Grammar-based Representation and Identification of Dynamical Systems
In this paper we propose a novel approach to identify dynamical systems. The
method estimates the model structure and the parameters of the model
simultaneously, automating the critical decisions involved in identification
such as model structure and complexity selection. In order to solve the
combined model structure and model parameter estimation problem, a new
representation of dynamical systems is proposed. The proposed representation is
based on Tree Adjoining Grammar, a formalism that was developed from linguistic
considerations. Using the proposed representation, the identification problem
can be interpreted as a multi-objective optimization problem and we propose a
Evolutionary Algorithm-based approach to solve the problem. A benchmark example
is used to demonstrate the proposed approach. The results were found to be
comparable to that obtained by state-of-the-art non-linear system
identification methods, without making use of knowledge of the system
description.Comment: Submitted to European Control Conference (ECC) 201
Evolutionary-based sparse regression for the experimental identification of duffing oscillator
In this paper, an evolutionary-based sparse regression algorithm is proposed and applied onto experimental data collected from a Duffing oscillator setup and numerical simulation data. Our purpose is to identify the Coulomb friction terms as part of the ordinary differential equation of the system. Correct identification of this nonlinear system using sparse identification is hugely dependent on selecting the correct form of nonlinearity included in the function library. Consequently, in this work, the evolutionary-based sparse identification is replacing the need for user knowledge when constructing the library in sparse identification. Constructing the library based on the data-driven evolutionary approach is an effective way to extend the space of nonlinear functions, allowing for the sparse regression to be applied on an extensive space of functions. The results show that the method provides an effective algorithm for the purpose of unveiling the physical nature of the Duffing oscillator. In addition, the robustness of the identification algorithm is investigated for various levels of noise in simulation. The proposed method has possible applications to other nonlinear dynamic systems in mechatronics, robotics, and electronics
Data-driven PDE discovery with evolutionary approach
The data-driven models allow one to define the model structure in cases when
a priori information is not sufficient to build other types of models. The
possible way to obtain physical interpretation is the data-driven differential
equation discovery techniques. The existing methods of PDE (partial derivative
equations) discovery are bound with the sparse regression. However, sparse
regression is restricting the resulting model form, since the terms for PDE are
defined before regression. The evolutionary approach described in the article
has a symbolic regression as the background instead and thus has fewer
restrictions on the PDE form. The evolutionary method of PDE discovery (EPDE)
is described and tested on several canonical PDEs. The question of robustness
is examined on a noised data example
Elite Bases Regression: A Real-time Algorithm for Symbolic Regression
Symbolic regression is an important but challenging research topic in data
mining. It can detect the underlying mathematical models. Genetic programming
(GP) is one of the most popular methods for symbolic regression. However, its
convergence speed might be too slow for large scale problems with a large
number of variables. This drawback has become a bottleneck in practical
applications. In this paper, a new non-evolutionary real-time algorithm for
symbolic regression, Elite Bases Regression (EBR), is proposed. EBR generates a
set of candidate basis functions coded with parse-matrix in specific mapping
rules. Meanwhile, a certain number of elite bases are preserved and updated
iteratively according to the correlation coefficients with respect to the
target model. The regression model is then spanned by the elite bases. A
comparative study between EBR and a recent proposed machine learning method for
symbolic regression, Fast Function eXtraction (FFX), are conducted. Numerical
results indicate that EBR can solve symbolic regression problems more
effectively.Comment: The 2017 13th International Conference on Natural Computation, Fuzzy

Parameter reduction in nonlinear state-space identification of hysteresis
Hysteresis is a highly nonlinear phenomenon, showing up in a wide variety of
science and engineering problems. The identification of hysteretic systems from
input-output data is a challenging task. Recent work on black-box polynomial
nonlinear state-space modeling for hysteresis identification has provided
promising results, but struggles with a large number of parameters due to the
use of multivariate polynomials. This drawback is tackled in the current paper
by applying a decoupling approach that results in a more parsimonious
representation involving univariate polynomials. This work is carried out
numerically on input-output data generated by a Bouc-Wen hysteretic model and
follows up on earlier work of the authors. The current article discusses the
polynomial decoupling approach and explores the selection of the number of
univariate polynomials with the polynomial degree, as well as the connections
with neural network modeling. We have found that the presented decoupling
approach is able to reduce the number of parameters of the full nonlinear model
up to about 50\%, while maintaining a comparable output error level.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure
Generalised additive multiscale wavelet models constructed using particle swarm optimisation and mutual information for spatio-temporal evolutionary system representation
A new class of generalised additive multiscale wavelet models (GAMWMs) is introduced for high dimensional spatio-temporal evolutionary (STE) system identification. A novel two-stage hybrid learning scheme is developed for constructing such an additive wavelet model. In the first stage, a new orthogonal projection pursuit (OPP) method, implemented using a particle swarm optimisation(PSO) algorithm, is proposed for successively augmenting an initial coarse wavelet model, where relevant parameters of the associated wavelets are optimised using a particle swarm optimiser. The resultant network model, obtained in the first stage, may however be a redundant model. In the second stage, a forward orthogonal regression (FOR) algorithm, implemented using a mutual information method, is then applied to refine and improve the initially constructed wavelet model. The proposed two-stage hybrid method can generally produce a parsimonious wavelet model, where a ranked list of wavelet functions, according to the capability of each wavelet to represent the total variance in the desired system output signal is produced. The proposed new modelling framework is applied to real observed images, relative to a chemical reaction exhibiting a spatio-temporal evolutionary behaviour, and the associated identification results show that the new modelling framework is applicable and effective for handling high dimensional identification problems of spatio-temporal evolution sytems
Frequency domain state-space system identification
An algorithm for identifying state-space models from frequency response data of linear systems is presented. A matrix-fraction description of the transfer function is employed to curve-fit the frequency response data, using the least-squares method. The parameters of the matrix-fraction representation are then used to construct the Markov parameters of the system. Finally, state-space models are obtained through the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm using Markov parameters. The main advantage of this approach is that the curve-fitting and the Markov parameter construction are linear problems which avoid the difficulties of nonlinear optimization of other approaches. Another advantage is that it avoids windowing distortions associated with other frequency domain methods
