Proof Generation from Delta-Decisions
We show how to generate and validate logical proofs of unsatisfiability from
delta-complete decision procedures that rely on error-prone numerical
algorithms. Solving this problem is important for ensuring correctness of the
decision procedures. At the same time, it is a new approach for automated
theorem proving over real numbers. We design a first-order calculus, and
transform the computational steps of constraint solving into logic proofs,
which are then validated using proof-checking algorithms. As an application, we
demonstrate how proofs generated from our solver can establish many nonlinear
lemmas in the the formal proof of the Kepler Conjecture.Comment: Appeared in SYNASC'1
Modular Acquisition and Stimulation System for Timestamp-Driven Neuroscience Experiments
Dedicated systems are fundamental for neuroscience experimental protocols
that require timing determinism and synchronous stimuli generation. We
developed a data acquisition and stimuli generator system for neuroscience
research, optimized for recording timestamps from up to 6 spiking neurons and
entirely specified in a high-level Hardware Description Language (HDL). Despite
the logic complexity penalty of synthesizing from such a language, it was
possible to implement our design in a low-cost small reconfigurable device.
Under a modular framework, we explored two different memory arbitration schemes
for our system, evaluating both their logic element usage and resilience to
input activity bursts. One of them was designed with a decoupled and latency
insensitive approach, allowing for easier code reuse, while the other adopted a
centralized scheme, constructed specifically for our application. The usage of
a high-level HDL allowed straightforward and stepwise code modifications to
transform one architecture into the other. The achieved modularity is very
useful for rapidly prototyping novel electronic instrumentation systems

Modeling and Analyzing Adaptive User-Centric Systems in Real-Time Maude
Pervasive user-centric applications are systems which are meant to sense the
presence, mood, and intentions of users in order to optimize user comfort and
performance. Building such applications requires not only state-of-the art
techniques from artificial intelligence but also sound software engineering
methods for facilitating modular design, runtime adaptation and verification of
critical system requirements.
In this paper we focus on high-level design and analysis, and use the
algebraic rewriting language Real-Time Maude for specifying applications in a
real-time setting. We propose a generic component-based approach for modeling
pervasive user-centric systems and we show how to analyze and prove crucial
properties of the system architecture through model checking and simulation.
For proving time-dependent properties we use Metric Temporal Logic (MTL) and
present analysis algorithms for model checking two subclasses of MTL formulas:
time-bounded response and time-bounded safety MTL formulas. The underlying idea
is to extend the Real-Time Maude model with suitable clocks, to transform the
MTL formulas into LTL formulas over the extended specification, and then to use
the LTL model checker of Maude. It is shown that these analyses are sound and
complete for maximal time sampling. The approach is illustrated by a simple
adaptive advertising scenario in which an adaptive advertisement display can

Sensible Atoms: A Techno-aesthetic Approach to Representation
International audienceThis essay argues that nano-images would be best understood with an aesthetical approach rather than with an epistemological critique. For this aim, I propose a 'techno-aesthetical' approach: an enquiry into the way instruments and machines transform the logic of the sensible itself and not just the way by which it represents something else. Unlike critical epistemology, which remains self-evidently grounded on a representationalist philoso-phy, the approach developed here presents the advantage of providing a clear-cut distinction between image-as-representation and other modes of existence of images, such as the one of 'imaginaction' that I draw from a comparison between far-field and near-field microscopies. Once this regime of imaginaction is distinguished from representation, I focus on nano-technological percepts and argue that they follow a transmodal logic. I then draw the implic-ations of this enquiry in terms of a new sensible condition that changes the way we think of non-living objects. Finally, I conclude that if techno-aesthetics dares to posit and articulate sensibility beyond the privileged sphere of subject/object relationships, it simultaneously engages us to consider the political character of our responsibilities towards the design of nano-engineered sensorial spaces
Formalization of Transform Methods using HOL Light
Transform methods, like Laplace and Fourier, are frequently used for
analyzing the dynamical behaviour of engineering and physical systems, based on
their transfer function, and frequency response or the solutions of their
corresponding differential equations. In this paper, we present an ongoing
project, which focuses on the higher-order logic formalization of transform
methods using HOL Light theorem prover. In particular, we present the
motivation of the formalization, which is followed by the related work. Next,
we present the task completed so far while highlighting some of the challenges
faced during the formalization. Finally, we present a roadmap to achieve our

Embedding Logic and Non-volatile Devices in CMOS Digital Circuits for Improving Energy Efficiency
abstract: Static CMOS logic has remained the dominant design style of digital systems for
more than four decades due to its robustness and near zero standby current. Static
CMOS logic circuits consist of a network of combinational logic cells and clocked sequential
elements, such as latches and flip-flops that are used for sequencing computations
over time. The majority of the digital design techniques to reduce power, area, and
leakage over the past four decades have focused almost entirely on optimizing the
combinational logic. This work explores alternate architectures for the flip-flops for
improving the overall circuit performance, power and area. It consists of three main
sections.
First, is the design of a multi-input configurable flip-flop structure with embedded
logic. A conventional D-type flip-flop may be viewed as realizing an identity function,
in which the output is simply the value of the input sampled at the clock edge. In
contrast, the proposed multi-input flip-flop, named PNAND, can be configured to
realize one of a family of Boolean functions called threshold functions. In essence,
the PNAND is a circuit implementation of the well-known binary perceptron. Unlike
other reconfigurable circuits, a PNAND can be configured by simply changing the
assignment of signals to its inputs. Using a standard cell library of such gates, a technology
mapping algorithm can be applied to transform a given netlist into one with
an optimal mixture of conventional logic gates and threshold gates. This approach
was used to fabricate a 32-bit Wallace Tree multiplier and a 32-bit booth multiplier
in 65nm LP technology. Simulation and chip measurements show more than 30%
improvement in dynamic power and more than 20% reduction in core area.
The functional yield of the PNAND reduces with geometry and voltage scaling.
The second part of this research investigates the use of two mechanisms to improve
the robustness of the PNAND circuit architecture. One is the use of forward and reverse body biases to change the device threshold and the other is the use of RRAM
devices for low voltage operation.
The third part of this research focused on the design of flip-flops with non-volatile
storage. Spin-transfer torque magnetic tunnel junctions (STT-MTJ) are integrated
with both conventional D-flipflop and the PNAND circuits to implement non-volatile
logic (NVL). These non-volatile storage enhanced flip-flops are able to save the state of
system locally when a power interruption occurs. However, manufacturing variations
in the STT-MTJs and in the CMOS transistors significantly reduce the yield, leading
to an overly pessimistic design and consequently, higher energy consumption. A
detailed analysis of the design trade-offs in the driver circuitry for performing backup
and restore, and a novel method to design the energy optimal driver for a given yield is
presented. Efficient designs of two nonvolatile flip-flop (NVFF) circuits are presented,
in which the backup time is determined on a per-chip basis, resulting in minimizing
the energy wastage and satisfying the yield constraint. To achieve a yield of 98%,
the conventional approach would have to expend nearly 5X more energy than the
minimum required, whereas the proposed tunable approach expends only 26% more
energy than the minimum. A non-volatile threshold gate architecture NV-TLFF are
designed with the same backup and restore circuitry in 65nm technology. The embedded
logic in NV-TLFF compensates performance overhead of NVL. This leads to the
possibility of zero-overhead non-volatile datapath circuits. An 8-bit multiply-and-
accumulate (MAC) unit is designed to demonstrate the performance benefits of the
proposed architecture. Based on the results of HSPICE simulations, the MAC circuit
with the proposed NV-TLFF cells is shown to consume at least 20% less power and
area as compared to the circuit designed with conventional DFFs, without sacrificing

Verification of Imperative Programs by Constraint Logic Program Transformation
We present a method for verifying partial correctness properties of
imperative programs that manipulate integers and arrays by using techniques
based on the transformation of constraint logic programs (CLP). We use CLP as a
metalanguage for representing imperative programs, their executions, and their
properties. First, we encode the correctness of an imperative program, say
prog, as the negation of a predicate 'incorrect' defined by a CLP program T. By
construction, 'incorrect' holds in the least model of T if and only if the
execution of prog from an initial configuration eventually halts in an error
configuration. Then, we apply to program T a sequence of transformations that
preserve its least model semantics. These transformations are based on
well-known transformation rules, such as unfolding and folding, guided by
suitable transformation strategies, such as specialization and generalization.
The objective of the transformations is to derive a new CLP program TransfT
where the predicate 'incorrect' is defined either by (i) the fact 'incorrect.'
(and in this case prog is not correct), or by (ii) the empty set of clauses
(and in this case prog is correct). In the case where we derive a CLP program
such that neither (i) nor (ii) holds, we iterate the transformation. Since the
problem is undecidable, this process may not terminate. We show through
examples that our method can be applied in a rather systematic way, and is
amenable to automation by transferring to the field of program verification

Formal Analysis of Linear Control Systems using Theorem Proving
Control systems are an integral part of almost every engineering and physical
system and thus their accurate analysis is of utmost importance. Traditionally,
control systems are analyzed using paper-and-pencil proof and computer
simulation methods, however, both of these methods cannot provide accurate
analysis due to their inherent limitations. Model checking has been widely used
to analyze control systems but the continuous nature of their environment and
physical components cannot be truly captured by a state-transition system in
this technique. To overcome these limitations, we propose to use
higher-order-logic theorem proving for analyzing linear control systems based
on a formalized theory of the Laplace transform method. For this purpose, we
have formalized the foundations of linear control system analysis in
higher-order logic so that a linear control system can be readily modeled and
analyzed. The paper presents a new formalization of the Laplace transform and
the formal verification of its properties that are frequently used in the
transfer function based analysis to judge the frequency response, gain margin
and phase margin, and stability of a linear control system. We also formalize
the active realizations of various controllers, like
Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID), Proportional-Integral (PI),
Proportional-Derivative (PD), and various active and passive compensators, like
lead, lag and lag-lead. For illustration, we present a formal analysis of an
