    SPH Simulations with Reconfigurable Hardware Accelerator

    We present a novel approach to accelerate astrophysical hydrodynamical simulations. In astrophysical many-body simulations, GRAPE (GRAvity piPE) system has been widely used by many researchers. However, in the GRAPE systems, its function is completely fixed because specially developed LSI is used as a computing engine. Instead of using such LSI, we are developing a special purpose computing system using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips as the computing engine. Together with our developed programming system, we have implemented computing pipelines for the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method on our PROGRAPE-3 system. The SPH pipelines running on PROGRAPE-3 system have the peak speed of 85 GFLOPS and in a realistic setup, the SPH calculation using one PROGRAPE-3 board is 5-10 times faster than the calculation on the host computer. Our results clearly shows for the first time that we can accelerate the speed of the SPH simulations of a simple astrophysical phenomena using considerable computing power offered by the hardware.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, submitted to PAS

    Performance Analysis of Hardware/Software Co-Design of Matrix Solvers

    Solving a system of linear and nonlinear equations lies at the heart of many scientific and engineering applications such as circuit simulation, applications in electric power networks, and structural analysis. The exponentially increasing complexity of these computing applications and the high cost of supercomputing force us to explore affordable high performance computing platforms. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop hardware friendly parallel processing algorithms and build cost effective high performance parallel systems using hardware in order to enable the solution of large linear systems. In this thesis, FPGA-based general hardware architectures of selected iterative methods and direct methods are discussed. Xilinx Embedded Development Kit (EDK) hardware/software (HW/SW) codesigns of these methods are also presented. For iterative methods, FPGA based hardware architectures of Jacobi, combined Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel, and conjugate gradient (CG) are proposed. The convergence analysis of the LNS-based Jacobi processor demonstrates to what extent the hardware resource constraints and additional conversion error affect the convergence of Jacobi iterative method. Matlab simulations were performed to compare the performance of three iterative methods in three ways, i.e., number of iterations for any given tolerance, number of iterations for different matrix sizes, and computation time for different matrix sizes. The simulation results indicate that the key to a fast implementation of the three methods is a fast implementation of matrix multiplication. The simulation results also show that CG method takes less number of iterations for any given tolerance, but more computation time as matrix size increases compared to other two methods, since matrix-vector multiplication is a more dominant factor in CG method than in the other two methods. By implementing matrix multiplications of the three methods in hardware with Xilinx EDK HW/SW codesign, the performance is significantly improved over pure software Power PC (PPC) based implementation. The EDK implementation results show that CG takes less computation time for any size of matrices compared to other two methods in HW/SW codesign, due to that fact that matrix multiplications dominate the computation time of all three methods while CG requires less number of iterations to converge compared to other two methods. For direct methods, FPGA-based general hardware architecture and Xilinx EDK HW/SW codesign of WZ factorization are presented. Single unit and scalable hardware architectures of WZ factorization are proposed and analyzed under different constraints. The results of Matlab simulations show that WZ runs faster than the LU on parallel processors but slower on a single processor. The simulation results also indicate that the most time consuming part of WZ factorization is matrix update. By implementing the matrix update of WZ factorization in hardware with Xilinx EDK HW/SW codesign, the performance is also apparently improved over PPC based pure software implementation

    Optimising algorithm and hardware for deep neural networks on FPGAs

    This thesis proposes novel algorithm and hardware optimisation approaches to accelerate Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), including both Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Bayesian Neural Networks (BayesNNs). The first contribution of this thesis is to propose an adaptable and reconfigurable hardware design to accelerate CNNs. By analysing the computational patterns of different CNNs, a unified hardware architecture is proposed for both 2-Dimension and 3-Dimension CNNs. The accelerator is also designed with runtime adaptability, which adopts different parallelism strategies for different convolutional layers at runtime. The second contribution of this thesis is to propose a novel neural network architecture and hardware design co-optimisation approach, which improves the performance of CNNs at both algorithm and hardware levels. Our proposed three-phase co-design framework decouples network training from design space exploration, which significantly reduces the time-cost of the co-optimisation process. The third contribution of this thesis is to propose an algorithmic and hardware co-optimisation framework for accelerating BayesNNs. At the algorithmic level, three categories of structured sparsity are explored to reduce the computational complexity of BayesNNs. At the hardware level, we propose a novel hardware architecture with the aim of exploiting the structured sparsity for BayesNNs. Both algorithmic and hardware optimisations are jointly applied to push the performance limit.Open Acces

    An Analog VLSI Deep Machine Learning Implementation

    Machine learning systems provide automated data processing and see a wide range of applications. Direct processing of raw high-dimensional data such as images and video by machine learning systems is impractical both due to prohibitive power consumption and the “curse of dimensionality,” which makes learning tasks exponentially more difficult as dimension increases. Deep machine learning (DML) mimics the hierarchical presentation of information in the human brain to achieve robust automated feature extraction, reducing the dimension of such data. However, the computational complexity of DML systems limits large-scale implementations in standard digital computers. Custom analog signal processing (ASP) can yield much higher energy efficiency than digital signal processing (DSP), presenting means of overcoming these limitations. The purpose of this work is to develop an analog implementation of DML system. First, an analog memory is proposed as an essential component of the learning systems. It uses the charge trapped on the floating gate to store analog value in a non-volatile way. The memory is compatible with standard digital CMOS process and allows random-accessible bi-directional updates without the need for on-chip charge pump or high voltage switch. Second, architecture and circuits are developed to realize an online k-means clustering algorithm in analog signal processing. It achieves automatic recognition of underlying data pattern and online extraction of data statistical parameters. This unsupervised learning system constitutes the computation node in the deep machine learning hierarchy. Third, a 3-layer, 7-node analog deep machine learning engine is designed featuring online unsupervised trainability and non-volatile floating-gate analog storage. It utilizes massively parallel reconfigurable current-mode analog architecture to realize efficient computation. And algorithm-level feedback is leveraged to provide robustness to circuit imperfections in analog signal processing. At a processing speed of 8300 input vectors per second, it achieves 1×1012 operation per second per Watt of peak energy efficiency. In addition, an ultra-low-power tunable bump circuit is presented to provide similarity measures in analog signal processing. It incorporates a novel wide-input-range tunable pseudo-differential transconductor. The circuit demonstrates tunability of bump center, width and height with a power consumption significantly lower than previous works

    Scientific instruments as payload of current space missions are often equipped with high-resolution sensors. Thereby, especially camera-based instruments produce a vast amount of data. To obtain the desired scientific information, this data usually is processed on ground. Due to the high distance of missions within the solar system, the data rate for downlink to the ground station is strictly limited. The volume of scientific relevant data is usually less compared to the obtained raw data. Therefore, processing already has to be carried out on-board the spacecraft. An example of such an instrument is the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on-board Solar Orbiter. For acquisition, storage and processing of images, the instrument is equipped with a Data Processing Module (DPM). It makes use of heterogeneous computing based on a dedicated LEON3 processor in combination with two reconfigurable Xilinx Virtex-4 Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The thesis will provide an overview of the available space-grade processing components (processors and FPGAs) which fulfill the requirements of deepspace missions. It also presents existing processing platforms which are based upon a heterogeneous system combining processors and FPGAs. This also includes the DPM of the PHI instrument, whose architecture will be introduced in detail. As core contribution of this thesis, a framework will be presented which enables high-performance image processing on such hardware-based systems while retaining software-like flexibility. This framework mainly consists of a variety of modules for hardware acceleration which are integrated seamlessly into the data flow of the on-board software. Supplementary, it makes extensive use of the dynamic in-flight reconfigurability of the used Virtex-4 FPGAs. The flexibility of the presented framework is proven by means of multiple examples from within the image processing of the PHI instrument. The framework is analyzed with respect to processing performance as well as power consumption.Wissenschaftliche Instrumente auf aktuellen Raumfahrtmissionen sind oft mit hochauflösenden Sensoren ausgestattet. Insbesondere kamerabasierte Instrumente produzieren dabei eine große Menge an Daten. Diese werden üblicherweise nach dem Empfang auf der Erde weiterverarbeitet, um daraus wissenschaftlich relevante Informationen zu gewinnen. Aufgrund der großen Entfernung von Missionen innerhalb unseres Sonnensystems ist die Datenrate zur Übertragung an die Bodenstation oft sehr begrenzt. Das Volumen der wissenschaftlich relevanten Daten ist meist deutlich kleiner als die aufgenommenen Rohdaten. Daher ist es vorteilhaft, diese bereits an Board der Sonde zu verarbeiten. Ein Beispiel für solch ein Instrument ist der Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) an Bord von Solar Orbiter. Um die Daten aufzunehmen, zu speichern und zu verarbeiten, ist das Instrument mit einem Data Processing Module (DPM) ausgestattet. Dieses nutzt ein heterogenes Rechnersystem aus einem dedizierten LEON3 Prozessor, zusammen mit zwei rekonfigurierbaren Xilinx Virtex-4 Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Die folgende Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über verfügbare Komponenten zur Datenverarbeitung (Prozessoren und FPGAs), die den Anforderungen von Raumfahrtmissionen gerecht werden, und stellt einige existierende Plattformen vor, die auf einem heterogenen System aus Prozessor und FPGA basieren. Hierzu gehört auch das Data Processing Module des PHI Instrumentes, dessen Architektur im Verlauf dieser Arbeit beschrieben wird. Als Kernelement der Dissertation wird ein Framework vorgestellt, das sowohl eine performante, als auch eine flexible Bilddatenverarbeitung auf einem solchen System ermöglicht. Dieses Framework besteht aus verschiedenen Modulen zur Hardwarebeschleunigung und bindet diese nahtlos in den Datenfluss der On-Board Software ein. Dabei wird außerdem die Möglichkeit genutzt, die eingesetzten Virtex-4 FPGAs dynamisch zur Laufzeit zu rekonfigurieren. Die Flexibilität des vorgestellten Frameworks wird anhand mehrerer Fallbeispiele aus der Bildverarbeitung von PHI dargestellt.     GRAPE-5: A Special-Purpose Computer for N-body Simulation

    We have developed a special-purpose computer for gravitational many-body simulations, GRAPE-5. GRAPE-5 is the successor of GRAPE-3. Both consist of eight custom pipeline chips (G5 chip and GRAPE chip). The difference between GRAPE-5 and GRAPE-3 are: (1) The G5 chip contains two pipelines operating at 80 MHz, while the GRAPE chip had one at 20 MHz. Thus, the calculation speed of the G5 chip and that of GRAPE-5 board are 8 times faster than that of GRAPE chip and GRAPE-3 board. (2) The GRAPE-5 board adopted PCI bus as the interface to the host computer instead of VME of GRAPE-3, resulting in the communication speed one order of magnitude faster. (3) In addition to the pure 1/r potential, the G5 chip can calculate forces with arbitrary cutoff functions, so that it can be applied to Ewald or P^3M methods. (4) The pairwise force calculated on GRAPE-5 is about 10 times more accurate than that on GRAPE-3. On one GRAPE-5 board, one timestep of 128k-body simulation with direct summation algorithm takes 14 seconds. With Barnes-Hut tree algorithm (theta = 0.75), one timestep of 10^6-body simulation can be done in 16 seconds.Comment: 19 pages, 24 Postscript figures, 3 tables, Latex, submitted to Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japa

    The Spin Glass Phase in the Four-State, Three-Dimensional Potts Model

    We perform numerical simulations, including parallel tempering, on the Potts glass model with binary random quenched couplings using the JANUS application-oriented computer. We find and characterize a glassy transition, estimating the location of the transition and the value of the critical exponents. We show that there is no ferromagnetic transition in a large temperature range around the glassy critical temperature. We also compare our results with those obtained recently on the "random permutation" Potts glass.Comment: 7 pages and 3 figures. Corrected minor typo
