    Shape Retrieval Methods for Architectural 3D Models

    This thesis introduces new methods for content-based retrieval of architecture-related 3D models. We thereby consider two different overall types of architectural 3D models. The first type consists of context objects that are used for detailed design and decoration of 3D building model drafts. This includes e.g. furnishing for interior design or barriers and fences for forming the exterior environment. The second type consists of actual building models. To enable efficient content-based retrieval for both model types that is tailored to the user requirements of the architectural domain, type-specific algorithms must be developed. On the one hand, context objects like furnishing that provide similar functions (e.g. seating furniture) often share a similar shape. Nevertheless they might be considered to belong to different object classes from an architectural point of view (e.g. armchair, elbow chair, swivel chair). The differentiation is due to small geometric details and is sometimes only obvious to an expert from the domain. Building models on the other hand are often distinguished according to the underlying floor- and room plans. Topological floor plan properties for example serve as a starting point for telling apart residential and commercial buildings. The first contribution of this thesis is a new meta descriptor for 3D retrieval that combines different types of local shape descriptors using a supervised learning approach. The approach enables the differentiation of object classes according to small geometric details and at the same time integrates expert knowledge from the field of architecture. We evaluate our approach using a database containing arbitrary 3D models as well as on one that only consists of models from the architectural domain. We then further extend our approach by adding a sophisticated shape descriptor localization strategy. Additionally, we exploit knowledge about the spatial relationship of object components to further enhance the retrieval performance. In the second part of the thesis we introduce attributed room connectivity graphs (RCGs) as a means to characterize a 3D building model according to the structure of its underlying floor plans. We first describe how RCGs are inferred from a given building model and discuss how substructures of this graph can be queried efficiently. We then introduce a new descriptor denoted as Bag-of-Attributed-Subgraphs that transforms attributed graphs into a vector-based representation using subgraph embeddings. We finally evaluate the retrieval performance of this new method on a database consisting of building models with different floor plan types. All methods presented in this thesis are aimed at an as automated as possible workflow for indexing and retrieval such that only minimum human interaction is required. Accordingly, only polygon soups are required as inputs which do not need to be manually repaired or structured. Human effort is only needed for offline groundtruth generation to enable supervised learning and for providing information about the orientation of building models and the unit of measurement used for modeling

    Deploying a Quantum Annealing Processor to Detect Tree Cover in Aerial Imagery of California

    Quantum annealing is an experimental and potentially breakthrough computational technology for handling hard optimization problems, including problems of computer vision. We present a case study in training a production-scale classifier of tree cover in remote sensing imagery, using early-generation quantum annealing hardware built by D-wave Systems, Inc. Beginning within a known boosting framework, we train decision stumps on texture features and vegetation indices extracted from four-band, one-meter-resolution aerial imagery from the state of California. We then impose a regulated quadratic training objective to select an optimal voting subset from among these stumps. The votes of the subset define the classifier. For optimization, the logical variables in the objective function map to quantum bits in the hardware device, while quadratic couplings encode as the strength of physical interactions between the quantum bits. Hardware design limits the number of couplings between these basic physical entities to five or six. To account for this limitation in mapping large problems to the hardware architecture, we propose a truncation and rescaling of the training objective through a trainable metaparameter. The boosting process on our basic 108- and 508-variable problems, thus constituted, returns classifiers that incorporate a diverse range of color- and texture-based metrics and discriminate tree cover with accuracies as high as 92% in validation and 90% on a test scene encompassing the open space preserves and dense suburban build of Mill Valley, CA

    CMS level-1 trigger muon momentum assignment with machine learning

    With the advent of the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC), the instantaneous luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will increase up to 7,5 10^34 cm^-2s^-1. Therefore, new algorithmic techniques for data acquisition and processing will be necessary, in preparation for a high pile-up environment that would eventually make the current electronics and trigger devices obsolete. Nowadays, Machine Learning techniques represent a promising alternative to this problem, as they make possible the selection of multiple information - collected by the detector - and build from them different models, able to predict with a certain efficiency fundamental physical quantities, including the transverse momentum pT. The analysis presented in this Master Thesis consists in the production of such models - with data obtained through Monte Carlo simulations - capable of predicting the transverse momentum of muons crossing the Barrel region of the CMS muon chambers, and compare the results with the pT assigned by the current CMS Level 1 Barrel Muon Track Finder (BMTF) trigger system

    Local, Semi-Local and Global Models for Texture, Object and Scene Recognition

    This dissertation addresses the problems of recognizing textures, objects, and scenes in photographs. We present approaches to these recognition tasks that combine salient local image features with spatial relations and effective discriminative learning techniques. First, we introduce a bag of features image model for recognizing textured surfaces under a wide range of transformations, including viewpoint changes and non-rigid deformations. We present results of a large-scale comparative evaluation indicating that bags of features can be effective not only for texture, but also for object categization, even in the presence of substantial clutter and intra-class variation. We also show how to augment the purely local image representation with statistical co-occurrence relations between pairs of nearby features, and develop a learning and classification framework for the task of classifying individual features in a multi-texture image. Next, we present a more structured alternative to bags of features for object recognition, namely, an image representation based on semi-local parts, or groups of features characterized by stable appearance and geometric layout. Semi-local parts are automatically learned from small sets of unsegmented, cluttered images. Finally, we present a global method for recognizing scene categories that works by partitioning the image into increasingly fine sub-regions and computing histograms of local features found inside each sub-region. The resulting spatial pyramid representation demonstrates significantly improved performance on challenging scene categorization tasks

    A Survey on Reservoir Computing and its Interdisciplinary Applications Beyond Traditional Machine Learning

    Reservoir computing (RC), first applied to temporal signal processing, is a recurrent neural network in which neurons are randomly connected. Once initialized, the connection strengths remain unchanged. Such a simple structure turns RC into a non-linear dynamical system that maps low-dimensional inputs into a high-dimensional space. The model's rich dynamics, linear separability, and memory capacity then enable a simple linear readout to generate adequate responses for various applications. RC spans areas far beyond machine learning, since it has been shown that the complex dynamics can be realized in various physical hardware implementations and biological devices. This yields greater flexibility and shorter computation time. Moreover, the neuronal responses triggered by the model's dynamics shed light on understanding brain mechanisms that also exploit similar dynamical processes. While the literature on RC is vast and fragmented, here we conduct a unified review of RC's recent developments from machine learning to physics, biology, and neuroscience. We first review the early RC models, and then survey the state-of-the-art models and their applications. We further introduce studies on modeling the brain's mechanisms by RC. Finally, we offer new perspectives on RC development, including reservoir design, coding frameworks unification, physical RC implementations, and interaction between RC, cognitive neuroscience and evolution.Comment: 51 pages, 19 figures, IEEE Acces
