    QoS-Aware Energy Management and Node Scheduling Schemes for Sensor Network-Based Surveillance Applications

    Recent advances in wireless technologies have led to an increased deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for a plethora of diverse surveillance applications such as health, military, and environmental. However, sensor nodes in WSNs usually suffer from short device lifetime due to severe energy constraints and therefore, cannot guarantee to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) needs of various applications. This is proving to be a major hindrance to the widespread adoption of WSNs for such applications. Therefore, to extend the lifetime of WSNs, it is critical to optimize the energy usage in sensor nodes that are often deployed in remote and hostile terrains. To this effect, several energy management schemes have been proposed recently. Node scheduling is one such strategy that can prolong the lifetime of WSNs and also helps to balance the workload among the sensor nodes. In this article, we discuss on the energy management techniques of WSN with a particular emphasis on node scheduling and propose an energy management life-cycle model and an energy conservation pyramid to extend the network lifetime of WSNs. We have provided a detailed classification and evaluation of various node scheduling schemes in terms of their ability to fulfill essential QoS requirements, namely coverage, connectivity, fault tolerance, and security. We considered essential design issues such as network type, deployment pattern, sensing model in the classification process. Furthermore, we have discussed the operational characteristics of schemes with their related merits and demerits. We have compared the efficacy of a few well known graph-based scheduling schemes with suitable performance analysis graph. Finally, we study challenges in designing and implementing node scheduling schemes from a QoS perspective and outline open research problems

    Intrusion Tolerance: Concepts and Design Principles. A Tutorial

    In traditional dependability, fault tolerance has been the workhorse of the many solutions published over the years. Classical security-related work has on the other hand privileged, with few exceptions, intrusion prevention, or intrusion detection without systematic forms of processing the intrusion symptoms. A new approach has slowly emerged during the past decade, and gained impressive momentum recently: intrusion tolerance. The purpose of this tutorial is to explain the underlying concepts and design principles. The tutorial reviews previous results under the light of intrusion tolerance (IT), introduces the fundamental ideas behind IT, and presents recent advances of the state-of-the-art, coming from European and US research efforts devoted to IT.     Internet of things for disaster management: state-of-the-art and prospects

    Disastrous events are cordially involved with the momentum of nature. As such mishaps have been showing off own mastery, situations have gone beyond the control of human resistive mechanisms far ago. Fortunately, several technologies are in service to gain affirmative knowledge and analysis of a disaster's occurrence. Recently, Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm has opened a promising door toward catering of multitude problems related to agriculture, industry, security, and medicine due to its attractive features, such as heterogeneity, interoperability, light-weight, and flexibility. This paper surveys existing approaches to encounter the relevant issues with disasters, such as early warning, notification, data analytics, knowledge aggregation, remote monitoring, real-time analytics, and victim localization. Simultaneous interventions with IoT are also given utmost importance while presenting these facts. A comprehensive discussion on the state-of-the-art scenarios to handle disastrous events is presented. Furthermore, IoT-supported protocols and market-ready deployable products are summarized to address these issues. Finally, this survey highlights open challenges and research trends in IoT-enabled disaster management systems. © 2013 IEEE

    Blockchain leveraged decentralized IoT eHealth framework

    Blockchain technologies recently emerging for eHealth, can facilitate a secure, decentral- ized and patient-driven, record management system. However, Blockchain technologies cannot accommodate the storage of data generated from IoT devices in remote patient management (RPM) settings as this application requires a fast consensus mechanism, care- ful management of keys and enhanced protocols for privacy. In this paper, we propose a Blockchain leveraged decentralized eHealth architecture which comprises three layers: (1) The Sensing layer –Body Area Sensor Networks include medical sensors typically on or in a patient body transmitting data to a smartphone. (2) The NEAR processing layer –Edge Networks consist of devices at one hop from data sensing IoT devices. (3) The FAR pro- cessing layer –Core Networks comprise Cloud or other high computing servers). A Patient Agent (PA) software replicated on the three layers processes medical data to ensure reli- able, secure and private communication. The PA executes a lightweight Blockchain consen- sus mechanism and utilizes a Blockchain leveraged task-offloading algorithm to ensure pa- tient’s privacy while outsourcing tasks.     O conceito de Big Data tem tido um grande impacto no campo da tecnologia, em particular na gestão e análise de enormes volumes de informação. Atualmente, as organizações consideram o Big Data como uma oportunidade para gerir e explorar os seus dados o máximo possível, com o objetivo de apoiar as suas decisões dentro das diferentes áreas operacionais. Assim, é necessário analisar vários conceitos sobre o Big Data e o Big Data Analytics, incluindo definições, características, vantagens e desafios. As ferramentas de Business Intelligence (BI), juntamente com a geração de conhecimento, são conceitos fundamentais para o processo de tomada de decisão e transformação da informação. Ao investigar as plataformas de Big Data, as práticas industriais atuais e as tendências relacionadas com o mundo da investigação, é possível entender o impacto do Big Data Analytics nas pequenas organizações. Este trabalho pretende propor soluções para as micro, pequenas ou médias empresas (PME) que têm um grande impacto na economia portuguesa, dado que representam a maioria do tecido empresarial. As plataformas de código aberto para o Big Data Analytics oferecem uma grande oportunidade de inovação nas PMEs. Este trabalho de pesquisa apresenta uma análise comparativa das funcionalidades e características das plataformas e os passos a serem tomados para uma análise mais profunda e comparativa. Após a análise comparativa, apresentamos uma avaliação e seleção de plataformas Big Data Analytics (BDA) usando e adaptando a metodologia QSOS (Qualification and Selection of software Open Source) para qualificação e seleção de software open-source. O resultado desta avaliação e seleção traduziu-se na eleição de duas plataformas para os testes experimentais. Nas plataformas de software livre de BDA foi usado o mesmo conjunto de dados assim como a mesma configuração de hardware e software. Na comparação das duas plataformas, demonstrou que a HPCC Systems Platform é mais eficiente e confiável que a Hortonworks Data Platform. Em particular, as PME portuguesas devem considerar as plataformas BDA como uma oportunidade de obter vantagem competitiva e melhorar os seus processos e, consequentemente, definir uma estratégia de TI e de negócio. Por fim, este é um trabalho sobre Big Data, que se espera que sirva como um convite e motivação para novos trabalhos de investigação.The concept of Big Data has been having a great impact in the field of technology, particularly in the management and analysis of huge volumes of information. Nowadays organizations look for Big Data as an opportunity to manage and explore their data the maximum they can, with the objective of support decisions within its different operational areas. Thus, it is necessary to analyse several concepts about Big Data and Big Data Analytics, including definitions, features, advantages and disadvantages. Business intelligence along with the generation of knowledge are fundamental concepts for the process of decision-making and transformation of information. By investigate today's big data platforms, current industrial practices and related trends in the research world, it is possible to understand the impact of Big Data Analytics on small organizations. This research intends to propose solutions for micro, small or médium enterprises (SMEs) that have a great impact on the Portuguese economy since they represente approximately 90% of the companies in Portugal. The open source platforms for Big Data Analytics offers a great opportunity for SMEs. This research work presents a comparative analysis of those platforms features and functionalities and the steps that will be taken for a more profound and comparative analysis. After the comparative analysis, we present an evaluation and selection of Big Data Analytics (BDA) platforms using and adapting the Qualification and Selection of software Open Source (QSOS) method. The result of this evaluation and selection was the selection of two platforms for the empirical experiment and tests. The same testbed and dataset was used in the two Open Source Big Data Analytics platforms. When comparing two BDA platforms, HPCC Systems Platform is found to be more efficient and reliable than Hortonworks Data Platform. In particular, Portuguese SMEs should consider for BDA platforms an opportunity to obtain competitive advantage and improve their processes and consequently define an IT and business strategy. Finally, this is a research work on Big Data; it is hoped that this will serve as an invitation and motivation for new research
