Analysis and application of digital spectral warping in analog and mixed-signal testing
Spectral warping is a digital signal processing transform which shifts the frequencies contained within a signal along the frequency axis. The Fourier transform coefficients of a warped signal correspond to frequency-domain 'samples' of the original signal which are unevenly spaced along the frequency axis. This property allows the technique to be efficiently used for DSP-based analog and mixed-signal testing. The analysis and application of spectral warping for test signal generation, response analysis, filter design, frequency response evaluation, etc. are discussed in this paper along with examples of the software and hardware implementation
Development of a remote digital augmentation system and application to a remotely piloted research vehicle
A cost-effective approach to flight testing advanced control concepts with remotely piloted vehicles is described. The approach utilizes a ground based digital computer coupled to the remotely piloted vehicle's motion sensors and control surface actuators through telemetry links to provide high bandwidth feedback control. The system was applied to the control of an unmanned 3/8-scale model of the F-15 airplane. The model was remotely augmented; that is, the F-15 mechanical and control augmentation flight control systems were simulated by the ground-based computer, rather than being in the vehicle itself. The results of flight tests of the model at high angles of attack are discussed
Single-Carrier Modulation versus OFDM for Millimeter-Wave Wireless MIMO
This paper presents results on the achievable spectral efficiency and on the
energy efficiency for a wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) link
operating at millimeter wave frequencies (mmWave) in a typical 5G scenario. Two
different single-carrier modem schemes are considered, i.e., a traditional
modulation scheme with linear equalization at the receiver, and a
single-carrier modulation with cyclic prefix, frequency-domain equalization and
FFT-based processing at the receiver; these two schemes are compared with a
conventional MIMO-OFDM transceiver structure. Our analysis jointly takes into
account the peculiar characteristics of MIMO channels at mmWave frequencies,
the use of hybrid (analog-digital) pre-coding and post-coding beamformers, the
finite cardinality of the modulation structure, and the non-linear behavior of
the transmitter power amplifiers. Our results show that the best performance is
achieved by single-carrier modulation with time-domain equalization, which
exhibits the smallest loss due to the non-linear distortion, and whose
performance can be further improved by using advanced equalization schemes.
Results also confirm that performance gets severely degraded when the link
length exceeds 90-100 meters and the transmit power falls below 0 dBW.Comment: accepted for publication on IEEE Transactions on Communication

The oscillation-based test structure is a vectorless output test strategy easily extendable to built-in self-test. The proposed methodology converts filter under test into a quadrature oscillator using very simple techniques and measures the output frequency. The oscillation frequency may be considered as a digital signal and it can be evaluated using digital circuitry therefore the test time is very small. These characteristics imply that the proposed method is very suitable for catastrophic and parametric faults testing and also effective in detecting single and multiple faults. The validity of the proposed method has been verified using comparison between faulty and fault-free simulation results of two integrator loop and Tow-Thomas filters. Simulation results in 0.25 mum CMOS technology show that the proposed oscillation-based test strategy for OTA-C filters has 87% fault coverage and with a minimum number of extra components, requires a negligible area overhead

Spectral Efficiency of MIMO Millimeter-Wave Links with Single-Carrier Modulation for 5G Networks
Future wireless networks will extensively rely upon bandwidths centered on
carrier frequencies larger than 10GHz. Indeed, recent research has shown that,
despite the large path-loss, millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies can be
successfully exploited to transmit very large data-rates over short distances
to slowly moving users. Due to hardware complexity and cost constraints,
single-carrier modulation schemes, as opposed to the popular multi-carrier
schemes, are being considered for use at mmWave frequencies. This paper
presents preliminary studies on the achievable spectral efficiency on a
wireless MIMO link operating at mmWave in a typical 5G scenario. Two different
single-carrier modem schemes are considered, i.e. a traditional modulation
scheme with linear equalization at the receiver, and a single-carrier
modulation with cyclic prefix, frequency-domain equalization and FFT-based
processing at the receiver. Our results show that the former achieves a larger
spectral efficiency than the latter. Results also confirm that the spectral
efficiency increases with the dimension of the antenna array, as well as that
performance gets severely degraded when the link length exceeds 100 meters and
the transmit power falls below 0dBW. Nonetheless, mmWave appear to be very
suited for providing very large data-rates over short distances.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Proc. 20th International ITG

Model-Based Calibration of Filter Imperfections in the Random Demodulator for Compressive Sensing
The random demodulator is a recent compressive sensing architecture providing
efficient sub-Nyquist sampling of sparse band-limited signals. The compressive
sensing paradigm requires an accurate model of the analog front-end to enable
correct signal reconstruction in the digital domain. In practice, hardware
devices such as filters deviate from their desired design behavior due to
component variations. Existing reconstruction algorithms are sensitive to such
deviations, which fall into the more general category of measurement matrix
perturbations. This paper proposes a model-based technique that aims to
calibrate filter model mismatches to facilitate improved signal reconstruction
quality. The mismatch is considered to be an additive error in the discretized
impulse response. We identify the error by sampling a known calibrating signal,
enabling least-squares estimation of the impulse response error. The error
estimate and the known system model are used to calibrate the measurement
matrix. Numerical analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of the calibration
method even for highly deviating low-pass filter responses. The proposed method
performance is also compared to a state of the art method based on discrete
Fourier transform trigonometric interpolation.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Signal
