An expert system for scheduling requests for communications Links between TDRSS and ERBS
An ERBS-TDRSS Contact Planning System (ERBS-TDRSS CPS) is described which uses a graphics interface and the NASA Transportable Interference Engine. The procedure involves transfer of the ERBS-TDRSS Ground Track Orbit Prediction data to the ERBS flight operations area, where the ERBS-TDRSS CPS automatically generates requests for TDRSS service. As requested events are rejected, alternative context sensitive strategies are employed to generate new requested events until a schedule is completed. A report generator builds schedule requests for separate ERBS-TDRSS contacts
Kitaev's quantum double model from a local quantum physics point of view
A prominent example of a topologically ordered system is Kitaev's quantum
double model for finite groups (which in particular
includes , the toric code). We will look at these models from
the point of view of local quantum physics. In particular, we will review how
in the abelian case, one can do a Doplicher-Haag-Roberts analysis to study the
different superselection sectors of the model. In this way one finds that the
charges are in one-to-one correspondence with the representations of
, and that they are in fact anyons. Interchanging two of such
anyons gives a non-trivial phase, not just a possible sign change. The case of
non-abelian groups is more complicated. We outline how one could use
amplimorphisms, that is, morphisms to study the superselection
structure in that case. Finally, we give a brief overview of applications of
topologically ordered systems to the field of quantum computation.Comment: Chapter contributed to R. Brunetti, C. Dappiaggi, K. Fredenhagen, J.

Operational aspects of a spacecraft planning/scheduling expert system
Various operational aspects of the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) are described. The ERBS-TDRSS Contract Planning System is an expert system which has been used operationally since June 1987 by the ERBS Flight Operations Team (FOT) at Goddard Space Flight Center to build weekly schedules of requests for service from the TDRSS. The basic operation of the system and significant enhancements and changes are discussed
Crustal dynamics project site selection criteria
The criteria for selecting site locations and constructing observing pads and monuments for the Mobile VLB1 and the satellite laser ranging systems used in the NASA/GSFC Crustal Dynamics Project are discussed. Gross system characteristics (size, shape, weight, power requirement, foot prints, etc.) are given for the Moblas, MV-1 through 3, TLRS-1 through 4 and Series instruments
Non destructive testing of medium and high voltage cables with a transportable radiography system
A power cable is the most important part in a power transmission system. The cables must be total quality dedicated andcertified for development, manufacturing and installation, however are exposed to a corrosive environment. The purpose ofthis paper is to show that the fast neutron radiography with a transportable system is a solution to find defects in the cablesand reduce the cost of inspection. The design, regarding the materials considered, was compatible with the European UnionDirective on “Restriction of Hazardous Substances” (RoHS) 2002/95/EC, hence excluding the use of cadmium and lead.Wide width values for the collimator ratio were calculated. With suitable collimator design it was possibly to optimize theneutron radiography parameters. Finally the shielding design was examined closely. The proposed system has been simulatedusing the MCNPX code
A translator writing system for microcomputer high-level languages and assemblers
In order to implement high level languages whenever possible, a translator writing system of advanced design was developed. It is intended for routine production use by many programmers working on different projects. As well as a fairly conventional parser generator, it includes a system for the rapid generation of table driven code generators. The parser generator was developed from a prototype version. The translator writing system includes various tools for the management of the source text of a compiler under construction. In addition, it supplies various default source code sections so that its output is always compilable and executable. The system thereby encourages iterative enhancement as a development methodology by ensuring an executable program from the earliest stages of a compiler development project. The translator writing system includes PASCAL/48 compiler, three assemblers, and two compilers for a subset of HAL/S
ATS-6 millimeter wavelength propagation experiment
The real time digital data acquisition system used to acquire ATS-6 propagation data at the fixed, transportable, and unmanned terminals is described. This system performs all digital conversion, formating, merging, and recording. All data from the remote sites are transferred to the fixed terminal for recording on a common digital tape. The current status and summary of operations are also reviewed
