    A Robot-Sensor Network Security Architecture for Monitoring Applications

    This paper presents SNSR (Sensor Network Security using Robots), a novel, open, and flexible architecture that improves security in static sensor networks by benefiting from robot-sensor network cooperation. In SNSR, the robot performs sensor node authentication and radio-based localization (enabling centralized topology computation and route establishment) and directly interacts with nodes to send them configurations or receive status and anomaly reports without intermediaries. SNSR operation is divided into stages set in a feedback iterative structure, which enables repeating the execution of stages to adapt to changes, respond to attacks, or detect and correct errors. By exploiting the robot capabilities, SNSR provides high security levels and adaptability without requiring complex mechanisms.     Cooperative relay selection for load balancing with mobility in hierarchical WSNs: A multi-armed bandit approach

    © 2013 IEEE. Energy efficiency is the major concern in hierarchical wireless sensor networks(WSNs), where the major energy consumption originates from radios for communication. Due to notable energy expenditure of long-range transmission for cluster members and data aggregation for Cluster Head (CH), saving and balancing energy consumption is a tricky challenge in WSNs. In this paper, we design a CH selection mechanism with a mobile sink (MS) while proposing relay selection algorithms with multi-user multi-armed bandit (UM-MAB) to solve the problem of energy efficiency. According to the definition of node density and residual energy, we propose a conception referred to as a Virtual Head (VH) for MS to collect data in terms of energy efficiency. Moreover, we naturally change the relay selection problem into permutation problem through employing the two-hop transmission in cooperative power line communication, which deals with long-distance transmission. As far as the relay selection problem is concerned, we propose the machine learning algorithm, namely MU-MAB, to solve it through the reward associated with an increment for energy consumption. Furthermore, we employ the stable matching theory based on marginal utility for the allocation of the final one-to-one optimal combinations to achieve energy efficiency. In order to evaluate MU-MAB, the regret is taken advantage to demonstrate the performance by using upper confidence bound (UCB) index. In the end, simulation results illustrate the efficacy and effectiveness of our proposed solutions for saving and balancing energy consumption

    Routing schemes in FANETs: a survey

    Flying ad hoc network (FANET) is a self-organizing wireless network that enables inexpensive, flexible, and easy-to-deploy flying nodes, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to communicate among themselves in the absence of fixed network infrastructure. FANET is one of the emerging networks that has an extensive range of next-generation applications. Hence, FANET plays a significant role in achieving application-based goals. Routing enables the flying nodes to collaborate and coordinate among themselves and to establish routes to radio access infrastructure, particularly FANET base station (BS). With a longer route lifetime, the effects of link disconnections and network partitions reduce. Routing must cater to two main characteristics of FANETs that reduce the route lifetime. Firstly, the collaboration nature requires the flying nodes to exchange messages and to coordinate among themselves, causing high energy consumption. Secondly, the mobility pattern of the flying nodes is highly dynamic in a three-dimensional space and they may be spaced far apart, causing link disconnection. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the limited research work of routing schemes in FANETs.     A Survey and Future Directions on Clustering: From WSNs to IoT and Modern Networking Paradigms

    Many Internet of Things (IoT) networks are created as an overlay over traditional ad-hoc networks such as Zigbee. Moreover, IoT networks can resemble ad-hoc networks over networks that support device-to-device (D2D) communication, e.g., D2D-enabled cellular networks and WiFi-Direct. In these ad-hoc types of IoT networks, efficient topology management is a crucial requirement, and in particular in massive scale deployments. Traditionally, clustering has been recognized as a common approach for topology management in ad-hoc networks, e.g., in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Topology management in WSNs and ad-hoc IoT networks has many design commonalities as both need to transfer data to the destination hop by hop. Thus, WSN clustering techniques can presumably be applied for topology management in ad-hoc IoT networks. This requires a comprehensive study on WSN clustering techniques and investigating their applicability to ad-hoc IoT networks. In this article, we conduct a survey of this field based on the objectives for clustering, such as reducing energy consumption and load balancing, as well as the network properties relevant for efficient clustering in IoT, such as network heterogeneity and mobility. Beyond that, we investigate the advantages and challenges of clustering when IoT is integrated with modern computing and communication technologies such as Blockchain, Fog/Edge computing, and 5G.     An Internet of Things (IoT) based wide-area Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) platform with mobility support.

    Wide-area remote monitoring applications use cellular networks or satellite links to transfer sensor data to the central storage. Remote monitoring applications uses Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) to accommodate more Sensor Nodes (SNs) and for better management. Internet of Things (IoT) network connects the WSN with the data storage and other application specific services using the existing internet infrastructure. Both cellular networks, such as the Narrow-Band IoT (NB-IoT), and satellite links will not be suitable for point-to-point connections of the SNs due to their lack of coverage, high cost, and energy requirement. Low Power Wireless Area Network (LPWAN) is used to interconnect all the SNs and accumulate the data to a single point, called Gateway, before sending it to the IoT network. WSN implements clustering of the SNs to increase the network coverage and utilizes multiple wireless links between the repeater nodes (called hops) to reach the gateway at a longer distance. Clustered WSN can cover up to a few km using the LPWAN technologies such as Zigbee using multiple hops. Each Zigbee link can be from 200 m to 500 m long. Other LPWAN technologies, such as LoRa, can facilitate an extended range from 1km to 15km. However, the LoRa will not be suitable for the clustered WSN due to its long Time on Air (TOA) which will introduce data transmission delay and become severe with the increase of hop count. Besides, a sensor node will need to increase the antenna height to achieve the long-range benefit of Lora using a single link (hop) instead of using multiple hops to cover the same range. With the increased WSN coverage area, remote monitoring applications such as smart farming may require mobile sensor nodes. This research focuses on the challenges to overcome LoRa’s limitations (long TOA and antenna height) and accommodation of mobility in a high-density and wide-area WSN for future remote monitoring applications. Hence, this research proposes lightweight communication protocols and networking algorithms using LoRa to achieve mobility, energy efficiency and wider coverage of up to a few hundred km for the WSN. This thesis is divided into four parts. It presents two data transmission protocols for LoRa to achieve a higher data rate and wider network coverage, one networking algorithm for wide-area WSN and a channel synchronization algorithm to improve the data rate of LoRa links. Part one presents a lightweight data transmission protocol for LoRa using a mobile data accumulator (called data sink) to increase the monitoring coverage area and data transmission energy efficiency. The proposed Lightweight Dynamic Auto Reconfigurable Protocol (LDAP) utilizes direct or single hop to transmit data from the SNs using one of them as the repeater node. Wide-area remote monitoring applications such as Water Quality Monitoring (WQM) can acquire data from geographically distributed water resources using LDAP, and a mobile Data Sink (DS) mounted on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The proposed LDAP can acquire data from a minimum of 147 SNs covering 128 km in one direction reducing the DS requirement down to 5% comparing other WSNs using Zigbee for the same coverage area with static DS. Applications like smart farming and environmental monitoring may require mobile sensor nodes (SN) and data sinks (DS). The WSNs for these applications will require real-time network management algorithms and routing protocols for the dynamic WSN with mobility that is not feasible using static WSN technologies. This part proposes a lightweight clustering algorithm for the dynamic WSN (with mobility) utilizing the proposed LDAP to form clusters in real-time during the data accumulation by the mobile DS. The proposed Lightweight Dynamic Clustering Algorithm (LDCA) can form real-time clusters consisting of mobile or stationary SNs using mobile DS or static GW. WSN using LoRa and LDCA increases network capacity and coverage area reducing the required number of DS. It also reduces clustering energy to 33% and shows clustering efficiency of up to 98% for single-hop clustering covering 100 SNs. LoRa is not suitable for a clustered WSN with multiple hops due to its long TOA, depending on the LoRa link configurations (bandwidth and spreading factor). This research proposes a channel synchronization algorithm to improve the data rate of the LoRa link by combining multiple LoRa radio channels in a single logical channel. This increased data rate will enhance the capacity of the clusters in the WSN supporting faster clustering with mobile sensor nodes and data sink. Along with the LDCA, the proposed Lightweight Synchronization Algorithm for Quasi-orthogonal LoRa channels (LSAQ) facilitating multi-hop data transfer increases WSN capacity and coverage area. This research investigates quasi-orthogonality features of LoRa in terms of radio channel frequency, spreading factor (SF) and bandwidth. It derived mathematical models to obtain the optimal LoRa parameters for parallel data transmission using multiple SFs and developed a synchronization algorithm for LSAQ. The proposed LSAQ achieves up to a 46% improvement in network capacity and 58% in data rate compared with the WSN using the traditional LoRa Medium Access Control (MAC) layer protocols. Besides the high-density clustered WSN, remote monitoring applications like plant phenotyping may require transferring image or high-volume data using LoRa links. Wireless data transmission protocols used for high-volume data transmission using the link with a low data rate (like LoRa) requiring multiple packets create a significant amount of packet overload. Besides, the reliability of these data transmission protocols is highly dependent on acknowledgement (ACK) messages creating extra load on overall data transmission and hence reducing the application-specific effective data rate (goodput). This research proposes an application layer protocol to improve the goodput while transferring an image or sequential data over the LoRa links in the WSN. It uses dynamic acknowledgement (DACK) protocol for the LoRa physical layer to reduce the ACK message overhead. DACK uses end-of-transmission ACK messaging and transmits multiple packets as a block. It retransmits missing packets after receiving the ACK message at the end of multiple blocks. The goodput depends on the block size and the number of lossy packets that need to be retransmitted. It shows that the DACK LoRa can reduce the total ACK time 10 to 30 times comparing stop-wait protocol and ten times comparing multi-packet ACK protocol. The focused wide-area WSN and mobility requires different matrices to be evaluated. The performance evaluation matrices used for the static WSN do not consider the mobility and the related parameters, such as clustering efficiency in the network and hence cannot evaluate the performance of the proposed wide-area WSN platform supporting mobility. Therefore, new, and modified performance matrices are proposed to measure dynamic performance. It can measure the real-time clustering performance using the mobile data sink and sensor nodes, the cluster size, the coverage area of the WSN and more.     Enhanced stability of cluster-based location service mechanism for urban vehicular ad hoc networks

    Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are gaining tremendous research interest in developing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for smart cities. The position of vehicles plays a significant role in ITS applications and services such as public emergency, vehicles tracking, resource discovery, traffic monitoring and position-based routing. The location service is used to keep up-to-date records of current positions of vehicles. A review of previous literatures, found various locationbased service mechanisms have been proposed to manage the position of vehicles. The cluster-based location service mechanisms have achieved growing attention due to their advantages such as scalability, reliability and reduced communication overhead. However, the performance of the cluster-based location service mechanism depends on the stability of the cluster, and the stability of the cluster depends on the stability of the Cluster Head (CH), Cluster Member (CM) and cluster maintenance. In the existing cluster-based location service schemes, the issue of CH instability arises due to the non-optimal cluster formation range and unreliable communication link with Road Side Unit (RSU). The non-optimal cluster formation range causes CH instability due to lack of uniqueness of Centroid Vehicle (CV), uncertainty of participating vehicles in the CH election process and unreliability of the Cluster Head Election Value (CHEV). Also, the unreliable link with RSU does not guarantee that CH is stable with respect to its CMs and RSU simultaneously. The issue of CM instability in the existing cluster-based location service schemes occurs due to using instantaneous speed of the CH and fixed CM affiliation threshold values. The instantaneous speed causes the CM to switch the clusters frequently and fixed CM affiliation threshold values increase isolated vehicles. The frequent switching of isolated vehicles augment the CM instability. Moreover, the inefficient cluster maintenance due to non-optimal cluster merging and cluster splitting also contributes to cluster instability. The merging conditions such as fixed merging threshold time and uncertain movement of overlapping CHs within merging threshold time cause the cluster instability. Furthermore, the unnecessary clustering during cluster splitting around the intersection due to CH election parameters also increases cluster instability. Therefore, to address the aforementioned cluster instability issues, Enhanced Stability of Cluster-based Location Service (ESCLS) mechanism was proposed for urban VANETs. The proposed ESCLS mechanism consists of three complementary schemes which are Reliable Cluster Head Election (RCHE), Dynamic Cumulative Cluster Member Affiliation (DCCMA) and Optimized Cluster Maintenance (OCM). Firstly, the aim of the RCHE scheme was to enhance the stability of the CH through optimizing the cluster formation range and by considering communication link reliability with the RSU. Secondly, the DCCMA scheme focussed on improving the stability of the CMs by considering the Cumulative Moving Average Speed (CMAS) of the CH and dynamic CM affiliation threshold values, and finally, the OCM scheme enhanced the cluster stability by improving cluster merging conditions and reducing unnecessary clustering in cluster splitting. The results of the simulation verified the improved performance of the ESCLS in terms of increasing the location query success rate by 34%, and decreasing the query response delay and localization error by 24% and 35% respectively as compared to the existing cluster-based location service schemes such as HCBLS, CBLS and MoGLS. In conclusion, it is proven that ESCLS is a suitable location service mechanism for a wide range of position-based applications of VANETs that require timely and accurate vehicle locations

    The recent development in wireless networks and devices has led to novel services that will utilize wireless communication on a new level. Much effort and resources have been dedicated to establishing new communication networks that will support machine-to-machine communication and the Internet of Things (IoT). In these systems, various smart and sensory devices are deployed and connected, enabling large amounts of data to be streamed. Smart services represent new trends in mobile services, i.e., a completely new spectrum of context-aware, personalized, and intelligent services and applications. A variety of existing services utilize information about the position of the user or mobile device. The position of mobile devices is often achieved using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) chips that are integrated into all modern mobile devices (smartphones). However, GNSS is not always a reliable source of position estimates due to multipath propagation and signal blockage. Moreover, integrating GNSS chips into all devices might have a negative impact on the battery life of future IoT applications. Therefore, alternative solutions to position estimation should be investigated and implemented in IoT applications.     Cognitive networking for next generation of cellular communication systems

    This thesis presents a comprehensive study of cognitive networking for cellular networks with contributions that enable them to be more dynamic, agile, and efficient. To achieve this, machine learning (ML) algorithms, a subset of artificial intelligence, are employed to bring such cognition to cellular networks. More specifically, three major branches of ML, namely supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning (RL), are utilised for various purposes: unsupervised learning is used for data clustering, while supervised learning is employed for predictions on future behaviours of networks/users. RL, on the other hand, is utilised for optimisation purposes due to its inherent characteristics of adaptability and requiring minimal knowledge of the environment. Energy optimisation, capacity enhancement, and spectrum access are identified as primary design challenges for cellular networks given that they are envisioned to play crucial roles for 5G and beyond due to the increased demand in the number of connected devices as well as data rates. Each design challenge and its corresponding proposed solution are discussed thoroughly in separate chapters. Regarding energy optimisation, a user-side energy consumption is investigated by considering Internet of things (IoT) networks. An RL based intelligent model, which jointly optimises the wireless connection type and data processing entity, is proposed. In particular, a Q-learning algorithm is developed, through which the energy consumption of an IoT device is minimised while keeping the requirement of the applications--in terms of response time and security--satisfied. The proposed methodology manages to result in 0% normalised joint cost--where all the considered metrics are combined--while the benchmarks performed 54.84% on average. Next, the energy consumption of radio access networks (RANs) is targeted, and a traffic-aware cell switching algorithm is designed to reduce the energy consumption of a RAN without compromising on the user quality-of-service (QoS). The proposed technique employs a SARSA algorithm with value function approximation, since the conventional RL methods struggle with solving problems with huge state spaces. The results reveal that up to 52% gain on the total energy consumption is achieved with the proposed technique, and the gain is observed to reduce when the scenario becomes more realistic. On the other hand, capacity enhancement is studied from two different perspectives, namely mobility management and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assistance. Towards that end, a predictive handover (HO) mechanism is designed for mobility management in cellular networks by identifying two major issues of Markov chains based HO predictions. First, revisits--which are defined as a situation whereby a user visits the same cell more than once within the same day--are diagnosed as causing similar transition probabilities, which in turn increases the likelihood of making incorrect predictions. This problem is addressed with a structural change; i.e., rather than storing 2-D transition matrix, it is proposed to store 3-D one that also includes HO orders. The obtained results show that 3-D transition matrix is capable of reducing the HO signalling cost by up to 25.37%, which is observed to drop with increasing randomness level in the data set. Second, making a HO prediction with insufficient criteria is identified as another issue with the conventional Markov chains based predictors. Thus, a prediction confidence level is derived, such that there should be a lower bound to perform HO predictions, which are not always advantageous owing to the HO signalling cost incurred from incorrect predictions. The outcomes of the simulations confirm that the derived confidence level mechanism helps in improving the prediction accuracy by up to 8.23%. Furthermore, still considering capacity enhancement, a UAV assisted cellular networking is considered, and an unsupervised learning-based UAV positioning algorithm is presented. A comprehensive analysis is conducted on the impacts of the overlapping footprints of multiple UAVs, which are controlled by their altitudes. The developed k-means clustering based UAV positioning approach is shown to reduce the number of users in outage by up to 80.47% when compared to the benchmark symmetric deployment. Lastly, a QoS-aware dynamic spectrum access approach is developed in order to tackle challenges related to spectrum access, wherein all the aforementioned types of ML methods are employed. More specifically, by leveraging future traffic load predictions of radio access technologies (RATs) and Q-learning algorithm, a novel proactive spectrum sensing technique is introduced. As such, two different sensing strategies are developed; the first one focuses solely on sensing latency reduction, while the second one jointly optimises sensing latency and user requirements. In particular, the proposed Q-learning algorithm takes the future load predictions of the RATs and the requirements of secondary users--in terms of mobility and bandwidth--as inputs and directs the users to the spectrum of the optimum RAT to perform sensing. The strategy to be employed can be selected based on the needs of the applications, such that if the latency is the only concern, the first strategy should be selected due to the fact that the second strategy is computationally more demanding. However, by employing the second strategy, sensing latency is reduced while satisfying other user requirements. The simulation results demonstrate that, compared to random sensing, the first strategy decays the sensing latency by 85.25%, while the second strategy enhances the full-satisfaction rate, where both mobility and bandwidth requirements of the user are simultaneously satisfied, by 95.7%. Therefore, as it can be observed, three key design challenges of the next generation of cellular networks are identified and addressed via the concept of cognitive networking, providing a utilitarian tool for mobile network operators to plug into their systems.
