    An artificial bee colony algorithm for the capacitated vehicle routing problem

    This paper introduces an artificial bee colony heuristic for solving the capacitated vehicle routing problem. The artificial bee colony heuristic is a swarm-based heuristic, which mimics the foraging behavior of a honey bee swarm. An enhanced version of the artificial bee colony heuristic is also proposed to improve the solution quality of the original version. The performance of the enhanced heuristic is evaluated on two sets of standard benchmark instances, and compared with the original artificial bee colony heuristic. The computational results show that the enhanced heuristic outperforms the original one, and can produce good solutions when compared with the existing heuristics. These results seem to indicate that the enhanced heuristic is an alternative to solve the capacitated vehicle routing problem. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.postprin

    DeepACO: Neural-enhanced Ant Systems for Combinatorial Optimization

    Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a meta-heuristic algorithm that has been successfully applied to various Combinatorial Optimization Problems (COPs). Traditionally, customizing ACO for a specific problem requires the expert design of knowledge-driven heuristics. In this paper, we propose DeepACO, a generic framework that leverages deep reinforcement learning to automate heuristic designs. DeepACO serves to strengthen the heuristic measures of existing ACO algorithms and dispense with laborious manual design in future ACO applications. As a neural-enhanced meta-heuristic, DeepACO consistently outperforms its ACO counterparts on eight COPs using a single neural model and a single set of hyperparameters. As a Neural Combinatorial Optimization method, DeepACO performs better than or on par with problem-specific methods on canonical routing problems.     Solving Combinatorial Optimization Problems Using Genetic Algorithms and Ant Colony Optimization

    This dissertation presents metaheuristic approaches in the areas of genetic algorithms and ant colony optimization to combinatorial optimization problems. Ant colony optimization for the split delivery vehicle routing problem An Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) based approach is presented to solve the Split Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem (SDVRP). SDVRP is a relaxation of the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) wherein a customer can be visited by more than one vehicle. The proposed ACO based algorithm is tested on benchmark problems previously published in the literature. The results indicate that the ACO based approach is competitive in both solution quality and solution time. In some instances, the ACO method achieves the best known results to date for the benchmark problems. Hybrid genetic algorithm for the split delivery vehicle routing problem (SDVRP) The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is a combinatory optimization problem in the field of transportation and logistics. There are various variants of VRP which have been developed of the years; one of which is the Split Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem (SDVRP). The SDVRP allows customers to be assigned to multiple routes. A hybrid genetic algorithm comprising a combination of ant colony optimization, genetic algorithm, and heuristics is proposed and tested on benchmark SDVRP test problems. Genetic algorithm approach to solve the hospital physician scheduling problem Emergency departments have repeating 24-hour cycles of non-stationary Poisson arrivals and high levels of service time variation. The problem is to find a shift schedule that considers queuing effects and minimizes average patient waiting time and maximizes physicians’ shift preference subject to constraints on shift start times, shift durations and total physician hours available per day. An approach that utilizes a genetic algorithm and discrete event simulation to solve the physician scheduling problem in a hospital is proposed.     Performance Comparison of Two-phase LP-based Heuristic Methods for Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with Three Objectives

    This paper develops a two-phase LP-based heuristic for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). It considers three objectives: (1) minimizing the total costs of fuel consumption and overtime, (2) maximizing the total personal relationships between customers and drivers, and (3) balancing the delivery weights of vehicles. The two-phase LP-based heuristic (cluster-first route-second) is proposed. First, in the clustering stage, three LP-based clustering models (denoted by C1, C2, and C3) are developed. Customers are grouped into clusters based on real distances between the customers for C1, personal relationships between the customers and drivers for C2, and the delivery weights of vehicles for C3. Second, in the routing stage, an LP-based traveling salesman problem model is used to form a route for each cluster, to minimize the total costs of fuel consumption and overtime labor. The experimental results from a case study of Thai SMEs show that when the C2 clustering model is applied, the performances are the best. Significant contributions of this paper include: (1) it is an original paper that proposes the C2 clustering model, and it has the best performances based on the experimental results, and (2) the proposed two-phase LP-based heuristic methods are suitable for practical use by SMEs since the required computational time is short, and it has multiple models with different objectives that can be selected to match a user's requirements

    An Adaptive Iterated Local Search for the Mixed Capacitated General Routing Problem

    We study the mixed capacitated general routing problem (MCGRP) in which a fleet of capacitated vehicles has to serve a set of requests by traversing a mixed weighted graph. The requests may be located on nodes, edges, and arcs. The problem has theoretical interest because it is a generalization of the capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP), the capacitated arc routing problem (CARP), and the general routing problem. It is also of great practical interest since it is often a more accurate model for real-world cases than its widely studied specializations, particularly for so-called street routing applications. Examples are urban waste collection, snow removal, and newspaper delivery. We propose a new iterated local search metaheuristic for the problem that also includes vital mechanisms from adaptive large neighborhood search combined with further intensification through local search. The method utilizes selected, tailored, and novel local search and large neighborhood search operators, as well as a new local search strategy. Computational experiments show that the proposed metaheuristic is highly effective on five published benchmarks for the MCGRP. The metaheuristic yields excellent results also on seven standard CARP data sets, and good results on four well-known CVRP benchmarks, including improvement of the best known upper bound for one instance

    Adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm – performance evaluation under parallel schemes & applications

    Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) is a fairly recent yet popular single-solution heuristic for solving discrete optimization problems. Even though the heuristic has been a popular choice for researchers in recent times, the parallelization of this algorithm is not widely studied in the literature compared to the other classical metaheuristics. To extend the existing literature, this study proposes several different parallel schemes to parallelize the basic/sequential ALNS algorithm. More specifically, seven different parallel schemes are employed to target different characteristics of the ALNS algorithm and the capability of the local computers. The schemes of this study are implemented in a master-slave architecture to manage and assign loads in processors of the local computers. The overall goal is to simultaneously explore different areas of the search space in an attempt to escape the local minima, taking effective steps toward the optimal solution and, to the end, accelerating the convergence of the ALNS algorithm. The performance of the schemes is tested by solving a capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) with available wellknown test instances. Our computational results indicate that all the parallel schemes are capable of providing a competitive optimality gap in solving CVRP within our investigated test instances. However, the parallel scheme (scheme 1), which runs the ALNS algorithm independently within different slave processors (e.g., without sharing any information with other slave processors) until the synchronization occurs only when one of the processors meets its predefined termination criteria and reports the solution to the master processor, provides the best running time with solving the instances approximately 10.5 times faster than the basic/sequential ALNS algorithm. These findings are applied in a real-life fulfillment process using mixed-mode delivery with trucks and drones. Complex but optimized routes are generated in a short time that is applicable to perform last-mile delivery to customers

    Meta-RaPS Hybridization with Machine Learning Algorithms

    This dissertation focuses on advancing the Metaheuristic for Randomized Priority Search algorithm, known as Meta-RaPS, by integrating it with machine learning algorithms. Introducing a new metaheuristic algorithm starts with demonstrating its performance. This is accomplished by using the new algorithm to solve various combinatorial optimization problems in their basic form. The next stage focuses on advancing the new algorithm by strengthening its relatively weaker characteristics. In the third traditional stage, the algorithms are exercised in solving more complex optimization problems. In the case of effective algorithms, the second and third stages can occur in parallel as researchers are eager to employ good algorithms to solve complex problems. The third stage can inadvertently strengthen the original algorithm. The simplicity and effectiveness Meta-RaPS enjoys places it in both second and third research stages concurrently. This dissertation explores strengthening Meta-RaPS by incorporating memory and learning features. The major conceptual frameworks that guided this work are the Adaptive Memory Programming framework (or AMP) and the metaheuristic hybridization taxonomy. The concepts from both frameworks are followed when identifying useful information that Meta-RaPS can collect during execution. Hybridizing Meta-RaPS with machine learning algorithms helped in transforming the collected information into knowledge. The learning concepts selected are supervised and unsupervised learning. The algorithms selected to achieve both types of learning are the Inductive Decision Tree (supervised learning) and Association Rules (unsupervised learning). The objective behind hybridizing Meta-RaPS with an Inductive Decision Tree algorithm is to perform online control for Meta-RaPS\u27 parameters. This Inductive Decision Tree algorithm is used to find favorable parameter values using knowledge gained from previous Meta-RaPS iterations. The values selected are used in future Meta-RaPS iterations. The objective behind hybridizing Meta-RaPS with an Association Rules algorithm is to identify patterns associated with good solutions. These patterns are considered knowledge and are inherited as starting points for in future Meta-RaPS iteration. The performance of the hybrid Meta-RaPS algorithms is demonstrated by solving the capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with and without time windows

    A Solution Proposal to Vehicle Routing Problem with Integer Linear Programming: A Distributor Company Sample

    It was aimed to minimize the total distance of the routes under the capacity constraint of the routes that a distributor company has drawn in the direction of the demands. To this end, a route to Gebze-based steel production and distribution was drawn up to meet all the demands of a fabrication plant. In order to determine the minimum total distance routes, the solution recommendation by adapting the Capacity Constrained Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) which is one of the basic route problems using Branch and Cut algorithm of 0-1 Integer Linear Programming (ILP) was introduced. Distances between the nodes that make up the route are measured via Google Maps. Optimal solutions were obtained by using LINDO computer software to solve the problem.
