Modeling bursts and heavy tails in human dynamics
Current models of human dynamics, used from risk assessment to
communications, assume that human actions are randomly distributed in time and
thus well approximated by Poisson processes. We provide direct evidence that
for five human activity patterns the timing of individual human actions follow
non-Poisson statistics, characterized by bursts of rapidly occurring events
separated by long periods of inactivity. We show that the bursty nature of
human behavior is a consequence of a decision based queuing process: when
individuals execute tasks based on some perceived priority, the timing of the
tasks will be heavy tailed, most tasks being rapidly executed, while a few
experiencing very long waiting times. We discuss two queueing models that
capture human activity. The first model assumes that there are no limitations
on the number of tasks an individual can hadle at any time, predicting that the
waiting time of the individual tasks follow a heavy tailed distribution with
exponent alpha=3/2. The second model imposes limitations on the queue length,
resulting in alpha=1. We provide empirical evidence supporting the relevance of
these two models to human activity patterns. Finally, we discuss possible
extension of the proposed queueing models and outline some future challenges in
exploring the statistical mechanisms of human dynamics.Comment: RevTex, 19 pages, 8 figure
An examination of automatic video retrieval technology on access to the contents of an historical video archive
Purpose â This paper aims to provide an initial understanding of the constraints that historical video collections pose to video retrieval technology and the potential that online access offers to both archive and users.
Design/methodology/approach â A small and unique collection of videos on customs and folklore was used as a case study. Multiple methods were employed to investigate the effectiveness of technology and the modality of user access. Automatic keyframe extraction was tested on the visual content while the audio stream was used for automatic classification of speech and music clips. The user access (search vs browse) was assessed in a controlled user evaluation. A focus group and a survey provided insight on the actual use of the analogue archive. The results of these multiple studies were then compared and integrated (triangulation).
Findings â The amateur material challenged automatic techniques for video and audio indexing, thus suggesting that the technology must be tested against the material before deciding on a digitisation strategy. Two user interaction modalities, browsing vs searching, were tested in a user evaluation. Results show users preferred searching, but browsing becomes essential when the search engine fails in matching query and indexed words. Browsing was also valued for serendipitous discovery; however the organisation of the archive was judged cryptic and therefore of limited use. This indicates that the categorisation of an online archive should be thought of in terms of users who might not understand the current classification. The focus group and the survey showed clearly the advantage of online access even when the quality of the video surrogate is poor. The evidence gathered suggests that the creation of a digital version of a video archive requires a rethinking of the collection in terms of the new medium: a new archive should be specially designed to exploit the potential that the digital medium offers. Similarly, users' needs have to be considered before designing the digital library interface, as needs are likely to be different from those imagined.
Originality/value â This paper is the first attempt to understand the advantages offered and limitations held by video retrieval technology for small video archives like those often found in special collections
The feasibility of capturing learner interactions based on logs informed by eye-tracking and remote observation studies
Two small studies, one an eye-tracking study and the other a remote observation study, have been conducted to investigate ways to identify two kinds of online learner interactions: users flicking through the web pages in "browsing" action, and users engaging with the content of a page in "learning" action. The video data from four participants of the two small studies using the OpenLearn open educational resource materials offers some evidence for differentiating between 'browsing' and 'learning'. Further analysis of the data has considered possible ways of identifying similar browsing and learning actions based on automatic user logs. This research provides a specification for researching the pedagogical value of capturing and transforming logs of user interactions into external forms of representations. The paper examines the feasibility and challenge of capturing learner interactions giving examples of external representations such as sequence flow charts, timelines, and table of logs. The objective users information these represent offer potential for understanding user interactions both to aid design and improve feedback means that they should be given greater consideration alongside other more subjective ways to research user experience
Moving Usability Testing onto the Web
Abstract: In order to remotely obtain detailed usability data by tracking user behaviors
within a given web site, a server-based usability testing environment has been
created. Web pages are annotated in such a way that arbitrary user actions (such as
"mouse over link" or "click back button") can be selected for logging. In addition,
the system allows the experiment designer to interleave interactive questions into
the usability evaluation, which for instance could be triggered by a particular sequence
of actions. The system works in conjunction with clustering and visualization
algorithms that can be applied to the resulting log file data. A first version of
the system has been used successfully to carry out a web usability evaluation

Investigating the information-seeking behaviour of academic lawyers: From Ellis's model to design.
Information-seeking is important for lawyers, who have access to many dedicated electronic resources.However there is considerable scope for improving the design of these resources to better support information-seeking. One way of informing design is to use information-seeking models as theoretical lenses to analyse usersâ behaviour with existing systems. However many models, including those informed by studying lawyers, analyse information-seeking at a high level of abstraction and are only likely to lead to broad-scoped design insights. We illustrate that one potentially useful (and lowerlevel) model is Ellisâs - by using it as a lens to analyse and make design suggestions based on the information-seeking behaviour of twenty-seven academic lawyers, who were asked to think aloud whilst using electronic legal resources to find information for their work. We identify similar information-seeking behaviours to those originally found by Ellis and his colleagues in scientific domains, along with several that were not identified in previous studies such as âupdatingâ (which we believe is particularly pertinent to legal information-seeking). We also present a refinement of Ellisâs model based on the identification of several levels that the behaviours were found to operate at and the identification of sets of mutually exclusive subtypes of behaviours
Children searching information on the Internet: Performance on children's interfaces compared to Google
Children frequently make use of the Internet to search for information. However, research shows that children experience many problems with searching and browsing the web. The last decade numerous search environments have been developed, especially for children. Do these search interfaces support children in effective information-seeking? And do these interfaces add value to todayâs popular search engines, such as Google? In this explorative study, we compared childrenâs search performance on four interfaces designed for children, with their performance on Google. We found that the children did not perform better on these interfaces than on Google. This study also uncovered several problems that children experienced with these search interfaces, which can be of use for designers of future search interfaces for children
Agents, Bookmarks and Clicks: A topical model of Web traffic
Analysis of aggregate and individual Web traffic has shown that PageRank is a
poor model of how people navigate the Web. Using the empirical traffic patterns
generated by a thousand users, we characterize several properties of Web
traffic that cannot be reproduced by Markovian models. We examine both
aggregate statistics capturing collective behavior, such as page and link
traffic, and individual statistics, such as entropy and session size. No model
currently explains all of these empirical observations simultaneously. We show
that all of these traffic patterns can be explained by an agent-based model
that takes into account several realistic browsing behaviors. First, agents
maintain individual lists of bookmarks (a non-Markovian memory mechanism) that
are used as teleportation targets. Second, agents can retreat along visited
links, a branching mechanism that also allows us to reproduce behaviors such as
the use of a back button and tabbed browsing. Finally, agents are sustained by
visiting novel pages of topical interest, with adjacent pages being more
topically related to each other than distant ones. This modulates the
probability that an agent continues to browse or starts a new session, allowing
us to recreate heterogeneous session lengths. The resulting model is capable of
reproducing the collective and individual behaviors we observe in the empirical
data, reconciling the narrowly focused browsing patterns of individual users
with the extreme heterogeneity of aggregate traffic measurements. This result
allows us to identify a few salient features that are necessary and sufficient
to interpret the browsing patterns observed in our data. In addition to the
descriptive and explanatory power of such a model, our results may lead the way
to more sophisticated, realistic, and effective ranking and crawling
