Shannon presented theoretical conditions under which communication was possible
error-free in the presence of noise. Subsequently the notion of using error
correcting codes to mitigate the effects of noise in digital transmission was introduced
by R. Hamming. Algebraic codes, codes described using powerful tools from
algebra took to the fore early on in the search for good error correcting codes. Many
classes of algebraic codes now exist and are known to have the best properties of
any known classes of codes. An error correcting code can be described by three of its
most important properties length, dimension and minimum distance. Given codes
with the same length and dimension, one with the largest minimum distance will
provide better error correction. As a result the research focuses on finding improved
codes with better minimum distances than any known codes.
Algebraic geometry codes are obtained from curves. They are a culmination of years
of research into algebraic codes and generalise most known algebraic codes. Additionally
they have exceptional distance properties as their lengths become arbitrarily
large. Algebraic geometry codes are studied in great detail with special attention
given to their construction and decoding. The practical performance of these codes
is evaluated and compared with previously known codes in different communication
channels. Furthermore many new codes that have better minimum distance
to the best known codes with the same length and dimension are presented from
a generalised construction of algebraic geometry codes. Goppa codes are also an
important class of algebraic codes. A construction of binary extended Goppa codes
is generalised to codes with nonbinary alphabets and as a result many new codes
are found. This construction is shown as an efficient way to extend another well
known class of algebraic codes, BCH codes. A generic method of shortening codes
whilst increasing the minimum distance is generalised. An analysis of this method
reveals a close relationship with methods of extending codes. Some new codes from
Goppa codes are found by exploiting this relationship. Finally an extension method
for BCH codes is presented and this method is shown be as good as a well known
method of extension in certain cases
This thesis focus on the interference cancellation problem for multiuser distributed
antenna systems. As such it starts by giving an overview of the
main properties of a distributed antenna system. This overview includes, an
analytical investigation of the impact of the connection of additional distributed
antennas, to the system users. That analysis shows that the most
important system property to reach the maximum gain, with the connection
of additional transmit antennas, is spatial symmetry and that the users at
the cell borders are the most bene ted. The multiuser interference problem
has been considered for both the one dimensional (i.e. without coding) and
multidimensional (i.e. with coding) cases. In the unidimensional case, we
propose and evaluate a nonlinear precoding algorithm for the minimization
of the bit-error-rate, of a multiuser MIMO system. Both the single-carrier
and multi-carrier cases are tackled as well as the co-located and distributed
scenarios. It is demonstrated that the proposed scheme can be viewed as an
extension of the well-known zero-forcing, whose performance is proven to be
a lower bound for the generalized scheme. The algorithm was validated extensively
through numerical simulations, which indicate a performance close
to the optimal, with reduced complexity. For the multi-dimensional case, a
binary dirty paper coding scheme, base on bilayer codes, is proposed. In the
development of this scheme, we consider the lossy compression of a binary
source as a sub-problem. Simulation results indicate reliable transmission
close to the Shannon limit

MATLAB
A well-known statement says that the PID controller is the "bread and butter" of the control engineer. This is indeed true, from a scientific standpoint. However, nowadays, in the era of computer science, when the paper and pencil have been replaced by the keyboard and the display of computers, one may equally say that MATLAB is the "bread" in the above statement. MATLAB has became a de facto tool for the modern system engineer. This book is written for both engineering students, as well as for practicing engineers. The wide range of applications in which MATLAB is the working framework, shows that it is a powerful, comprehensive and easy-to-use environment for performing technical computations. The book includes various excellent applications in which MATLAB is employed: from pure algebraic computations to data acquisition in real-life experiments, from control strategies to image processing algorithms, from graphical user interface design for educational purposes to Simulink embedded systems
Genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation topology to understand cell fate
DNA methylation is an epignetic modification associated with gene regulation. It has extensively been studied in the context of small regulatory regions. Yet, not so much is known about large domains characterized by fuzzy methylation patterns, termed Partially Methylated Domains (PMDs). The present thesis comprises PMD analyses in various contexts and provides several new aspects to study DNA methylation. First, a comprehensive analysis of PMDs across a large cohort of WGBS samples was performed, to identify structural and functional features associated with PMDs. A newly developed approach, ChromH3M, was proposed for the analysis and integration of a large spectrum of WGBS data sets. Second, PMDs were found to be indicators of the cellular proliferation history and segmented loss of DNA methylation in PMDs supports the sequential linear differentiation model of memory T-cells. Third, assessment of genome-wide methylation changes in PMDs of Multiple Sclerosis-discordant monozygotic co-twins did not show significant differences, but local changes (DMRs) were identified. Taken together, the outcomes of the presented studies shed light on a so far neglected aspect of DNA methylation, that is PMDs, in different contexts; lineage specialization, differentiation, replication, disease, chromatin organization and gene expression.
Crab and cockle shells as heterogeneous catalysts in the production of biodiesel
In the present study, the waste crab and cockle shells were utilized as source of calcium oxide to transesterify palm olein into methyl esters (biodiesel). Characterization results revealed that the main component of the shells are calcium carbonate which transformed into calcium oxide
upon activated above 700 °C for 2 h. Parametric studies have been investigated and optimal conditions were found to be catalyst amount, 5 wt.% and methanol/oil mass ratio, 0.5:1. The waste catalysts perform equally well as laboratory CaO, thus creating another low-cost catalyst source for producing biodiesel. Reusability results confirmed that the prepared catalyst is able to be reemployed up to five times. Statistical analysis has been
performed using a Central Composite Design to evaluate the contribution and performance of the
parameters on biodiesel purity
Molecular phylogeny of horseshoe crab using mitochondrial Cox1 gene as a benchmark sequence
An effort to assess the utility of 650 bp Cytochrome C
oxidase subunit I (DNA barcode) gene in delineating the members horseshoe crabs (Family: xiphosura) with closely related sister taxa was made. A total of 33 sequences were extracted from National Center for Biotechnological Information (NCBI) which include horseshoe crabs, beetles, common crabs and scorpion sequences. Constructed phylogram showed beetles are closely related with horseshoe crabs than
common crabs. Scorpion spp were distantly related to
xiphosurans. Phylogram and observed genetic distance (GD) date were also revealed that Limulus polyphemus was closely related with Tachypleus tridentatus than with T.gigas. Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda was distantly related with
L.polyphemus. The observed mean Genetic Distance (GD) value was higher in 3rd codon position in all the selected group of organisms. Among the horseshoe crabs high GC content was observed in L.polyphemus (38.32%) and lowest was observed in T.tridentatus (32.35%). We conclude that COI sequencing (barcoding) could be used in identifying and delineating evolutionary relatedness with closely related specie
