Although the Internet has received significant attention in recent years, voice is still the most convenient and natural way of communicating between human to human or human to computer. In voice applications, users may have different needs which will require the ability of the system to reason, make decisions, be flexible and adapt to requests during interaction. These needs have placed new requirements in voice application development such as use of advanced models, techniques and methodologies which take into account the needs of different users and environments. The ability of a system to behave close to human reasoning is often mentioned as one of the major requirements for the development of voice applications. In this paper, we present a framework for an intelligent voice-enabled e-Education application and an adaptation of the framework for the development of a prototype Course Registration and Examination (CourseRegExamOnline) module. This study is a preliminary report of an ongoing e-Education project containing the following modules: enrollment, course registration and examination, enquiries/information, messaging/collaboration, e-Learning and library. The CourseRegExamOnline module was developed using VoiceXML for the voice user interface(VUI), PHP for the web user interface (WUI), Apache as the middle-ware and MySQL database as back-end. The system would offer dual access modes using the VUI and WUI. The framework would serve as a reference model for developing voice-based e-Education applications. The e-Education system when fully developed would meet the needs of students who are normal users and those with certain forms of disabilities such as visual impairment, repetitive strain injury (RSI), etc, that make reading and writing difficult

Internet nowadays represents the essential nerve for knowledge and information retrieval, millions of pages are published over the web every single day and valuable information is broadcasted to the public; with this expansion, and information retrieval became a hard task due to the numerous amounts of documents that have high degree of similarity when it comes to text matching schemes. Blind people are part of the communities and part of them are collapsed a way of the revolution of information due to absence of proper tools grants them the ability to surf the internet. This paper and many other efforts are targeting the objectivity of activating blind people interaction with the environment; this paper carries out an innovation scheme by deploying mutli-agent system to provide intelligent assistance services that help blind people getting into the proper page in surfing the internet. Knowledge from other sites are transferred to central unit which holds the experience and utilize it for the behalf of blind people. Multi-agent systems have been deployed and results showed knowledge developed to help blinds. Keywords: HTML5, Web Speech API, Speech Based browser, Intelligent Agent, JADE, knowledge epistemology

Mixed Reality Browsers and Pedestrian Navigation in Augmented Cities

International audienceIn this paper, We use a declarative format for positional audio with synchronization between audio chunks using SMIL. This format has been specifically designed for the type of audio used in AR applications. The audio engine associated to this format is running on mobile platforms (iOS, Android). Our MRB browser called IXE use a format based on volunteered geographic information (OpenStreetMap) and OSM documents for IXE can be fully authored in side OSM editors like JOSM. This is in contrast with the other AR browsers like Layar, Juniao, Wikitude, which use a Point of Interest (POI) based format having no notion of ways. This introduces a fundamental difference and in some senses a duality relation between IXE and the other AR browsers. In IXE, Augmented Virtuality (AV) navigation along a route (composed of ways) is central and AR interaction with objects is delegated to associate 3D activities. In AR browsers, navigation along a route is delegated to associated map activities and AR interaction with objects is central. IXE supports multiple tracking technologies and therefore allows both indoor navigation in buildings and outdoor navigation at the level of sidewalks. A first android version of the IXE browser will be released at the end of 2013. Being based on volunteered geographic it will allow building accessible pedestrian networks in augmented cities

Speech synthesis : Developing a web application implementing speech technology

    Get PDF
Speech is a natural media of communication for humans. Text-to-speech (TTS) technology uses a computer to synthesize speech. There are three main techniques of TTS synthesis. These are formant-based, articulatory and concatenative. The application areas of TTS include accessibility, education, entertainment and communication aid in mass transit. A web application was developed to demonstrate the application of speech synthesis technology. Existing speech synthesis engines for the Finnish language were compared and two open source text to speech engines, Festival and Espeak were selected to be used with the web application. The application uses a Linux-based speech server which communicates with client devices with the HTTP-GET protocol. The application development successfully demonstrated the use of speech synthesis in language learning. One of the emerging sectors of speech technologies is the mobile market due to limited input capabilities in mobile devices. Speech technologies are not equally available in all languages. Text in the Oromo language was tested using Finnish speech synthesizers; due to similar rules in orthography of germination of consonants and length of vowels, legible results were gained

Re-Presenting Text in a Website for Visually Impaired Users using Braille Line

As new web technologies emerging and being adopted in the design of a website, web accessibility has become a major issue especially for people with disabilities .Limitation of assistive technology to render webpage has also been contributing factor for poor web accessibility by the visually impaired users. This issue has caused visually impaired users loss semantic information of webpage besides creating frustration situation of web browsing. In this paper, factors that cause web browsing frustration to the visually impaired users and types of tactile effects that can be implemented in the Braille Line device to render the semantic information of webpage are explored. The main objectives of this project is to build a website reader and program a Braille Line 20 cell device for web browsing focusing on presenting non visual text elements such as font attributes and text hierarchy that can be critical to meaning of the text. Tactile technology have been chosen to be adopted in the Braille Line as the touch is the most active sense of visually-impaired people to acquire knowledge .From the prototype to be build, a sample group of visually impaired users will be taken to test and evaluate the website and the device in terms of technology as well as its effectiveness. The results and recommendations were shared by the end of the project as a key milestone for future renditions of the project
