HbbTV-compliant Platform for Hybrid Media Delivery and Synchronization on Single- and Multi-Device Scenarios

[EN] The combination of broadcast and broadband (hybrid) technologies for delivering TV related media contents can bring fascinating opportunities. It is motivated by the large amount and diversity of media contents, together with the ubiquity and multiple connectivity capabilities of modern consumption devices. This paper presents an end-to-end platform for the preparation, delivery, and synchronized consumption of related hybrid (broadcast/broadband) media contents on a single device and/or on multiple close-by devices (i.e., a multi-device scenario). It is compatible with the latest version of the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) standard (version 2.0.1). Additionally, it provides adaptive and efficient solutions for key issues not specified in that standard, but that are necessary to successfully deploy hybrid and multidevice media services. Moreover, apart from MPEG-DASH and HTML5, which are the broadband technologies adopted by HbbTV, the platform also provides support for using HTTP Live Streaming and Real-time Transport Protocol and its companion RTP Control Protocol broadband technologies. The presented platform can provide support for many hybrid media services. In this paper, in order to evaluate it, the use case of multi-device and multi-view TV service has been selected. The results of both objective and subjective assessments have been very satisfactory, in terms of performance (stability, smooth playout, delays, and sync accuracy), usability of the platform, usefulness of its functionalities, and the awaken interest in these kinds of platforms. This work was supported in part by the "Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional" and in part by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through R&D&I Support Program under Grant TEC2013-45492-R.Boronat, F.; Marfil-Reguero, D.; Montagud, M.; Pastor Castillo, FJ. Development of an integrated interface between SAGE and Ultragrid

In this document the Master thesis called “Development of an integrated interface between SAGE and Ultragrid” is presented. During this document, new users’ and companies’ necessities, that come from the knowledge sharing to the productivity improvements, in the scope of the advanced tools for videoconferencing are set out. From these new necessities and after the analysis of the state of the art in videoconference and high definition, a new technological challenge to solve these necessities appears. During the master a novel design is set out, a design for a new kind of High Definition (uncompressed HD-SDI) videoconferencing system fully adaptable and scalable. By joining different technologies of distributed visualization and technologies of advanced streaming of high definition audiovisual contents over IP networks, a new prototype has been deployed, able to solve the new technological requirements. The new deployed system is able to visualize several HD-SDI streams simultaneously in a unique application. Also the new transmission/visualization module, allows to divide the HD-SDI stream in different self-content substreams, in order to give to the receptor user the possibility to choose, according his capabilities, the number of sub-streams that will be able to receive and process. This procedure will allow the user to always work with the best quality he is able to. The result of the thesis has been a high definition multi-videoconference low latency system, able to work point to multi-point where each user receive different resolutions, without transcoding. Finally, the obtained results have been analyzed, opening new research lines, and possible system improvements has been raised

Web-based Stereoscopic Collaboration for Medical Visualization

Development And Validation Of The Beile Test Of Information Literacy For Education (b-tiled)

Few constituencies exist where it is more important to produce information literate individuals than teacher candidates, yet rarely is it suggested that practitioners entering the field are adequately prepared to teach and model information literacy to their students. As a result, information literacy has been established as a key outcome by a number of teacher education accrediting bodies and professional associations. Corollary to this initiative is the effort to develop valid instruments that assess information literacy skills. Yet, at the time of this dissertation, no rigorously reviewed instruments were uncovered that measure the information literacy skills levels of teacher candidates. The study describes the development and validation of the Beile Test of Information Literacy for Education (B-TILED). Funded in part by the Institute for Library and Information Literacy Education and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the study is part of a national initiative spear-headed by the Project for the Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS). Test content is based on nationally recognized standards from the International Society for Technology in Education and the Association of College and Research Libraries. Procedures designed to enhance the scale\u27s validity were woven throughout its development. 172 teacher education students at a large, metropolitan university completed a protocol consisting of 22 test items and 13 demographic and self-percept items. This instrument can be used to inform curricular and instructional decisions and to provide evidence of institutional effectiveness for program reviews
