    Users manual for the Automated Performance Test System (APTS)

    The characteristics of and the user information for the Essex Automated Performance Test System (APTS) computer-based portable performance assessment battery are given. The battery was developed to provide a menu of performance test tapping the widest possible variety of human cognitive and motor functions, implemented on a portable computer system suitable for use in both laboratory and field settings for studying the effects of toxic agents and other stressors. The manual gives guidance in selecting, administering and scoring tests from the battery, and reviews the data and studies underlying the development of the battery. Its main emphasis is on the users of the battery - the scientists, researchers and technicians who wish to examine changes in human performance across time or as a function of changes in the conditions under which test data are obtained. First the how to information needed to make decisions about where and how to use the battery is given, followed by the research background supporting the battery development. Further, the development history of the battery focuses largely on the logical framework within which tests were evaluated

    Microcomputer-based tests for repeated-measures: Metric properties and predictive validities

    A menu of psychomotor and mental acuity tests were refined. Field applications of such a battery are, for example, a study of the effects of toxic agents or exotic environments on performance readiness, or the determination of fitness for duty. The key requirement of these tasks is that they be suitable for repeated-measures applications, and so questions of stability and reliability are a continuing, central focus of this work. After the initial (practice) session, seven replications of 14 microcomputer-based performance tests (32 measures) were completed by 37 subjects. Each test in the battery had previously been shown to stabilize in less than five 90-second administrations and to possess retest reliabilities greater than r = 0.707 for three minutes of testing. However, all the tests had never been administered together as a battery and they had never been self-administered. In order to provide predictive validity for intelligence measurement, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised and the Wonderlic Personnel Test were obtained on the same subjects

    A Comprehensive Evaluation Model for Cumputer Based Educaton

    As opportunities to use computers in learning laboratory settings increase,directors will be faced with the problem of assisting faculty to select and evaluate themost appropriate courseware for their needs. This article presents a comprehensiveevaluation model that could be applied for computer based education programs in avariety of arts and sciences areas. The model includes a pre-implementation stage.This stage determines program compatibility, content evaluation and hardwareconsiderations. A second stage considers formative evaluation, continued availabilityof equipment and the recording of time records. Finally, the last phase, summativeevaluation, includes collecting student attitudes, assessing cost effectiveness,determining external influences and finally, suggesting ways of reaching a decision ofworth. The implementation of this model should provide a system where studentscould work with computer programs of a proven quality. Also, learning laboratorydirectors and faculty could show a certain level of accountability towards spendingmoney on computer software or courseware

    Computer literacy levels and attitudes towards computers of California school site adminstrators

    Purpose: The purpose of the study was to quantify and analyze the computer literacy levels and attitudes towards computers of school site administrators, and thereby establish a baseline of knowledge for future decisions regarding the integration of computers in education. Procedure: A fifty item survey, based on objectives supplied by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium, was developed. The items were designed to assess experiences, attitudes and knowledge relative to computers. The survey was sent to a random sample of 603 California school site administrators functioning in unified school districts. Responses to research questions were based on appropriate statistical procedures including one-way analyses of variance and Pearson correlations. Findings: Fifty-four percent of the surveys were returned. A majoiity of the administrators have used the computer at least once in their career. Workshops and self-directed study experiences were identified as being the most useful type of exposure to computers. Administrators indicated a substantial amount of support for computers in education, both for students and peers. Administrators expressed some uncertainty about their ability to make decisions regarding computers at their school. There was little difference observed in computer literacy levels and attitudes of administrators from various regions of the state, levels of administration, or ranges of district ADA. A positive correlation was found to exist between attitudes and computer literacy levels. Recommendations: Administrator preservice training should include the educational use of computers. School districts should pursue an inservice program designed to give staff members experience with computers. A study is needed to review the availability and quality of computer related college courses for educators. A study should be conducted to determine the differences in computer literacy levels and attitudes of administrators with varying experiences. This study should be replicated with administrators classified by sex, years of administrative experience and school setting. A comparative analysis of preservice and practicing administrator computer literacy levels and attitudes should be conducted. A longitudinal study should be conducted, utilizing a modified form of the survey developed in this research project

    Three emerging technologies in physics education are evaluated from the interdisciplinary perspective of cognitive science and physics education research. The technologies - Physlet Physics, the Andes Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), and Microcomputer-Based Laboratory (MBL) Tools - are assessed particularly in terms of their potential at promoting conceptual change, developing expert-like problem-solving skills, and achieving the goals of the traditional physics laboratory.     Surrogate measures: A proposed alternative in human factors assessment of operational measures of performance

    Surrogate measures are proposed as an alternative to direct assessment of operational performance for purposes of screening agents who may have to work under unusual stresses or in exotic environments. Such measures are particularly proposed when the surrogate can be empirically validated against the operational criterion. The focus is on cognitive (or throughput) performances in humans as opposed to sensory (input) or motor (output) measures, but the methods should be applicable for development of batteries which will tap input/output functions. A menu of performance tasks is under development for implementation on a battery-operated portable microcomputer, with 21 tests currently available. The tasks are reliable and become stable in minimum amounts of time; appear sensitive to some agents; comprise constructs related to actual job tasks; and are easily administered in most environments. Implications for human factors engineering studies in environmental stress are discussed

    Organizational consequences linked to the incorporation of ERP into companies' service-marketing activities

    ERPs offer a two-fold answer to the need for integration. The first is technical in nature, since the architecture of these programs is designed to ensure the compatibility of their software components and the transparency of their data. They also offer a dynamic approach, because ERPs are mechanisms for incorporating a company's specific functional elements. However, the ERP solution cannot replace every existing management computing system. Accordingly, applying ERP to existing systems will have a significant cost, whether it occurs in the implementation of ERP itself or in the work of making over the firm's own information system. The field surveys that have been carried out show that good management practices already included in non-ERP computing systems can easily be transposed into ERP systems. Conversely, applications that do not follow a horizontal management structure create incompatibilities if we attempt to transfer them into an ERP. The influence of the firm's structure on the implementation of ERP will depend on how compatible it is with the underlying structure of the ERP (structure must follow strategy: A.     Microgravity effects on standardized cognitive performance measures

    The purpose of this experiment, selected to fly on the International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2) Spacelab mission, is to determine the effects of microgravity upon the cognitive skills which are critical to successful performance of many tasks on board the Space Shuttle. Six tests from the Unified Tri-service Cognitive Performance Assessment Battery (UTC-PAB) will be administered to the Mission Specialists to fulfill the goals of this experiment. These tests are based upon current theoretical models of human performance and the hypothesized effects of microgravity. The principle objective is the identification of the effects of microgravity upon specific information processing skills affecting performance from those of fatigue and shifts in work/rest cycles. Multiple measures of both short and long term fatigue will be obtained and used as a major independent variable for the analysis of these performance data. Scientific supporting studies will determine optimum practice and performance testing schedules for the astronauts. The same tests will be used post-flight to collect data on the recovery of any cognitive performance impairment compared with pre-flight, baseline levels

    Analysis and design of a two-speed single-phase induction motor with 2 and 18 pole special windings

    The motor presented employs multiple independent windings for operation with two very different pole numbers. The 18-pole field is produced with a symmetrical three-phase winding connected in a Steinmetz arrangement to a single-phase supply. A unified analysis method has been developed and used to demonstrate the equivalence of a Steinmetz delta or star connection with a main and auxiliary winding of a single-phase motor. The method has been experimentally validated and also included are some specific motor design considerations
