied by the forces of enslavement, segregation, and racism

    This chapter will examine the role of co-design methods in relation to the recent Pararchive Project (http://pararchive.com) that took place between 2013 and 2015 at the University of Leeds. It will draw on the experiences of conducting the project and broader critical frames to examine the nature of collaborative working in the field of cultural heritage and storytelling. It will outline the lessons we have learned from the process and the ways in which the relationships between citizens and cultural institutions are central to working in the heritage sector. It seeks to advocate for the necessity of collaborative methods in the creation of cultural heritage tools that are trusted and adopted by communities
