Genetic Programming for Multibiometrics
Biometric systems suffer from some drawbacks: a biometric system can provide
in general good performances except with some individuals as its performance
depends highly on the quality of the capture. One solution to solve some of
these problems is to use multibiometrics where different biometric systems are
combined together (multiple captures of the same biometric modality, multiple
feature extraction algorithms, multiple biometric modalities...). In this
paper, we are interested in score level fusion functions application (i.e., we
use a multibiometric authentication scheme which accept or deny the claimant
for using an application). In the state of the art, the weighted sum of scores
(which is a linear classifier) and the use of an SVM (which is a non linear
classifier) provided by different biometric systems provide one of the best
performances. We present a new method based on the use of genetic programming
giving similar or better performances (depending on the complexity of the
database). We derive a score fusion function by assembling some classical
primitives functions (+, *, -, ...). We have validated the proposed method on
three significant biometric benchmark datasets from the state of the art
Distorted Fingerprint Verification System
Fingerprint verification is one of the most reliable personal identification methods. Fingerprint matching is affected by non-linear distortion introduced in fingerprint impression during the image acquisition process. This non-linear deformation changes both the position and orientation of minutiae. The proposed system operates in three stages: alignment based fingerprint matching, fuzzy clustering and classifier framework. First, an enhanced input fingerprint image has been aligned with the template fingerprint image and matching score is computed. To improve the performance of the system, a fuzzy clustering based on distance and density has been used to cluster the feature set obtained from the fingerprint matcher. Finally a classifier framework has been developed and found that cost sensitive classifier produces better results. The system has been evaluated on fingerprint database and the experimental result shows that system produces a verification rate of 96%. This system plays an important role in forensic and civilian applications.Biometric, Fingerprints, Distortion, Fuzzy Clustering, Cost Sensitive Classifier
An Evaluation of Score Level Fusion Approaches for Fingerprint and Finger-vein Biometrics
Biometric systems have to address many requirements, such as large population
coverage, demographic diversity, varied deployment environment, as well as
practical aspects like performance and spoofing attacks. Traditional unimodal
biometric systems do not fully meet the aforementioned requirements making them
vulnerable and susceptible to different types of attacks. In response to that,
modern biometric systems combine multiple biometric modalities at different
fusion levels. The fused score is decisive to classify an unknown user as a
genuine or impostor. In this paper, we evaluate combinations of score
normalization and fusion techniques using two modalities (fingerprint and
finger-vein) with the goal of identifying which one achieves better improvement
rate over traditional unimodal biometric systems. The individual scores
obtained from finger-veins and fingerprints are combined at score level using
three score normalization techniques (min-max, z-score, hyperbolic tangent) and
four score fusion approaches (minimum score, maximum score, simple sum, user
weighting). The experimental results proved that the combination of hyperbolic
tangent score normalization technique with the simple sum fusion approach
achieve the best improvement rate of 99.98%.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, conference, NISK 201
Optimization of star research algorithm for esmo star tracker
This paper explains in detail the design and the development of a software research star algorithm, embedded on a star tracker, by the ISAE/SUPAERO team. This research algorithm is inspired by musical techniques. This work will be carried out as part of the ESMO (European Student Moon Orbiter) project by different teams of students and professors from ISAE/SUPAERO (Institut Supe ́rieur de l’Ae ́ronautique et de l’Espace). Till today, the system engineering studies have been completed and the work that will be presented will concern the algorithmic and the embedded software development. The physical architecture of the sensor relies on APS 750 developed by the CIMI laboratory of ISAE/SUPAERO. First, a star research algorithm based on the image acquired in lost-in-space mode (one of the star tracker opera- tional modes) will be presented; it is inspired by techniques of musical recognition with the help of the correlation of digital signature (hash) with those stored in databases. The musical recognition principle is based on finger- printing, i.e. the extraction of points of interest in the studied signal. In the musical context, the signal spectrogram is used to identify these points. Applying this technique in image processing domain requires an equivalent tool to spectrogram. Those points of interest create a hash and are used to efficiently search within the database pre- viously sorted in order to be compared. The main goals of this research algorithm are to minimise the number of steps in the computations in order to deliver information at a higher frequency and to increase the computation robustness against the different possible disturbances
Biometric presentation attack detection: beyond the visible spectrum
The increased need for unattended authentication in
multiple scenarios has motivated a wide deployment of biometric
systems in the last few years. This has in turn led to the
disclosure of security concerns specifically related to biometric
systems. Among them, presentation attacks (PAs, i.e., attempts
to log into the system with a fake biometric characteristic or
presentation attack instrument) pose a severe threat to the
security of the system: any person could eventually fabricate
or order a gummy finger or face mask to impersonate someone
else. In this context, we present a novel fingerprint presentation
attack detection (PAD) scheme based on i) a new capture device
able to acquire images within the short wave infrared (SWIR)
spectrum, and i i) an in-depth analysis of several state-of-theart
techniques based on both handcrafted and deep learning
features. The approach is evaluated on a database comprising
over 4700 samples, stemming from 562 different subjects and
35 different presentation attack instrument (PAI) species. The
results show the soundness of the proposed approach with a
detection equal error rate (D-EER) as low as 1.35% even in a
realistic scenario where five different PAI species are considered
only for testing purposes (i.e., unknown attacks
Curved Gabor Filters for Fingerprint Image Enhancement
Gabor filters play an important role in many application areas for the
enhancement of various types of images and the extraction of Gabor features.
For the purpose of enhancing curved structures in noisy images, we introduce
curved Gabor filters which locally adapt their shape to the direction of flow.
These curved Gabor filters enable the choice of filter parameters which
increase the smoothing power without creating artifacts in the enhanced image.
In this paper, curved Gabor filters are applied to the curved ridge and valley
structure of low-quality fingerprint images. First, we combine two orientation
field estimation methods in order to obtain a more robust estimation for very
noisy images. Next, curved regions are constructed by following the respective
local orientation and they are used for estimating the local ridge frequency.
Lastly, curved Gabor filters are defined based on curved regions and they are
applied for the enhancement of low-quality fingerprint images. Experimental
results on the FVC2004 databases show improvements of this approach in
comparison to state-of-the-art enhancement methods
