An isogeometric analysis for elliptic homogenization problems
A novel and efficient approach which is based on the framework of
isogeometric analysis for elliptic homogenization problems is proposed. These
problems possess highly oscillating coefficients leading to extremely high
computational expenses while using traditional finite element methods. The
isogeometric analysis heterogeneous multiscale method (IGA-HMM) investigated in
this paper is regarded as an alternative approach to the standard Finite
Element Heterogeneous Multiscale Method (FE-HMM) which is currently an
effective framework to solve these problems. The method utilizes non-uniform
rational B-splines (NURBS) in both macro and micro levels instead of standard
Lagrange basis. Beside the ability to describe exactly the geometry, it
tremendously facilitates high-order macroscopic/microscopic discretizations
thanks to the flexibility of refinement and degree elevation with an arbitrary
continuity level provided by NURBS basis functions. A priori error estimates of
the discretization error coming from macro and micro meshes and optimal micro
refinement strategies for macro/micro NURBS basis functions of arbitrary orders
are derived. Numerical results show the excellent performance of the proposed
method
Distributed top-k aggregation queries at large
Top-k query processing is a fundamental building block for efficient ranking in a large number of applications. Efficiency is a central issue, especially for distributed settings, when the data is spread across different nodes in a network. This paper introduces novel optimization methods for top-k aggregation queries in such distributed environments. The optimizations can be applied to all algorithms that fall into the frameworks of the prior TPUT and KLEE methods. The optimizations address three degrees of freedom: 1) hierarchically grouping input lists into top-k operator trees and optimizing the tree structure, 2) computing data-adaptive scan depths for different input sources, and 3) data-adaptive sampling of a small subset of input sources in scenarios with hundreds or thousands of query-relevant network nodes. All optimizations are based on a statistical cost model that utilizes local synopses, e.g., in the form of histograms, efficiently computed convolutions, and estimators based on order statistics. The paper presents comprehensive experiments, with three different real-life datasets and using the ns-2 network simulator for a packet-level simulation of a large Internet-style network
VLSI design of universal approximator neuro-fuzzy systems
Neuro-fuzzy systems can theoretically solve any problem since they are universal approximators. Besides, they combine the advantages of the neuro and fuzzy paradigms. This paper describes and compares the different strategies that can be adopted to implement the learning and inference mechanisms involved in a neuro-fuzzy system. CAD tools, most of them integrated into the fuzzy system development environment Xfuzzy 2.0, have been developed to assist the designer in the implementation of neuro-fuzzy systems in FPGAs or ASICs.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC98-0869Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional 1FD97-0956-C3-02
Generalized Functional Additive Mixed Models
We propose a comprehensive framework for additive regression models for
non-Gaussian functional responses, allowing for multiple (partially) nested or
crossed functional random effects with flexible correlation structures for,
e.g., spatial, temporal, or longitudinal functional data as well as linear and
nonlinear effects of functional and scalar covariates that may vary smoothly
over the index of the functional response. Our implementation handles
functional responses from any exponential family distribution as well as many
others like Beta- or scaled non-central -distributions. Development is
motivated by and evaluated on an application to large-scale longitudinal
feeding records of pigs. Results in extensive simulation studies as well as
replications of two previously published simulation studies for generalized
functional mixed models demonstrate the good performance of our proposal. The
approach is implemented in well-documented open source software in the "pffr()"
function in R-package "refund"
State-of-the-art in aerodynamic shape optimisation methods
Aerodynamic optimisation has become an indispensable component for any aerodynamic design over the past 60 years, with applications to aircraft, cars, trains, bridges, wind turbines, internal pipe flows, and cavities, among others, and is thus relevant in many facets of technology. With advancements in computational power, automated design optimisation procedures have become more competent, however, there is an ambiguity and bias throughout the literature with regards to relative performance of optimisation architectures and employed algorithms. This paper provides a well-balanced critical review of the dominant optimisation approaches that have been integrated with aerodynamic theory for the purpose of shape optimisation. A total of 229 papers, published in more than 120 journals and conference proceedings, have been classified into 6 different optimisation algorithm approaches. The material cited includes some of the most well-established authors and publications in the field of aerodynamic optimisation. This paper aims to eliminate bias toward certain algorithms by analysing the limitations, drawbacks, and the benefits of the most utilised optimisation approaches. This review provides comprehensive but straightforward insight for non-specialists and reference detailing the current state for specialist practitioners
