Rethinking the Delivery Architecture of Data-Intensive Visualization

    Get PDF
The web has transformed the way people create and consume information. However, data-intensive science applications have rarely been able to take full benefits of the web ecosystem so far. Analysis and visualization have remained close to large datasets on large servers and desktops, because of the vast resources that data-intensive applications require. This hampers the accessibility and on-demand availability of data-intensive science. In this work, I propose a novel architecture for the delivery of interactive, data-intensive visualization to the web ecosystem. The proposed architecture, codenamed Fabric, follows the idea of keeping the server-side oblivious of application logic as a set of scalable microservices that 1) manage data and 2) compute data products. Disconnected from application logic, the services allow interactive data-intensive visualization be simultaneously accessible to many users. Meanwhile, the client-side of this architecture perceives visualization applications as an interaction-in image-out black box with the sole responsibility of keeping track of application state and mapping interactions into well-defined and structured visualization requests. Fabric essentially provides a separation of concern that decouples the otherwise tightly coupled client and server seen in traditional data applications. Initial results show that as a result of this, Fabric enables high scalability of audience, scientific reproducibility, and improves control and protection of data products

Dynamic Mashup Interfaces for Information Systems using Widgets-as-a-Service

Web Information Systems intend to adapt to the users’ preferences as new data available on the network. In this regard, the composition and reuse of services which are involved in a web application is an interesting research topic, since these techniques pursue the dynamic construction of applications that can be adapted at design or run time. As for the visualization of these applications, web user interfaces play a key role, serving as a connection point between users and the rest of the system. This article proposes an architecture for specification, storage, management and visualization of components, built from widgets complying with the W3C recommendation, for making web user interfaces. We follow a service-based approach for the interface deployment and communication management, introducing the concept of Widgets-as-a-Service (WaaS). To illustrate this proposal, an example of widget-based Web Information System is shown

Purpose The signiïŹcant purpose of conducting this research is to find out more about folksonomy-based services with the help of word cloud and tag cloud. Broader terms and narrower terms are searching on bibliographic records and linking web repositories. It shows the integration mechanism of the word cloud and tag cloud with ILS OPAC using Koha and HTML scripts. Designing and developing a process for easy retrieving of library resources based on folksonomy enabled services. These new innovative services are very much helpful for library users. Methodology This folksonomy-based integrated framework has been developed and designed based on global repositories. Word cloud and tag cloud are possible with the help of HTML scripts and Koha ILS OPAC. Developed a framework for incorporating the HTML script in Koha OPAC main user block based on tools and news options in staff client interfaces. The HTML script has been designed from the word cloud concept in the online repository. This integrated web 2.0 framework is very fruitful to library professionals because it depends on a LAMP architecture. The whole system and services have been developed on Ubuntu operating system. Findings Folksonomy-based services can be achieved for the users after proper configuration and adding of these concepts. It is possible to provide the web 2.0 services with the help of word cloud and tag cloud from Koha ILS OPAC. Related terms and links can be accessed using this integrated framework. So, folksonomy-based services have been provided by using these techniques. Originality The originality of this study is keyword visualization based on folksonomy services. This integrated framework belongs to web 2.0 concepts. It is possible to generate the word cloud and tag cloud in ILS OPAC in the form of visualization. This is very useful and conducive to library users. So all the libraries are very much attracted to these modern services and strategies. This integrated framework is based on web 2.0, and folksonomy-enabled services in tag and word cloud. Overall, it is possible to integrate and generate these services with OPAC to increase modern information retrieval systems and services

Web Processing Services for Forestry and Environmental Applications

Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.Nowadays spatial processing on the web is becoming a requirement for more and more web applications. The use of processes helps to find solutions to a wide range of spatial problems and extends the common functionality of Web GIS. There are many open source technologies that can be implemented in each component of a Web GIS application. Forestry and environmental problems, with their strong territorial implications, are especially suitable to be analyzed applying these technologies. In order to create an application with spatial processes, we propose a framework with a layered service-based architecture. It is layered because its structure is divided in a set of functional layers: the user layer (geoportal or client), the service layer (inside the server) and the data layer (spatial database). The access and processing of spatial data is accomplished through adequate service standards of OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium): Web Map Services (WMS), Web Feature Services (WFS), Web Coverage Services (WCS) and Web Processing Services (WPS). We implement a complete forestry – related application from scratch that offers access, visualization, querying and processing of spatial data and an active user interaction. The key of the application is WPS. Additionally, other processing solutions (like making queries with the spatial database) are discussed. In brief, this work presents an overview of the current technology and possible solutions for integrating spatial processes on the web and proposes some guidelines to implement them in a fully working system

This paper presents an innovative collaborative visualization platform for the simulation-based design applications. Following the scope and the main objectives, the general architecture based on the internet standard technologies is explained. Based on a multi-domain approach, several demonstrators are involved crossing interests of industrial and academic communities. Related to the field of process engineering, we adapt and deploy a web-based architecture research application on the targeted platform

Triangulum City Dashboard: An Interactive Data Analytic Platform for Visualizing Smart City Performance

    Get PDF
Cities are becoming smarter by incorporating hardware technology, software systems, and network infrastructure that provide Information Technology (IT) systems with real-time awareness of the real world. What makes a “smart city” functional is the combined use of advanced infrastructure technologies to deliver its core services to the public in a remarkably efficient manner. City dashboards have drawn increasing interest from both city operators and citizens. Dashboards can gather, visualize, analyze, and inform regional performance to support the sustainable development of smart cities. They provide useful tools for evaluating and facilitating urban infrastructure components and services. This work proposes an interactive web-based data visualization and data analytics toolkit supported by big data aggregation tools. The system proposed is a cloud-based prototype that supports visualization and real-time monitoring of city trends while processing and displaying large data sets on a standard web browser. However, it is capable of supporting online analysis processing by answering analytical queries and producing graphics from multiple resources. The aim of this platform is to improve communication between users and urban service providers and to give citizens an overall view of the city’s state. The conceptual framework and architecture of the proposed platform are explored, highlighting design challenges and providing insight into the development of smart cities. Moreover, results and the potential statistical analysis of important city services offered by the system are introduced. Finally, we present some challenges and opportunities identified through the development of the city data platform.publishedVersio

    Planetary Science Virtual Observatory architecture

In the framework of the Europlanet-RI program, a prototype of Virtual Observatory dedicated to Planetary Science was defined. Most of the activity was dedicated to the elaboration of standards to retrieve and visualize data in this field, and to provide light procedures to teams who wish to contribute with on-line data services. The architecture of this VO system and selected solutions are presented here, together with existing demonstrators
