    Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age

    Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications, and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees, active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and Is SLAM solved

    Control of autonomous multibody vehicles using artificial intelligence

    The field of autonomous driving has been evolving rapidly within the last few years and a lot of research has been dedicated towards the control of autonomous vehicles, especially car-like ones. Due to the recent successes of artificial intelligence techniques, even more complex problems can be solved, such as the control of autonomous multibody vehicles. Multibody vehicles can accomplish transportation tasks in a faster and cheaper way compared to multiple individual mobile vehicles or robots. But even for a human, driving a truck-trailer is a challenging task. This is because of the complex structure of the vehicle and the maneuvers that it has to perform, such as reverse parking to a loading dock. In addition, the detailed technical solution for an autonomous truck is challenging and even though many single-domain solutions are available, e.g. for pathplanning, no holistic framework exists. Also, from the control point of view, designing such a controller is a high complexity problem, which makes it a widely used benchmark. In this thesis, a concept for a plurality of tasks is presented. In contrast to most of the existing literature, a holistic approach is developed which combines many stand-alone systems to one entire framework. The framework consists of a plurality of modules, such as modeling, pathplanning, training for neural networks, controlling, jack-knife avoidance, direction switching, simulation, visualization and testing. There are model-based and model-free control approaches and the system comprises various pathplanning methods and target types. It also accounts for noisy sensors and the simulation of whole environments. To achieve superior performance, several modules had to be developed, redesigned and interlinked with each other. A pathplanning module with multiple available methods optimizes the desired position by also providing an efficient implementation for trajectory following. Classical approaches, such as optimal control (LQR) and model predictive control (MPC) can safely control a truck with a given model. Machine learning based approaches, such as deep reinforcement learning, are designed, implemented, trained and tested successfully. Furthermore, the switching of the driving direction is enabled by continuous analysis of a cost function to avoid collisions and improve driving behavior. This thesis introduces a working system of all integrated modules. The system proposed can complete complex scenarios, including situations with buildings and partial trajectories. In thousands of simulations, the system using the LQR controller or the reinforcement learning agent had a success rate of >95 % in steering a truck with one trailer, even with added noise. For the development of autonomous vehicles, the implementation of AI at scale is important. This is why a digital twin of the truck-trailer is used to simulate the full system at a much higher speed than one can collect data in real life.Tesi

    Brachiating power line inspection robot: controller design and implementation

    The prevalence of electrical transmission networks has led to an increase in productivity and prosperity. In 2014, estimates showed that the global electric power transmission network consisted of 5.5 million circuit kilometres (Ckm) of high-voltage transmission lines with a combined capacity of 17 million mega-volt ampere. The vastness of the global transmission grid presents a significant problem for infrastructure maintenance. The high maintenance costs, coupled with challenging terrain, provide an opportunity for autonomous inspection robots. The Brachiating Power Line Inspection Robot (BPLIR) with wheels [73] is a transmission line inspection robot. The BPLIR is the focus of this research and this dissertation tackles the problem of state estimation, adaptive trajectory generation and robust control for the BPLIR. A kinematics-based Kalman Filter state estimator was designed and implemented to determine the full system state. Instrumentation used for measurement consisted of 2 Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs). The advantages of utilising IMUs is that they are less susceptible to drift, have no moving parts and are not prone to misalignment errors. The use of IMU's in the design meant that absolute angles (link angles measured with respect to earth) could be estimated, enabling the BPLIR to navigate inclined slopes. Quantitative Feedback Control theory was employed to address the issue of parameter uncertainty during operation. The operating environment of the BPLIR requires it to be robust to environmental factors such as wind disturbance and uncertainty in joint friction over time. The resulting robust control system was able to compensate for uncertain system parameters and reject disturbances in simulation. An online trajectory generator (OTG), inspired by Raibert-style reverse-time symmetry[10], fed into the control system to drive the end effector to the power line by employing brachiation. The OTG produced two trajectories; one of which was reverse time symmetrical and; another which minimised the perpendicular distance between the end gripper and the power line. Linear interpolation between the two trajectories ensured a smooth bump-less trajectory for the BPLIR to follow

    Optimization-based iterative learning for precise quadrocopter trajectory tracking

    Current control systems regulate the behavior of dynamic systems by reacting to noise and unexpected disturbances as they occur. To improve the performance of such control systems, experience from iterative executions can be used to anticipate recurring disturbances and proactively compensate for them. This paper presents an algorithm that exploits data from previous repetitions in order to learn to precisely follow a predefined trajectory. We adapt the feed-forward input signal to the system with the goal of achieving high tracking performance—even under the presence of model errors and other recurring disturbances. The approach is based on a dynamics model that captures the essential features of the system and that explicitly takes system input and state constraints into account. We combine traditional optimal filtering methods with state-of-the-art optimization techniques in order to obtain an effective and computationally efficient learning strategy that updates the feed-forward input signal according to a customizable learning objective. It is possible to define a termination condition that stops an execution early if the deviation from the nominal trajectory exceeds a given bound. This allows for a safe learning that gradually extends the time horizon of the trajectory. We developed a framework for generating arbitrary flight trajectories and for applying the algorithm to highly maneuverable autonomous quadrotor vehicles in the ETH Flying Machine Arena testbed.     L'intelligence artificielle (IA) moderne a ouvert de nouvelles perspectives prometteuses pour la création de robots intelligents. En particulier, les architectures d'apprentissage basées sur le gradient (réseaux neuronaux profonds) ont considérablement amélioré la compréhension des scènes 3D en termes de perception, de raisonnement et d'action. Cependant, ces progrès ont affaibli l'attrait de nombreuses techniques ``classiques'' développées au cours des dernières décennies. Nous postulons qu'un mélange de méthodes ``classiques'' et ``apprises'' est la voie la plus prometteuse pour développer des modèles du monde flexibles, interprétables et exploitables : une nécessité pour les agents intelligents incorporés. La question centrale de cette thèse est : ``Quelle est la manière idéale de combiner les techniques classiques avec des architectures d'apprentissage basées sur le gradient pour une compréhension riche du monde 3D ?''. Cette vision ouvre la voie à une multitude d'applications qui ont un impact fondamental sur la façon dont les agents physiques perçoivent et interagissent avec leur environnement. Cette thèse, appelée ``programmes différentiables pour modèler l'environnement'', unifie les efforts de plusieurs domaines étroitement liés mais actuellement disjoints, notamment la robotique, la vision par ordinateur, l'infographie et l'IA. Ma première contribution---gradSLAM--- est un système de localisation et de cartographie simultanées (SLAM) dense et entièrement différentiable. En permettant le calcul du gradient à travers des composants autrement non différentiables tels que l'optimisation non linéaire par moindres carrés, le raycasting, l'odométrie visuelle et la cartographie dense, gradSLAM ouvre de nouvelles voies pour intégrer la reconstruction 3D classique et l'apprentissage profond. Ma deuxième contribution - taskography - propose une sparsification conditionnée par la tâche de grandes scènes 3D encodées sous forme de graphes de scènes 3D. Cela permet aux planificateurs classiques d'égaler (et de surpasser) les planificateurs de pointe basés sur l'apprentissage en concentrant le calcul sur les attributs de la scène pertinents pour la tâche. Ma troisième et dernière contribution---gradSim--- est un simulateur entièrement différentiable qui combine des moteurs physiques et graphiques différentiables pour permettre l'estimation des paramètres physiques et le contrôle visuomoteur, uniquement à partir de vidéos ou d'une image fixe.Modern artificial intelligence (AI) has created exciting new opportunities for building intelligent robots. In particular, gradient-based learning architectures (deep neural networks) have tremendously improved 3D scene understanding in terms of perception, reasoning, and action. However, these advancements have undermined many ``classical'' techniques developed over the last few decades. We postulate that a blend of ``classical'' and ``learned'' methods is the most promising path to developing flexible, interpretable, and actionable models of the world: a necessity for intelligent embodied agents. ``What is the ideal way to combine classical techniques with gradient-based learning architectures for a rich understanding of the 3D world?'' is the central question in this dissertation. This understanding enables a multitude of applications that fundamentally impact how embodied agents perceive and interact with their environment. This dissertation, dubbed ``differentiable world programs'', unifies efforts from multiple closely-related but currently-disjoint fields including robotics, computer vision, computer graphics, and AI. Our first contribution---gradSLAM---is a fully differentiable dense simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system. By enabling gradient computation through otherwise non-differentiable components such as nonlinear least squares optimization, ray casting, visual odometry, and dense mapping, gradSLAM opens up new avenues for integrating classical 3D reconstruction and deep learning. Our second contribution---taskography---proposes a task-conditioned sparsification of large 3D scenes encoded as 3D scene graphs. This enables classical planners to match (and surpass) state-of-the-art learning-based planners by focusing computation on task-relevant scene attributes. Our third and final contribution---gradSim---is a fully differentiable simulator that composes differentiable physics and graphics engines to enable physical parameter estimation and visuomotor control, solely from videos or a still image
