    Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar and Video Fusion for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

    There has been a push recently to develop technology to enable the use of UAVs in GPS-denied environments. As UAVs become smaller, there is a need to reduce the number and sizes of sensor systems on board. A video camera on a UAV can serve multiple purposes. It can return imagery for processing by human users. The highly accurate bearing information provided by video makes it a useful tool to be incorporated into a navigation and tracking system. Radars can provide information about the types of objects in a scene and can operate in adverse weather conditions. The range and velocity measurements provided by the radar make it a good tool for navigation. FMCW radar and color video were fused to perform SLAM in an outdoor environment. A radar SLAM solution provided the basis for the fusion. Correlations between radar returns were used to estimate dead-reckoning parameters to obtain an estimate of the platform location. A new constraint was added in the radar detection process to prevent detecting poorly observable reflectors while maintaining a large number of measurements on highly observable reflectors. The radar measurements were mapped as landmarks, further improving the platform location estimates. As images were received from the video camera, changes in platform orientation were estimated, further improving the platform orientation estimates. The expected locations of radar measurements, whose uncertainty was modeled as Gaussian, were projected onto the images and used to estimate the location of the radar reflector in the image. The colors of the most likely reflector were saved and used to detect the reflector in subsequent images. The azimuth angles obtained from the image detections were used to improve the estimates of the landmarks in the SLAM map over previous estimates where only the radar was used

    Autonomous Vehicles: MMW Radar Backscattering Modeling of Traffic Environment, Vehicular Communication Modeling, and Antenna Designs

    77 GHz Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar serves as an essential component among many sensors required for autonomous navigation. High-fidelity simulation is indispensable for nowadays’ development of advanced automotive radar systems because radar simulation can accelerate the design and testing process and help people to better understand and process the radar data. The main challenge in automotive radar simulation is to simulate the complex scattering behavior of various targets in real time, which is required for sensor fusion with other sensory simulation, e.g. optical image simulation. In this thesis, an asymptotic method based on a fast-wideband physical optics (PO) calculation is developed and applied to get high fidelity radar response of traffic scenes and generate the corresponding radar images from traffic targets. The targets include pedestrians, vehicles, and other stationary targets. To further accelerate the simulation into real time, a physics-based statistical approach is developed. The RCS of targets are fit into statistical distributions, and then the statistical parameters are summarized as functions of range and aspect angles, and other attributes of the targets. For advanced radar with multiple transmitters and receivers, pixelated-scatterer statistical RCS models are developed to represent objects as extend targets and relax the requirement for far-field condition. A real-time radar scene simulation software, which will be referred to as Michigan Automotive Radar Scene Simulator (MARSS), based on the statistical models are developed and integrated with a physical 3D scene generation software (Unreal Engine 4). One of the major challenges in radar signal processing is to detect the angle of arrival (AOA) of multiple targets. A new analytic multiple-sources AOA estimation algorithm that outperforms many well-known AOA estimation algorithms is developed and verified by experiments. Moreover, the statistical parameters of RCS from targets and radar images are used in target classification approaches based on machine learning methods. In realistic road traffic environment, foliage is commonly encountered that can potentially block the line-of-sight link. In the second part of the thesis, a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) vehicular propagation channel model for tree trunks at two vehicular communication bands (5.9 GHz and 60 GHz) is proposed. Both near-field and far-field scattering models from tree trunk are developed based on modal expansion and surface current integral method. To make the results fast accessible and retractable, a macro model based on artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed to fit the path loss calculated from the complex electromagnetic (EM) based methods. In the third part of the thesis, two broadband (bandwidth > 50%) omnidirectional antenna designs are discussed to enable polarization diversity for next-generation communication systems. The first design is a compact horizontally polarized (HP) antenna, which contains four folded dipole radiators and utilizing their mutual coupling to enhance the bandwidth. The second one is a circularly polarized (CP) antenna. It is composed of one ultra-wide-band (UWB) monopole, the compact HP antenna, and a dedicatedly designed asymmetric power divider based feeding network.     Signal Subspace Processing in the Beam Space of a True Time Delay Beamformer Bank

    A number of techniques for Radio Frequency (RF) source location for wide bandwidth signals have been described that utilize coherent signal subspace processing, but often suffer from limitations such as the requirement for preliminary source location estimation, the need to apply the technique iteratively, computational expense or others. This dissertation examines a method that performs subspace processing of the data from a bank of true time delay beamformers. The spatial diversity of the beamformer bank alleviates the need for a preliminary estimate while simultaneously reducing the dimensionality of subsequent signal subspace processing resulting in computational efficiency. The pointing direction of the true time delay beams is independent of frequency, which results in a mapping from element space to beam space that is wide bandwidth in nature. This dissertation reviews previous methods, introduces the present method, presents simulation results that demonstrate the assertions, discusses an analysis of performance in relation to the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) with various levels of noise in the system, and discusses computational efficiency. One limitation of the method is that in practice it may be appropriate for systems that can tolerate a limited field of view. The application of Electronic Intelligence is one such application. This application is discussed as one that is appropriate for a method exhibiting high resolution of very wide bandwidth closely spaced sources and often does not require a wide field of view. In relation to system applications, this dissertation also discusses practical employment of the novel method in terms of antenna elements, arrays, platforms, engagement geometries, and other parameters. The true time delay beam space method is shown through modeling and simulation to be capable of resolving closely spaced very wideband sources over a relevant field of view in a single algorithmic pass, requiring no course preliminary estimation, and exhibiting low computational expense superior to many previous wideband coherent integration techniques

    Time of Arrival and Angle of Arrival Estimation of LTE Signals for Positioning Applications

    With the increase of services that need accurate location of the user, new techniques that cooperate with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) are necessary. Toward this objective, this thesis presents our research work about the estimation of the time of arrival (TOA) and of the angle of arrival (AOA) exploiting modern cellular signals. In particular, we focus on the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard, and in particular uplink and downlink reference signals are exploited to this purposes. The current release of the 3GPP LTE specification supports a UTDOA localization technique based on the Sounding Reference Signal (SRS). In real environments, however, user equipments (UE) are rarely set up to transmit this particular signal. The main original contribution of this thesis consists in a new TOA estimation method based on uplink transmission. In particular, we explore the possibility of performing radio localization exploiting the uplink Demodulation Reference Signal (DM-RS), which is always sent by UEs during data transmission. Real uplink transmissions are modeled in simulations and the performance of known algorithms like SAGE and IAA-APES are evaluated for TOA estimation. A new method to estimate the initial conditions of the SAGE algorithm is proposed and the estimation performance in uplink scenarios is evaluated. The analysis revealed that the proposed method outperforms the non-coherent initial conditions estimation proposed in the literature, when uplink transmission are used. Then, the benefits of our proposal are evaluated and the feasibility of TOA estimation exploiting the DM-RS is demonstrated by means of experiments using real DM-RS signals generated by an LTE module. A second original contribution is given by AOA estimation. In particular, the independence of AOA estimation with respect to uplink and downlink transmission is verified. According to this result, the performance of IAA-APES and SAGE in real-world AOA experiments is evaluated in the downlink scenarios. Based on the overall results, we conclude that the proposed radio localization method, exploiting the uplink Demodulation Reference Signal (DM-RS), can be extended also to joint TOA, AOA using SAGE, for hybrid localization techniques. We can also conclude that the proposed method can be easily extended to downlink transmission exploiting the cell specific reference signal (CRS)

    MVDR broadband beamforming using polynomial matrix techniques

    This thesis addresses the formulation of and solution to broadband minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamforming. Two approaches to this problem are considered, namely, generalised sidelobe canceller (GSC) and Capon beamformers. These are examined based on a novel technique which relies on polynomial matrix formulations. The new scheme is based on the second order statistics of the array sensor measurements in order to estimate a space-time covariance matrix. The beamforming problem can be formulated based on this space-time covariance matrix. Akin to the narrowband problem, where an optimum solution can be derived from the eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) of a constant covariance matrix, this utility is here extended to the broadband case. The decoupling of the space-time covariance matrix in this case is provided by means of a polynomial matrix EVD. The proposed approach is initially exploited to design a GSC beamformer for a uniform linear array, and then extended to the constrained MVDR, or Capon, beamformer and also the GSC with an arbitrary array structure. The uniqueness of the designed GSC comes from utilising the polynomial matrix technique, and its ability to steer the array beam towards an off-broadside direction without the pre-steering stage that is associated with conventional approaches to broadband beamformers. To solve the broadband beamforming problem, this thesis addresses a number of additional tools. A first one is the accurate construction of both the steering vectors based on fractional delay filters, which are required for the broadband constraint formulation of a beamformer, as for the construction of the quiescent beamformer. In the GSC case, we also discuss how a block matrix can be obtained, and introduce a novel paraunitary matrix completion algorithm. For the Capon beamformer, the polynomial extension requires the inversion of a polynomial matrix, for which a residue-based method is proposed that offers better accuracy compared to previously utilised approaches. These proposed polynomial matrix techniques are evaluated in a number of simulations. The results show that the polynomial broadband beamformer (PBBF) steersthe main beam towards the direction of the signal of interest (SoI) and protects the signal over the specified bandwidth, and at the same time suppresses unwanted signals by placing nulls in their directions. In addition to that, the PBBF is compared to the standard time domain broadband beamformer in terms of their mean square error performance, beam-pattern, and computation complexity. This comparison shows that the PBBF can offer a significant reduction in computation complexity compared to its standard counterpart. Overall, the main benefits of this approach include beam steering towards an arbitrary look direction with no need for pre-steering step, and a potentially significant reduction in computational complexity due to the decoupling of dependencies of the quiescent beamformer, blocking matrix, and the adaptive filter compared to a standard broadband beamformer implementation.This thesis addresses the formulation of and solution to broadband minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamforming. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity
