Thesis (M.Arch.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.In February 2010, finance minister Pravin Gordhan said: "None of us can rest or sleep peacefully until every South African can say: I can see a better future, I can find a job. I can learn a skill. Hard work will enable me and my family to have shelter and food. If my children work hard at school and college, they will have a better future and a thousand opportunities. Our people want action on jobs, growth and poverty. We must build a new common purpose so that we can use all of our talents, skills and resources to tackle our economic and social challenges.” (Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan, Budget Speech, 17 February 2010) Education is an essential component of the reconstruction, development and transformation of the South African Society. Due to past governmental policies, a huge gap in the level of education between adults has developed. These people need to be given the skills so that they can reintegrate into their respective communities, becoming active citizens partaking fully in the South African economy. Therefore it is aimed to provide a centre that promotes vocational skills development in the adult sector of the population. It is aimed to promote social reintegration of people through skills development, and aim to enliven previously neglected communities and be a catalyst for community revitalisation, as the centre grows the human resource potential of the respective community. Hence, the aim of this research is to investigate what architectural elements and design factors combine best to promote the most effective educational environments for the adult teaching and learning processes. It will consist of both primary and secondary sources, while conclusions will be drawn from precedent and case studies, but a balance between primary and secondary research is needed in order to create a workable, imaginative and sound architectural solution for the design of an adult education and vocational skills centre

    Resistance in dystopian fiction

This thesis attempts to answer the fundamental question, "How does resistance function in dystopian fiction?" and considers the value of memory and technology within this context. It also articulates the themes of the research within a creative work, a dystopian novel titled The Department of Retribution. With the rising popularity of dystopian fiction, the findings of this project attempt to provide timely insight into why resistance is essential to the genre and how it can be employed via memory and technology. Within the scope of authoritarian structures and their ideological origins, this thesis examines the methods protagonists of dystopian fiction use to push back against oppressive means of control. It discusses memory and its value to characters who resist the state's official narrative of the past, and it examines the ways in which the pitfalls of humanity's reliance on technology are portrayed in dystopian works. The Department of Retribution takes place in a future United States where hard drugs such as methamphetamine have been legalized, fatal combat sports dominate television, and a fourth branch of government, the Corporate Council, wields dominant power. Seventeen-year-old Emile Winkler longs to avenge his little sister's death at the hands of a meth user, and when he turns eighteen he applies for a murder permit from the Department of Retribution that will allow him to achieve this. Legalized murder, however, has life-altering repercussions, and Emile sets out to discover the motivation behind the system that allows it. The exegetical discourse of technological hope and pessimism re-emerges in the novel as I explore the challenge of integrating androids into society as friends and companions, and the issues of equality that might arise. I also consider future psychological developments such as intra-cranial serotonin implants and a programmable re-prioritisation of thoughts and memories called amelioration that may help sufferers of trauma move on from painful, dominating thought patterns

Shelter, Women and Development: First and Third World Perspectives

    Get PDF
Around the world, woman\u27s access to shelter is inextricably linked with her economic, legal, and social status. Policy makers, planners, architects, and other professionals must understand and factor in these crucial aspects when creating shelter for women. An international gathering at the University of Michigan College of Architecture and Urban Planning in 1992 provided an opportunity for dialogue between persons working in this field in the First and Third World and established an exchange of views in a global, multicultural context. The papers underscore the importance of housing to women\u27s economic, legal, and social development and emphasize the need to continue to address and act upon these issues across nations, cultures, and class.https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/books_fac/1001/thumbnail.jp

Meaning is Use: Civic Initiatives and Europeanisation from below in Bulgaria

The research poses the question of how civic initiatives are constituted by and constitutive for the process of Europeanization in Bulgaria. Europeanization as a process, overlapping with democratization, was initiated in Bulgaria with EU support to build democracy and pluralism after the demise of Communism in 1989. The EU’s favoured mechanisms through which liberal democracy was to be embedded, although successful in establishing formal democratic institutions, could not substantially reach citizens and furnish the social base of democracy. The efforts to develop active civil society in Bulgaria remained limited to establishing an NGO sector, which could not truly reflect the meaning of civil society as constituted by actively engaged citizens mobilizing in defence of the common good. This situation was compounded by the continuation of a historically passive political culture in Bulgaria. The research explores the causal link between civic initiatives and Europe implied in the research question through adopting discourse as the key vehicle for developing the theoretical and analytical frameworks. Premised on the poststructuralist emphasis on meaning, Europeanization is theorized as a process of signification whereby democratic norms are fluid and dependent on the experience of people affected by them. The discourse of civic initiatives in Bulgaria is constituted by the liberal democratic norms of action (liberty) and multitude (equality), which they articulate in the hues of Dewey’s understanding of democracy as a way of life. As socially grounded practices they construct an alternative language of democracy around the tropes of moving and multiplying people, which point to a vision of social change captured by the domain of sociality. Unlike the hegemonic discourse of economic liberalism, the agency of civic initiatives draws on the socially grounded knowledge and creativity of individuals to realize the vision of sociality. Analysed as creative democracy they enact the democratic script in practice. In building social and cultural capital in Bulgaria they are engaged in nurturing social relations of cooperation, trust and participation thus constituting multiple spaces of civil society

The communicative theory of Terminology (CTT) applied to the development of a corpus-based specialised dictionary of the ceramics industry

This PhD dissertation is the result of an ongoing process aimed at the creation of a bilingual corpus-based specialised active dictionary of the ceramic industry, with the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT) as its mainstay. According to the grounding principles of the CTT, this research has departed form a corpus-based approach in which terms have been analysed in vivo and characterised from the natural habitat in which they are given in specialised communication/discourse. In this light, it has been put forward how the study of terms – made possible thanks to the activity of compiling and describing them, called terminography – may be complemented by the wider projection of specialised lexicography for the compilation and elaboration of LSP, user-oriented and user-friendly quality products in the form of dictionaries. This specialised lexicographical dimension of the work has necessarily implied the need to renew the concept of speciality language dictionaries applied to the ceramic industry and has given way to the creation of a (prospective) active dictionary in this field with a marked emphasis on context. Accordingly, the importance of pragmatic aspects in a work of this sort, has made it necessary to undertake an in-depth revision and analysis of the socio-economic context for the research in order be able to establish and solve the specific terminological needs that the ceramic industrial discourse community may find. On the basis of this theoretical framework, the method of study followed for the development of the prospective dictionary has comprised 8 broad stages: the stage of work preparation and corpus compilation, the elaboration of the field diagram, the stage of documentary corpus management, term extraction, data processing, revision and normalisation and finally, the edition stage. Two main types of results have been presented: those obtained through work in progress in the different stages of the method and final ones strictly speaking, that is, 4,000 English-Spanish entries in their final format (as they will appear in the prospective dictionary) belonging to the letters A, B, N, O, U and V of a complete dictionary which will include a total of 26,000 entries
